Humor POLIT ICS Tuesday, May 11th, 2004 Official Note of the Cuban Government The harsh and brutal measures that, in addition to a blockade lasting 45 years, were adopted by the United States against Cuba are directly aimed at suffocating our development and reducing to a minimum the hard currency resources which are indispensable to meet our people's needs of food, healthcare and educational services as well as other essentials.
Based on its longstanding experience, with equanimity and the sound unity and high political culture of its people, the Revolution shall immediately respond with the following measures:
1. The suspension, until further notice, of all sales at the hard currency shops except for food and personal hygiene goods and toiletries. We shall guarantee, foremost, those goods and services that the entire population of the country should receive without any kind of privileges.
2. The prices of the subsidized products and those rationed sold to every citizen will not be in the least affected.

Organization Name: ALIANZA DE TRABAJADORES DE LA COMUNIDAD (ATC) (Community Workers Alliance)
Leader: Walfrido Moreno
Address: 4431 SW 75 Ave., Miami, FL (meetings)
Prominent members: Varela, Clara (Vice President)
De La Fuente, Evelio Navarro, Julio Synopsis: Walfrido Moreno arrived and settled in New York City in the late 1940's. In the late 1950's Moreno returned to Cuba and resided there for a brief period of time. While in Cuba, Moreno held a minor post in Fulgencio Batista's government, but soon he became disenchanted with what he termed as "governmental abuses" and he abandoned his post. Moreno remained in Cuba until Fidel Castro's takeover, and during that time, he befriended many high ranking revolutionary army officers. Moreno returned to the U.S. in the mid-1960s and resumed anonymity. In 1978, Moreno and a group of Cuban exile figures joined what was later termed "The 75 Group". The group, led by Bernardo Benes and Rev. Manuel Espinosa, travelled to Cuba and engaged in a political dialogue with Cuban government officials. As a result of the encounter between Cuban exiles and Cuban officials, the Cuban government agreed to release hundreds of political prisoners and to re-open flights between Havana and Miami. While in Cuba Moreno reaffirmed his ties with high ranking government figures.

ASHKELON, Israel (AP) - Israel's latest secret immigrants made a complex exodus from Cuba that involved at least three foreign countries and help from the Jewish granddaughter of Emiliano Zapata, the legendary Mexican revolutionary. Israel confirmed Monday the 400 Cuban Jews were brought to Israel in the past five years in a secret operation that had the blessing of Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Israel's military censor lifted a ban Monday on reporting on their arrival, and the Jewish Agency, a quasi-governmental agency dealing with immigration, allowed reporters limited access to the newcomers. Cuban immigrants interviewed at a center in the southern coastal town of Ashkelon said the operation was common knowledge in Cuba. Everyone in Cuba ``knew the Jews were coming to Israel,'' said Alexei Colon Mizrachi, 23, who now lives at the center with his twin brother, Alexander, and their father, Cristobal. A spokesman for the small Jewish community in Cuba angrily denied any secret operation, saying some Cuban Jews had left for Israel, but not in high numbers and not as part of a secret pact. ``That is absolutely false,'' said Jose Miller, president of the Jewish Community House of Cuba. ``In Cuba, there is a general immigration movement to many countries, but there has been no agreement to take members of our Hebrew community to Israel.''

Tuesday, June 29, 1999 IN HAVANA A new revolution is unfolding in Cuba that has nothing to do with guerrilla warfare. In what amounts to a 180-degree turn back to centuries-old healing techniques, the Cuban government is actively promoting low-cost botanical medicines instead of manufactured drugs. It is also encouraging doctors to re-educate themselves in the techniques of natural medicine. Much of the credit for this revolution goes to the continuing U.S. trade embargo. The economic disaster that followed the withdrawal of Soviet aid in the early 1990s made it impossible to obtain many medicines. So the Cuban health-care system was forced to search for alternatives. Cuban medical practitioners didn't have to look far because medicina verde, green medicine, has been part of Cuban culture for centuries.

