Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt.
It was almost like a hallucination. Immediate. A sense of dislocation. Something was awry.
A few seconds earlier, seen from the surface, everything had looked normal. The midday sun shot arrows of light through the dappled water, illuminating a routine reef in an isolated backwater of an exhausted sea. But no sooner had I submerged—my bubbles had had no time to disperse nor the mist to clear from my mask—than I knew I was in the grip of the weird.
Time was out of joint.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Location: Caribbean The Caribbean or the West Indies is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. These islands curve southward from the bottom tip of Florida to the Northwest of Venezuela in South America. There are at least 7000 islands, islets, reefs and cayes in the region. They are organized into twenty-five territories including sovereign states, overseas departments and dependencies. The name "West Indies" originates from Christopher Columbus' idea that he had landed in India when he had in fact reached the Americas. The Caribbean consists of the Antilles and the Bahamas and is part of North America.

1. The Issue
In recent years the government of the Republic of Cuba has sought to exploit and expand the mining of Nickel and Cobalt, especially in the Eastern region of their island. This action has raised several concerns that directly, or indirectly effect both the actual physical enviorment of Cuba, as well as the social/political scene, including the issue of Human Rights. Furthermore, the issue of trade is also involved in this scenario as a result of the United States trade embargo against Cuba, as codified in the Helms-Burton Legislation. These U.S. actions have infuriated Canadawhose firms lead the ranks of foreign investors in Cuba. Canada has initiated a complaint against the United States under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
2. Description
At present the economy of Cuba is in a severe state of crisis. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union Cuba now finds herself in a situation where its traditional main export (sugar) will not save the country from further economic difficulties. Thus, the Cuban government has sought mesures in which it can diversify its stagnent economy. Cuba has established 211 joint ventures with foreigners and attracted some $5 billion in foreign investment deals, mostly in tourism, communications, mining, petroleum and agriculture. Havana is eager to attract new investment in biotechnology and assembly plants in Cuba's new free-trade zones. This has included everything to increasing and improving the facilities related to the tourism sector. It has also included reviving and expanding the mining of Nickel and Cobalt.

Episode Description -
"The Bay of Pigs: Part I"
"The Bay of Pigs: Part I " provides historical background and specifically focuses on the political build-up leading to the land invasion of Cuba. This episode describes U.S.-Cuban relations in the 1950s and Cuban society and economy before the Cuban Revolution. It covers Fidel Castro's rise to power, the promises of the Cuban Revolution, and the U.S. response to it. Finally, this episode outlines the development of the CIA plan for the Bay of Pigs invasion, taking the course of events up to the first air strike.
Pre-Viewing Activities
FREE-WRITING PREPARATION FOR "THE BAY OF PIGS: PART I" Ask students to free-write for 20 minutes about their impressions of Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations. What do they think are the most important aspects of those relations, and why do they think so? Ask students how they know what they know (what their sources for information about Cuba and Cuban culture have been). Encourage students to note any experience they have of Cuban culture, or of any other non-U.S. culture.

Monday May 14 11:59 AM ET Explorers Comb Cuban Seas for Treasure, Mysteries By Andrew Cawthorne HAVANA (Reuters) - Barely touched since the colonial era of piracy and shipwrecks, sea bottoms around Cuba are an underwater fantasy world promising treasure-laden sunken ships, insights into times gone by and maybe even a lost city. Once a hub for shipments of gold, silver and other plunder from New World to Old, the Caribbean island's waters likely hide billions of dollars' worth of treasure from hundreds of ships that sank after encountering reefs, storms or pirates. But that is not all that tempts foreign companies, which, in a joint venture with President Fidel Castro (news - web sites)'s government, are beginning an unprecedented, systematic search of one of the world's most-fascinating, least-explored undersea regions. As well as gold-laden Spanish galleons, important secrets and insights into regional history, global environment trends, ancient geography and marine science also lurk in the depths. ``It's a new frontier,'' enthused Soviet-born Canadian ocean engineer Paulina Zelitsky, from British Columbia-based Advanced Digital Communications, poring over video images of hitherto unseen seafloor taken by underwater robots.
