Wheelchair curling is one of the few sports where women can physically compete with men. I hope we see more female curlers across the province. .
http://www.bcwheelchairsports.com/bcwcsp/sports/curling.htm
The latest news...
BC wheelchair curlers can now challenge previously selected-by-default Ontario athletes for the right to represent Canada at National and World Championships, as well as at the inaugural Paralympics curling in Torino in 2006.
More than 20 athletes from Prince George, the lower mainland and the Okanagan began this season's challenge by attending CurlBC's Vernon selection camp last October. Two mixed region teams then flew to Toronto looking to become Team Canada.
In a round robin tie-breaker to decide a place in the final, Kelowna's Gerry Austgarden (skip),Whitney Warren and Frank LaBounty (Prince George) and Sonja Gaudet (Vernon) edged Vancouver's Jim Shannon (skip), Gary Cormack, Darryl Neighbour and Enderby's Joan Reid. In the final Ontario's Daw avenged his only round robin defeat by blanking Austgarden to retain his Canadian crown, subsequently going on to win bronze in a 13 team field at the World Championship in Switzerland in January.
The three communities currently sponsoring active curling programs, Vancouver, Prince George and the Okanagan, will vie for the honor of hosting next season's 2004 National Championship. Darryl Neighbour is one of many athletes hoping to win on home ice and turn that win into a podium finish at the World Championships in Scotland in 2005.
Though this year's teams were selected from across communities, it has not been decided whether future teams will be selected on a "best athletes available" basis or the "best team" approach used in all other areas of curling. Silver medalist Gerry Austgarden says that while there are arguments to be made on each side, the victorious Daw team had played together for a considerable time, and that familiarity gave them a decided competitive advantage.

Granite Curling Club of West Ottawa In order to appreciate why we are known as the Granite Curling Club of West Ottawa, we should be aware of the fact that when curling came to Canada in the early 1800's, the game was played on the many frozen rivers and ponds, and the rocks were not always made of stone. For reasons of economy, transportation, or other factors, curling stones were not readily available throughout the country. RCN Navy Curling Club Welcome to the RCN (Navy) Curling Club. Here we have a little bit of everything for everyone interested in the game of curling and in particular interested in our home at the Navy. Rideau Curling Club The RCC was formed in November 1888; Governor General Lord Stanley was Patron and Sir Sandford Fleming President. The 120 male members (no ladies until 1903) rented a Quonset type building from the Rideau Skating and Curling Co. on Waller St. which provided three sheets of natural ice and sparse facilities. Gold on Ice: The Story of the Sandra Schmirler Curling Team

Although everyone has heard the story a thousand times, never before has it been presented with such detail. It's an uplifiting tale of the tortoise beating the hare, David conquering Goliath, success in the face of adversity. You'll be mesmerized as the tales of ice being furiously swept and wood gliding across it are told with a never-before-achieved drama. The title is no lie, the Sandra Schmirler Curling Team is truly "Gold on Ice."

Background ... Where
Background of the Sport
Curling is the second most popular winter sport in Canada, and is most widespread in the prairies. Curling is played on a sheet of pebbled ice, unlike the smooth ice of a skating or hockey rink, with target circles (the "house") at each end resembling shuffleboard. A curling team is called a "rink" and consists of four people led by the "skip." The object of this sport is to get the most curling "rocks" nearest the center of the rings at the opposite side of the rink. The sport of curling involves balance, strength, accuracy, and strategy.

92. Opinion: Curling?
I hope in the next Olympics, the Olympic Committee will say no to primetime curling being televised and yes to sports like hockey.
http://www.teenink.com/Past/2002/May/Opinion/Curling.html
C urling is a very unusual sport that somehow ended up in the Olympics. This weird sport was invented in ancient Scotland and is played with a 42-pound stone, a captain and two sweepers. Why were all the curling games in the Olympics shown on cable TV at prime time when no one cares about it? Why is curling even in the Olympics?
Curling is a sport, but it is not exciting. It is actually more of a joke than a sport. When I watched, all I could see were old men and women (who are not fit) sweeping the front of the ice so the stone could get in the middle of a circle. This sport does not require fit bodies, a lot of skill, or much equipment.
Curling is more of a game with no real action. It is really funny hearing people get all excited, but it just shouldn't be an Olympic event. Curling should be taken out of the Olympics, or at least it should not be televised.
Shouldn't an Olympic event demonstrate your country's teamwork and hard work? Curling shows only small amounts of each. As an Olympic viewer it is frustrating that I couldn't watch all the hockey games, but curling was prime time. I hope in the next Olympics, the Olympic Committee will say no to prime-time curling being televised and yes to sports like hockey.

The curling rink is a patch of ice, 138 by 14 feet, with identical targets marked by concentric circles at each end. (It should be noted that the word "rink" means both the playing area and a curling team.) At the center of the target, which is called the "house," is a "tee," which is simply an aiming point, a small circle of arbitrary size. Around the tee are circles with diameters of 4, 8, and 12 feet. The tees are 38 yards apart. At each end is a "hack," a foothold projecting from the ice, which keeps the player from sliding down the rink behind the stone after its release by the player. The ice is pebbled, rather than smooth. Pebbling is accomplished by sprinkling warm water on the prepared ice surface. The purpose is to give the stones something to grip so that their spin will make them curve; if the ice were perfectly smooth, it would be impossible to curl the stone. The stone has maximum measurements of 36 inches in circumference, and 4 1/2 inches in height. In Canada and the United States the weight has been standardized at 44 pounds. The stone has two soles, or sliding surfaces, one of which is rough, for very fast ice, and the other smooth, for slow ice. The gooseneck handle is detachable so that a player can use whichever sole is best for the ice conditions that prevail.

World Curling Championships It is recorded that international curling events were staged in the 19th century in Europe and North America, but it was not until the first Winter Olympic Games at Chamonix in 1924 that any form of competition was identified. Great Britain defeated Sweden and France in a three-country demonstration of the sport. In 1932 at Lake Placid, curling again was listed as a demonstration sport at the Winter Olympics, and Canada was a winner over the United States in a two-country competition in which each country entered four teams.
