Windrush - Arrivals
Passengers on the Windrush were told thay they were headed for the 'mother country' and that they were all welcome. What did they experience after their arrival in Britain? Seven Windrush passengers tell their stories. Page 1 of 7 1. Arthur Curling 2. Clinton Edwards 3. John Richards 4. Lucile Harris ... Print entire article Arthur Curling As a matter of fact I had a reasonably good job in Jamaica and things were looking up. It just a matter of the Island is too small. You don't realise how small until after you've travelled. One doesn't feel that you know everything, what happens, what you feel is a sense of freedom. I went to Bermuda, met a lot of Bermudans, I was in a crowd of people again, many were ex-service men you were able to do things. I had a relation on the ship who was going to see his brother, who was studying at the time. It's difficult for me to go back, because I've never looked back, I always try to look forward in life. I wouldn't say England been good to me, but I say it made a change in my life at the time. England was the easiest country to get into and the hardest country to get out of, for the mere fact is if you working, you never earn enough money for your fare, but at the same time you always say you always have another 10 year, 15-20 years. You get yourself involved and things. I have spent most of my life in England, I have travelled quite a lot on the continent of Africa, and I went to Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and North America. But England has something that you want to get back to; you can't put your finger on it.

Potomac Curling Club History The Potomac Curling Club was founded in 1961 by six Canadians, stationed in Washington DC; Bill Onysko, Al Foster, Paul Magunssen, Jack Rozee, Ben Southern, and Alice Preen. The Club first curled on rented skating ice in College Park, MD, using stones borrowed from the American Curling Foundation. After a year, we moved to another skating rink in Silver Spring, MD housed in a former Safeway store. We had three sheets of ice, all less than standard length, and no two the same length, due to the shape of the building. All of this made draw weight a tricky thing to come by. In spite of poor ice an limited curling time (one night a week), we were able to maintain an adequate and enthusiastic membership, indeed, sufficient to require a staged draw, such that each team curled only two nights out of three.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HAIRSTYLES
For each era, we have provided a brief history of the key elements in hairstyles. Try our simple suggestions on how to recreate a period 'do for your next formal event! ANCIENT From the beginning of time, women have cared for their hair. The famous Ice Age statuettes known as the Venus of Willendorf and of Brassempouy show clear evidence of stylised hair. Perhaps 30,000 years old, these statuettes reveal that at least some women in the society took care about how their hair looked and had a concept of beauty and attractiveness. Considerable labor was required to have created the hairstyles of these statuettes. There are also small clay figurines from Butmir in Bosnia illustrating short, neatly combed hair, which are up to 7,000 years old. In Israel and other parts of the Middle East, women often kept their hair covered by fabric draped about the face like a hood. Hairstyles in the Middle East and elsewhere, in fact held deeper significance. Some cultures considered women's long hair to be provocative that it had to be covered up or controlled in tight braids, rolls or curls. The prophet Samson's power was recorded in Scripture as being innately connected to his long, thick hair. Among the Temne of Africa, it took hours or days to fashion a hairstyle. The fine rows of the hairstyle were a symbolic representation of the cultivation of the land and thus indicated civilization. These hairstyles are termed 'cornrows.' Among the Polynesians of the Pacific, the first time a boy's hair was cut marked his coming of age. It was also a way in which he was now differentiated from women. Hair was thought to contain the

Curling began in Vancouver in 1910 when Lester and Frank Patrick built the Denman Arena. This facility was affectionately known as "the Pile", bringing hockey to Vancouver as well as curling. The Vancouver Curling Club occupied the basement of the Denman Arena. Curling stopped during the First World War and did not recommence until 1931 at the newly built Forum on the current PNE grounds with 10 sheets of curling ice. In 1936, BC participated in the Brier for the first time ever, and a Vancouver team represented the province after winning in Nelson. That same year, the Denman Arena burned down...and hockey took over the Forum, forcing curling to only one sheet of ice at the end of the Forum...and it was 12 feet short of regulation length. The Lyall Dagg team won the MacDonald Brier and World Championship in 1964...and since then, the club has been home to 24 provincial Men's champions, 4 Women's champions, 4 Mixed champions, 5 Senior Men's champions, 1 Junior Men's and 1 Junior Women's champion. HISTORY Curling has enjoyed a long and vibrant history in Arnprior. The game was first played on the Madawaska River about 1865, and later on open rinks on a bay in the river. The first covered rink with a low ceiling was built on Victoria Street in 1868. At the same time, the open-air rink on the Madawaska River had a large patronage. The pioneer rink was demolished in 1871 and a rink of regulation size was built on the same site. In 1876 a new rink was built on Harriet Street and in 1886 the club was incorporated. The Harriet Street building was demolished in 1899 when a two sheet-curling rink was erected on Elgin Street. A three-sheet rink with fine clubrooms, kitchen and large ballroom replaced this facility in 1935. The present four sheet building on Galvin Street was built in 1969 and opened on February 14, 1970