The decree -eliminating the use of dollars in transactions among Cuban enterprises- was announced by the Central Bank in July 21, and state-run entities were ordered to hand over their dollars and ordered to buy it from Central Bank for their purchases from joint ventures in Cuba, imports and debt payments. But foreign suppliers and businesses in Cuba that sell products to the state-run enterprises complained that they will face further delays in collecting payments and arrears from the cash-strapped state.

MIAMI The Cuban government has released a list of people it calls terrorists. The list, containing 64 names, was released late Sunday by the Cuban Government and printed in the state controlled newspapers. If you live in Miami the list may contain the name of some one you know, or perhaps a relative certainly it contains someone you have seen on television or read about in the local papers. The list is the lead story on local talk radio, certainly on Spanish language television, and is getting mention on some English language newscasts. On it are the names of persons the Cuban Government regards as terrorists people who have participated in actions against the Island Nation in attempts to topple the Castro government. There is Luis Posada Carriles, who is jailed in Panama, accused of attempting to plant a bomb under Castro. There is Orlando Bosch, who is credited with blowing up a Cuban airliner. Also on the list Andres Nazario Sargen, who heads up Alpha 66, the group of aging exiles who once invaded the Island on a regular basis.

Below is official Cuban government reaction to the shooting down of two U.S. planes on Saturday. It is from the Ministry of the Exterior, which is a branch of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
February 25, 1996
Web posted at: 1:15 p.m. EST (1815 GMT) On February 24, 1996 between 3:21 p.m. and 3:28 p.m. two Cessna planes were shot down by our armed forces. They were coming from the Opalocka airport in the state of Florida. The two Cessna planes were pirate planes. As they flew, once again, in the Cuban airspace at a distance between 5 and 8 miles north of the Baracoa Beach west of the city of Havana. Before this, between 10:15 a.m. and 11:27 a.m., three planes of the same kind had invaded Cuban airspace. In this occasion, an airplane from our armed forces went to the place where these pirate planes were and with their presence impeded the violation of the Cuban airspace. The pirate planes then took off to the north. At 3:21 p.m., while they were returning again to Cuba, one of these planes responsible for these incursions was warned by the center of control of air traffic of Havana that they had activated areas of airspace north of the capital and they were warned of the risks they were running by doing this. In response the pilot of the pirate plane said it was clear he couldn't fly in that zone but he was going to do it anyway.

Cuba detains dissidents, restricts U.S. diplomats HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) Cuban authorities have ended a standoff with the hijackers of a Cuban ferry, state-owned Cuban television reported Friday. The television report said military officials boarded the ship Thursday and freed the hostages without firing "a single shot." The report also indicated that everyone aboard jumped into the water. The ferry was hijacked Wednesday and was forced to sail into the Straits of Florida with at least 30 men, women and children aboard, sources told CNN. A Cuban television report Friday, referring to what it called "the operation to liberate the hostages," did not indicate what happened to the hijackers or hostages and did not mention that President Fidel Castro visited the Port of Mariel, where the freed ferry was towed, Thursday. Cuban TV reported the operation began about 1 p.m. Thursday and ended about three hours later.

Hundreds of Cuban Demigr Des meet with Fidel Castro after immigration conference ends
Monday May 24, 2004 By ANDREA RODRIGUEZ Associated Press Writer HAVANA (AP) Hundreds of Cuban Demigr Des, who returned to their native land for a conference designed to promote reconciliation, have met the man most Cuban exiles love to hate President Fidel Castro. Many people attending the conference left Cuba before the 1959 revolution, which brought Castro to power. Most don't share the resentment of exiles who lost their homes and after the government moved toward socialism. Some even openly praised Castro during the three-day conference that began Friday. ``He looked very well,'' Cuban-born Pedro Rodriguez, who now lives in Miami, said Monday of the 77-year-old Castro. ``He has tremendous stamina.'' Others, including some former members of the failed U.S. backed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961, said too many years had passed to continue holding resentments. The communist government restored Cuban citizenship to seven such former enemy invaders during the gathering.
