CULTS The Article Entitled “Cults and Iranians” is attached at the end http://ghandchi.com/37-Cults.htm The wording cult has been used and misused to refer to different groupings, some actually being a religious or political cult, such as the Hari Krishna, and some actually not being a religious or political cult. I believe it is important to understand what a cult is and how it can be recognized, and how anyone, who is entangled in it, can get out of it. For example, how can one answer the question regarding MKO and whether it is a cult? Lot of times, some groupings that have originally been a cult have become a religion or an open political organization later, and it is no longer proper to call them a cult. Many of the existing political parties and religions have originally been cults. FIRST CHARACTERISTIC OF A CULT: The FIRST distinction between a religious cult and an open religion is that the belief system of a cult is not openly announced honestly and is not easily accessible to public for public scrutiny. Many times they even tell their members that only believers can see the light. Nonetheless, the most common mistake in thinking of a group as a

What is a cult?
Webster's defines a cult as "a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also a minority religious group holding beliefs regarded as unorthodox or spurious." http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/cultsect/mdtaskforce/eby_testimony.htm This definition is entirely subjective: it means that if you think a religion is unorthodox, then you will call it a cult.
Church of Scientology
The Church of Scientology Scientology is a system of beliefs and teachings, originally established as a secular philosophy in 1952 by author L. Ron Hubbard, and subsequently reoriented from 1953 as an "applied religious philosophy". Scientology is recognized as a constitutionally protected religion in the United States, but not in most European countries. It is most prominently represented by the Church of Scientology , which has aroused considerable controversy since it was founded in 1954.

Cults and Crazy Thinking
by John Edmiston
Cults "think differently". Its a complex issue and some tool is needed so we can quickly evaluate whether a group is a genuine religious movement or a dangerous cult group. Over the last ten years of ministry to cults I have developed some tools that help me to help others improve their judgement. Such tools have to be simple, transferable and memorisable so they can sit in the person's memory and pop up when needed - a little bit like a TSR I suppose. The above diagram is one such tool. Its meant to be memorised. Its meant to be simple. And its meant to work as an elementary tool for evaluating religious groups and their leaders. Well here goes! The first of our "three dimensions" on the diagram is the Love-Hate dimension. It could also be labeled Unconditional Love vs Paranoid Thinking. The key test is the question "How do they treat their enemies?'. A paranoid group goes from suspicion to suspicion, living in fear and employing "guilt by association" to mark people as those to beware of. A paranoid cult group is preoccupied with its fortress mentality, its thought life is disproportionately centred around warding off evil rather than pursuing good. While guarding against sin and compromise is an essential part of the Christian life being paranoid is not! Jesus was sinless - but He still loved His enemies and prayed for those who persecuted Him. e-mail Eternity Magazine and we will do our best to help.

Defending the Faith: A Beginner's Guide to Cults and New Religions by Richard Abanes Former Christian Research Institute researcher Richard Abanes has written a number of books that examine and evaluate religious belief systems. While many authors who write books quickly do so because they don't care about being accurate and/or they repackage the same message in multiple books, Abanes has proved to be careful and thoughtful. Certainly there is some overlap between the two books [this and the one that follows], and between these books and other Christian evaluations of cults and new religions. However, these two books are worth adding to any cult evangelism library because they provide unique evaluations and cover some religious movements not frequently reviewed. Defending the Faith is a good book to read cover-to-cover or chapter-by-chapter. Most books on the cults examine the cults one by one, repeating essential biblical doctrine in each chapter in response to the doctrinal teachings of the specific cult in that chapter. Abanes, however, organizes his cult evaluations within a framework of essential doctrines, in each chapter presenting an orthodox summary of a particular point of doctrine, and then contrasting that to what various cults and new religions believe on the same subject. The unique appeal of this approach is that the careful reader will learn essential Christian doctrine as the foundation for evaluating the differing claims of the cults. The focus is on truth rather than on error. As Dr. Walter Martin used to say, the best way to recognize the counterfeit is to be thoroughly familiar with the genuine.

CULTS WITHIN AUSTRALIA
Probably the most important chapter of the Joint Standing Committee's report on Freedom of Religion and Belief within Australia is Chapter 10, the one pertaining the cults. The Collins dictionary simply describes a "cult" as a specific system of worship; devotion to a person, ideal, activity; popular fashion. If this is an accurate description, then it is hard to understand why, when the word "cult" is applied to a belief system, that negative images are portrayed. The report of the Joint Standing Committee pointed out that there are differences between cults and small, but nevertheless, mainstream religions that are not well understood or that some people think are "strange". Such religions it included Ananda Marga, Hare Krishna, the Exclusive Plymouth Brethren, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints and Jehovah's Witnesses. So what makes for a "cult"? The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade noted that there is no legal definition which distinguishes between religions and cults. However, a Dr Max Wallace provide a range of material on cults, noting that they could fall into a number of categories, including religious, personal development, cosmological and healing. To Dr Wallace, the difference between a religion and a cult is that "religions are more outward looking and more public in their affairs than cults, which tend to be more inward looking, committed to their own affairs, and totally ensconced in the activities of members inside the organisations"

It lays a firm foundation for faith in 12 lessons and has been used effectively with new believers and with those who have no background in Christianity. This overview of the Bible is highly recommended and is an effective tool for sharing with international students (or any persons) who want to know more about God. Format 8-1/2x11. ENG-L142 Add to Your Faith Bill Perry An excellent Bible Study especially for an international who has just come to faith in Christ. Using the components of Christian character from 2 Peter 1:5-7, it begins a study of the New Testament epistles that helps one discover principles of spiritual growth that can then be applied in one's own cultural situation. Because of the changeability of an international student's situation, this study has been set up for use as a group study, a one-on-one situation or if need be, a self-study. FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin,The

There is a common tendency to view "cults" with a combination of mistrust and fear. Much of this hostility derives from widespread misconceptions about the nature of "cults," founded upon popular stereotypes and simple ignorance. While such misconceptions are unfortunate in the general populace, they may be dangerous when harbored by law enforcement officers charged with dealing with these groups and ensuring the safety of both "cult" members and the general public. The intent of this article is to shed light on what "cults" are and are not, to give law enforcement officers some general guidance on how to approach such movements, and to provide an illustration of how one police department successfully handled the arrival of a doomsday "cult" in its jurisdiction. [1] A Policinq Model In sociological terms, a "cult" may be defined as a movement that is foreign to the culture in which it lives. [2] Thus, Americans would define a "cult" as a group, generally with a religious foundation, whose beliefs and practices are unfamiliar to the majority of U.S. citizens. Many groups that Americans once thought of as "cults"such as the early Quakers, Seventh-Day Adventists, or Mormonshave received increased recognition and acceptance and become accredited churches. [3] Other groups, such as Zen Buddhists, which many Americans may view as "cults," represent mainstream movements in other parts of the world. Thus, defining a group as a "cult" generally has much more to do with the way society perceives the group than it does with the characteristics indigenous to the group itself.