Most forms of recreation were shared by and involved the majority of villagers, but curling was probably the most popular game. The men flung the stones and the women, at the cry of "soop her up!", armed with besoms (brushes) swept the ice in front of the gliding stones. The Curlers Word encouraged players thus: if you be a curler keen, stand right, look ev'n sole well, shoot straight and sweep clean' It is not known when ' Scotland's ain game ' was first played in Wanlockhead but it was popular even before the formation of the Curling Society in 1777. The minutes show that there were 123 members at the first meeting on the 26th December 1777. The Miners' Library has the complete minutes of the Curling Society as well as many of the medals and trophies won by its members.
The Silver Band The Curling Society's minutes tell us that as early as 1777 Wanlockhead had a Village Band referring to their playing at the Curling Society's ' bon spiels '. Its music was a necessary accompaniment at Village weddings, fetes, shows and sports days throughout Dumfriesshire, Lanarkshire and the Stewartry.

The history of Curls...
"What did you do to their ears? Are their ears always like that? Did you use a curling iron?" Yes, their ears ARE always like that and no, a curling iron was NOT used to achieve those extraordinary ears! The curled ear is a natural genetic mutation and first time admirers are always surprised by the American Curl's unique ears and impressed by their overall striking beauty. Curls quickly become a favorite of all who come to know them. The American Curl's ears, which are firm to the touch and curl back in a graceful arc away from their face toward the center back of their head, are a genetic mutation given to us by none other than Mother Nature. Discovered in California as a stray cat in 1981, the American Curl is now recognized as one of the United States' native American cat breeds.
History
On a sunny day in June 1981 in Lakewood, California, a longhair silky black female kitten with unusual ears wandered up to the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga. Joe scrutinized the situation and determined that the most effective solution to this stray kitten problem was to ask Grace not to feed the kitten. Grace, not abiding by her husband's wishes but listening to her heart instead, left a bowl of food on the porch. The affectionate black kitten quickly worked her way into the Ruga's hearts (especially Joe's) and they named her Shulamith, which means "black but comely". Such are the beginnings of the American Curl as it is known today. True American Curls must trace their pedigree back to Shulamith, the foundation female.

Club History The Unionville Curling Club is privately owned by its members and operated by an elected Board of Directors. It represents a group of individuals dedicated to the Sport of Curling. The Unionville Curling Club was founded in 1919. From its humble beginnings in a small converted barn to its present location, the club has grown to become one of Ontario's most respected curling clubs. Situated in the heart of the village of Unionville, it serves curlers from the surrounding area as well as Metro Toronto. The Unionville Curling Club is an active member of the Ontario Curling Association, the Southern Ontario Ladies Curling Association and the Toronto Curling Association. Men's Section The Men's Section accommodates the Novice and the competitive curler by offering schedules for both "Draw" and "Competitive" Curling. Draw Schedule curling allows men the opportunity to play in an easy, relaxed atmosphere on randomly selected teams. Three schedules per season give each member an opportunity to meet and curl with other members of the club. If your competitive fires still burn then the Team Entry Curling affords members the opportunity to put together your own team to compete against in-club teams. All teams play a ladder system based on total points earned.

The Ottawa Curling Club Through the Years
Curling begins on the Rideau Canal. The Bytown Curling Club is formed with 14 members and Colonel Allan Gilmour as founder and president. The first curling club in Ottawa (by 37 years) and 19th-oldest club in Canada begins over a century of play with "irons."
The Canadian Branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club is established, and the Bytown Curling Club is the first club to be admitted.
Bytown changes its name to Ottawa on January 1. The Bytown Curling Club becomes the Ottawa Curling Club.
A shed on Lisgar Street by the canal provides a single sheet of ice, with water hauled from the canal.
Colonel Gilmour provides a lumber shed with one sheet at the corner of Kent and Vittoria on the cliffs overlooking the Ottawa River, near the present site of the Supreme Court of Canada.
The Club builds a frame rink of its own on Albert Street between Metcalfe and O'Connor, providing two sheets in the year of Confederation.

CURLING IN SWEDEN SINCE 1846
The SWEDISH CURLING ASSOCIATION was founded the 10th of December 1916. Swedish curling, however, is much older. As early as 1846 a Scotsman named William Andrew MacFie moved over to Sweden and settled down in Uddevalla at the Swedish west coast, about 85 kilometres north of Gothenburg. He brought equipment for curling and in 1852 he founded the very first European curling club outside U.K, called "Bohuslänska Curlingklubben". That club still exists and is very active with a very good junior programme. The curlers in Uddevalla tried to introduce curling to the p eople of Gothenburgh during the 1870-ties but without any success. Instead the Swedish capital Stockholm became the new market for Swedish curling. In the end of 1900 two gentlemen with roots in Bavaria started some form of curling with wooden "curling-stones". They founded the first club in Stockholm, "Amatörföreningens Curlingklubb".
