General Notes
- "... Rome's false religion is worse than no religion because Rome substitutes religion for truth. ... Hinduism is so parallel to Romanism [as to the common idolatry] that many Hindus can become Catholics and not need to give up Hinduism. ..." (3/1/91, Calvary Contender ). During the past fifty years, at least three important trends in the Roman Catholic Church are clearly observable. These are: (1) a greater emphasis upon the place of Mary; (2) the acceptance of the so-called Charismatic renewal within the Church with new emphasis upon the claimed "ministry of the Holy Spirit"; and (3) a major emphasis upon ecumenical activities with a view to seeking the full visible unity of all religions. Concerning the latter item, the 3/97 C.E.C. Journal had an ad from the 3/96 New Covenant (Franciscan University, Steubenville, Ohio). It read (emphasis theirs): " The Holy Father has a sweeping vision for the new millennium: a Church HEALED of division, BOUND together by love, and celebrating a Eucharistic unity ... See how

50. Why Christian Fundamentalists Are Cults
A more general look at cults. Some have difficulty identifying a cult because it is not so easy to identify one that is not even religious.
http://www.sullivan-county.com/news/fundie_cults/
Why Christian Fundamentalists are Cults
Although I wouldn't go so far as to say all religions are cults, I do believe that there are a lot more cults out there than we realize, hiding behind a facade of respectability...or at least acceptance. The fact that a movement has existed for a long time, even centuries, and is believed in by even millions of followers does not make that movement necessarily true. It wouldn't be fair to say all Christian fundamentalists are cults but where does pure blind faith and rejection of reason not cross into a cult outlook? So what makes a cult? Baptists accuse Mormons and JWs of being cults, others call the entire Christian faith a cult. It's not necessarily the strangeness of the ideas set forth; let's be honest, most religions look ludicrous to outsiders. There has to be something more than a style of dress or a bizarre doctrine at the heart of a cult. Let's look at some characteristics of cults.
  • Cults usually feature a strong leader who is admired with a fervent devotion. People will follow him... and on rare occasions, her... anywhere. I've seen that happen in Christian denominations on more than one occasion when the minister would switch churches a large section of the congregation would follow him.
  • Cults try to keep their members isolated from outside influences that might cause doubt to arise. (Home schooling for example.) I'm not going to say that every church with a "family life center" is a cult, but when you combine that with restricting social contacts to others from the same denomination or even the same congregation, regulating hair styles and dress codes and condemning morally neutral activities such as dancing, listening to "secular" music or playing certain types of games, that starts to look like mind control.

VII. APOCALYPTIC CULTS
For apocalyptic cults, especially biblically based ones, the millennium is viewed as the time that will signal a major transformation for the world. Many apocalyptic cults share the belief that the battle against Satan, as prophesied in the Book of Revelation, will begin in the years surrounding the millennium and that the federal government is an arm of Satan. Therefore, the millennium will bring about a battle between cult members - religious martyrs - and the government. While predicting violence is extremely difficult and imprecise, there are certain characteristics that make some cults more prone to violence. Law enforcement officials should be aware of the following factors:

General Essay on the Religions of Latin America
The first contingent of humans arrived in North America from Asia during the glacial age which began some 40 thousand years ago. From North America they entered Central America sometime between 13 000 BCE and 7500 BCE spreading from there to South America. Relatively little is known about the inhabitants of Latin America during this period since our knowledge about them is based solely on excavations. However, despite the early arrival of people in Central and South America it was not until 2000 BCE that the first permanent villages showing some kind of social organisation appeared, leading to the formation of high civilisations and social stratification such as the Olmecs that flourished around 1300 BCE or the Mayas that appeared in the first millenium BCE. The settlements in Latin America varied immensely from one place to another. While societies such as the Inca of the Andes and the Maya, Olmec and Aztec of Central America developed a high level of culture, others kept a rather tribal structure. Generalisation about these cultures is, therefore, problematic. In spite of these differences it is possible to identify certain common characteristics in both high civilizations and tribal societies such as animism, a cult of ancestors and continuity between religion and political power. In some societies the mediation between the supernatural and the natural was done through a hierarchically organized body of priests, in other societies a more democratic kind of shamanistic practice was stronger.

http://philtar.ucsm.ac.uk/encyclopedia/hindu/devot/geness.html
General Essay on Hindu Devotional Groups
The chart refers to devotional sects within Hinduism. Here the use of the word 'sect' is appropriate, for many of these groups have reacted against the rigidity of orthodox Hindu society and teach that devotion is of far greater significance than divisions based on birth and caste. Some even go so far as to reject the institution of caste altogether and urge that the community of devotees should transcend such divisions. Devotion to Vishnu as a monotheistic Deity is referred to for the first time in the Mahabharata, compiled probably two or three centuries before the common era, and it is apparent that devotional groups have been in existence since that period and possibly earlier. These early cults are referred to as Bhagavatas, Pancaratras and Vaikhanasas, and appear to have been strongest in South India. Today these early groups have largely been absorbed into later sects, though Vaikhanasa priests still officiate in a few of the south Indian temples. The Shri Vaishnavas are today a major sect and are particularly prominent in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. They were founded by the renowned teacher Ramanuja (1018-1137CE) who was himself initiated into the earlier cults of Southern Vaishnavism. Ramanuja taught a devotional form of Vedanta which postulated a Supreme Personal Deity who existed in his own domain and also within each being. Today the Shri Vaishnavas control many of the major Vaishnava shrines in Tamil Nadu with brahmana priests officiating over the temple worship in accordance with strict regulations. They are now divided into two sub-groups, the Vatakalai northern branch and the Tengalai southern branch. Apart from geography, principal differences between the two groups centre on the question of whether divine grace is an absolute path to salvation and on the use of the Sanskrit or Tamil languages.

General Notes on the Cults of Arkat
In RuneQuest II cults worked slightly differently than they do in the new, revitalised Glorantha that HeroWars Arkat Kortagisoul or the Old Arkat Kult Alliance and are rarer than the more proliferate sects of Arkatism. So, to ensure that each sect is individualised, you should not only realize that my descriptions are merely templates, and not cast-in-iron cult write ups, and you should also consider such things as the sects attitude towards chaos, illumination, esoteric Arkatism etc..., which will vary from sect to sect. To deomonstrate what I mean about merging cult write ups, here are an example sect of Arkati from my own campaign, the Blackmorian Monks.
The Blackmorian Monks
On the northern tip of the Poldark Forest in Otkorion, about ten key miles out of the forest, is a monastery. It is made of stone, carved in the early portions of the Third Age. Two basalt pillars are either side of the entrance, carved with Arkati litany. This is the home of the Blackmorian Monks. The sect are all fanatics and spend their time in ritual preparations for going to fight chaos. Then they go forth, they do so in small groups of crack warriors, with other monks maintaining sorcery spells cast upon them to increase their ability. Generally the monks have little to do with the outside world and purchase small amounts of food and raw metals with the plunder they gain from killing chaos and other followers of the Deceiver (read: other Arkati).
