Danny Glover, Harry Belafonte and other like-minded celebrities can cozy up to Fidel Castro all they want. But we deserve better from members of Congress.
Just a few weeks ago, Castro locked up 75 dissidents and executed three Afro-Cubans accused of hijacking. Yet, even after that crackdown, some lawmakers still call for an end to sanctions against his regime. They claim American goods and tourists will hasten a democratic transition.
That would be a first. Commerce and tourism with the Soviet Union, for example, didn't bring down the Berlin Wall or produce perestroika. Trade with Moscow did change perceptions about Americans in a part of the world unfamiliar with us. But the Soviet dictatorship collapsed when its economy ran out of gas.

HAVANA - Italian investors in the Cuban telephone monopoly are reportedly increasingly unhappy with their partners in the Cuban government and might even pull out of the joint venture.
The latest and most serious wrinkle between the partners revolves around delays in payment of moneys owed by the Cuban side, said a source
within the company. The source could not name an exact amount, but said it was substantial, enough to imperil the budget of the Cuban telephone enterprise, ETECSA, for 2004.

Cuban government restores citizenship to seven Bay of Pigs invaders AP photos By VANESSA ARRINGTON HAVANA (AP) - Cuba restored citizenship Friday to seven men involved in the disastrous U.S.-backed Bay of Pigs invasion - saying it was reaching out to exiles in a gesture of reconciliation. The men were among about 1,500 U.S.-trained exiles who invaded the island in April of 1961 in an effort to overthrow the young government of Fidel Castro. The three-day invasion ended in disaster for the invaders as more than 1,000 of them were captured and stripped of their Cuban citizenship. Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque handed out Cuban passports to six of the men attending a major immigration conference in Havana. The seventh man was not in attendance. The foreign minister also said a new office would deal with the immigration issues of overseas Cubans and university scholarships would be given to the children of Cuban immigrants wishing to study here. Earlier Friday, Perez Roque urged overseas Cubans here for the three-day conference that opened Friday to join their compatriots on the island in fighting U.S. efforts to squeeze the economy and push out Castro. The conference came as the United States is cracking down on travel to the island by Cuban-Americans.

Cuban government postpones SIU trip

News Reporter Cuban government officials have indefinitely delayed SIU's mission to Cuba two days before the planned departure. Thirty-one faculty members, administrators and researchers from SIU Edwardsville, Carbondale and the medical school in Springfield and several state and local officials had planned to go on the trip to Cuba, which was designed as a humanitarian trip. University spokesperson Scott Kaiser said, "We wanted to meet with various Cuban officials in government to discuss agriculture, biotechnology, education and establish relationships that will be beneficial in the long run to SIU faculty and students." Cuban government officials notified SIU officials Tuesday that "the Cuban government has postponed the Southern Illinois University mission trip to Cuba due to unplanned and unforeseen situations that have arisen beyond their control." The delegation was supposed to leave Thursday. Some members of the delegation were to stay in Cuba for six days, while another group was to stay for 12. Reportedly, the Cuban government left hope for the mission to be rescheduled.

Lecture addresses Cuban government, socialization
By Kevin Shalvey Published: Wednesday, February 11, 2004 Media Credit: Meghan Vendettoli
02/11/2004 - The Cuban government and a Havana community group's efforts to socialize their people and reach out to other countries were the main focus of the multiculturalism lecture given last night at the University of Rhode Island.
The 10th Annual Lecture on Multiculturalism was sponsored by the Multicultural Center at URI and held in the Chafee Social Sciences Center. The key speaker was intended to be Rev. Raul Suarez, the founder of the Martin Luther King Jr. social center in Havana, Cuba.
Melvin Wade, director of the MCC, met Suarez in Cuba during the summer and invited him to speak at the event. Suarez was denied access a United States visa and two experts on Cuban development spoke instead.
The first speaker, Miren Uriarti, a professor of Human Services at the University of Massachusetts Boston, discussed the socialization process of small communities in Cuba since the early 1990s, and the Cuban government's prioritizing of education and healthcare for its people.
Uriarti focused on the community of Pogolotti, one of 15 sections of Havana, Cuba's capital city. The Martin Luther King Jr. Center, which Suarez founded, is located in this community and has had a lasting affect on the Cubans living there.

A Joint Statement by Freedom House, Human Rights First, Human Rights Watch and other human rights organizations on the first anniversary of the crackdown on peaceful dissent in Cuba
Exactly one year ago, on March 18, 2003, the Cuban government launched a massive crackdown on peaceful dissidents, independent journalists, human rights defenders, and independent labor unionists, librarians, medical doctors, and teachers. Almost 90 democracy advocates were detained in a matter of days, their houses thoroughly searched, and many of their belongings confiscated. Letter to the Editor
Cuban Government’s human rights record defended
Wednesday, April 28, 2004 Dear Sir, I, Dr Luis M Luarca, Cuban Refugee in the Cayman Islands, Head of the Cuban Restoration Project which includes The Multiparty Patriotic United System, I am writing this letter to protest the result of the latest voting concerning the Cuban Government’s human rights violation records. My first message is addressed to the Hon Dr Fidel Castro Ruz (President of the State Council and the Ministers ). As it was, is, and will be my intention the Cuban Restoration Project is based in justice, love, joy and peace for all the Cubans, therefore I want to ask you the opportunity to discuss it, in detail. If it is true that my life was, is and probably will be full of emotions due to our political differences, I am not missing the point of Forgiveness and co-operation in the very best interest of the Cuban Nation and our Cuban People inside and outside the National Territory. To be a refugee never should mean to be a betrayer to the homeland.

The Cuban government announces immediate measures against aggressive actions of the Bush administration The harsh and brutal measures that, in addition to a blockade lasting 45 years, were adopted by the United States against Cuba are directly aimed at suffocating our development and reducing to a minimum the hard currency resources which are indispensable to meet our people’s needs of food, healthcare and educational services as well as other essentials. Based on its longstanding experience, with equanimity and the sound unity and high political culture of its people, the Revolution shall immediately respond with the following measures: 1. The suspension, until further notice, of all sales at the hard currency shops except for food and personal hygiene goods and toiletries. We shall guarantee, foremost, those goods and services that the entire population of the country should receive without any kind of privileges. 2. The prices of the subsidized products and those rationed sold to every citizen will not be in the least affected.

Cuban Government Opening Up To Accepting Hip-Hop
Posted on Monday, May 13 @ 16:28:04 PDT by MusicMan
Marc Ramirez of the San Francisco Chronicle visited Cienfuegos, Cuba to get caught up on the country's rising hip-hop scene that is giving Cuban youth a rise to freedom of expression. At first, government was shutting down rap shows, but soon after they allowed the first annual hip-hop festival in Havana, which is now in its seventh year. Ariel Fernandez, who hosts a hip-hop radio show in Havana commented, "At first, the government didn't know what to make of it. Then they saw its power. They realized that without it, the revolution can't succeed." Read more comments?
