H39.0951.001, 6 points, Tuesday/Thursday, 4-6 p.m.
The course provides a multifaceted understanding of Cuban history, culture and society from the period of Spanish colonialism, through the wars of independence and the Revolution, and into the "special period" of the 1990s. The course examines the many political and cultural transformations and consequently, how the country's artistic legacy manifests the spirit of an era. In addition to theatre visits, film screenings, exhibits, and concerts in New York, students travel to Cuba during the March spring break to interact with the country's artists, writers, and performers and attend lectures, performances, and exhibitions at the Ludwig Foundation, ICAIC, and National Theatre of Cuba.

Solar energy
A boost to Cuban culture In what is being described as the most important educational development in Cuba since the great Literacy Campaign of 1961, when illiteracy was eliminated in just one year, every primary school, secondary school and university will have a computer laboratory by the start of the next academic year so that all Cuban students will have access to IT. Although the island's national grid supplies almost 96% of Cubans with mains electricity, which is itself a significant social achievement of the Revolution, until recently schools in remote and sparsely populated mountain areas did not have electricity. This problem has been overcome by installing solar energy panels. During the ceremony to mark the completion of the scheme, President Fidel Castro stressed that of the 1,944 schools, only 159 have more than 50 pupils and 21 have just one each, but it was decided to include them all. "We haven't gone crazy" he said, " we have merely become more just." Fidel added that there is not one of Cuba's 14 provinces without a computer club for young people. Back to top

An Exhibition Of Contemporary Cuban Culture
February 6 - March 7 2004
"What did we do during the missile crisis? - We danced "
Cuba is a country where the fusion of different cultures has produced some of the world's greatest music and dance. The rhythms of Cuba are now famous the world over because of the success of Buena Vista Social Club and the popularity of Salsa dancing.
In this remarkable exhibition, acclaimed photographer Ian Livesey and Cuban specialist Graham Henderson explore the roots of Afro-Cuban rhythm in the music and dance of Cuba, and in particular of Guantanamo, at the far eastern tip of the island.
Beyond just music and dance, the exhibition also includes many iconic images of Cuba; glorious 1950's American cars cruising bustling side streets, crowds celebrating at a packed baseball game and candid shots of the unique people that make up Cuba's diverse and incredibly resilient communities.
For many however, the true spirit of Cuba is discovered through it's celebrated tradition of dance and rhythm. From Salsa to Cha cha cha, Rumba to Son, The Rhythm of Cuba captures the incredibly seductive sounds and styles of Cuba's rich musical culture. And, during the project, Ian's relationship with Cuban dancing soon became something far beyond the lens - he met and fell in love with Jessica, a principal dancer with The Danza Libre Ballet Company.
"Jessica just came across the room and asked me to dance," he recalls. "I said I didn't dance but she wouldn't take no for an answer. By the end of the dance I think I was already in love with her." Ian and Jessica were married a year later in Ian's home town of Wigan and Jessica is now a highly respected teacher of Cuban dance who works across the north west.

About Us Expo educates public on Cuban culture, history By Basma Douban, Staff Writer Published: 4/28/2003 Media Credit: John Bolognini/Staff Photographer University Professor Roger Hernandez speaks about Cuban-American history Saturday in the Rutgers Student Center on the College Avenue campus. Cuban singer Gloria Estefan urges her fans to continue the tradition of Cuban customs in America with her song "Que Siga La Tradicion." Members of the Rutgers Union of Cuban American Students followed Estefan's advice Saturday at the 9th annual Cuban Expo '03. About 150 people attended the event - held in the Rutgers Student Center on the College Avenue campus - whose theme was maintaining the Cuban heritage and keeping ethnic pride strong. Estefan's music, along with other cultural music, played throughout the day. Members of RUCAS helped convey this message and accomplish this goal by presenting the history of the club as well as that of the country. "As Cuban-Americans we hear of such a rich culture of the good old days," said RUCAS President Grace Vargas, a Rutgers College junior. "Even though we're not living there, we can continue it here in the United States. It's important to continue our tradition because a lot of it got left back in Cuba and there isn't any free communication, so it's important to disseminate our culture."

Cuban-American author Cristina Garcia read excerpts from her three novels Dreaming in Cuban, The Aguero Sisters, and Monkey Hunting on Tuesday, Oct. 28 in the Ekstrom Library Auditorium. Prior to each reading, Garcia introduced each novel, discussing its plot as well as the processes involved in the creation of each. Her first novel, the National Book Award-nominated Dreaming in Cuban, was written in what Garcia calls a haphazard, disorganized fashion. After her first return to Cuba in 1984, Garcia wanted to tell the stories she had heard while there. Originally a poem, Dreaming in Cuban slowly evolved into a full-fledged novel. The story about four Cuban women is staged around the Cuban revolution, an event which was not supported in Garcia"s childhood household. Garcia discussed many aspects of her writing between her readings, divulging both the joys and pains of writing. In response to one question from the audience, Garcia talked about how difficult it is to write a novel given the precarious balance of control and imagination involved. 'Control is the last thing you have when writing a novel,' she stated, but went on to say that one"s imagination must eventually be reigned in.

November 29, 01 SCHOLAR: HURRICANES HELPED SHAPE CUBAN CULTURE, HISTORY When hurricane season in the Caribbean officially ends Friday, (Nov. 30) many Cubans, especially farmers, will probably breathe a sigh of relief. They survived Hurricane Michelle's wrath earlier this month, but the fallout was five deaths and ruined crops, wrecked sugar mills and destroyed homes. Hurricanes are a fact of life in Cuba, which has historically been hard-hit during the annual four-month Caribbean season. Some may grow accustomed to dealing with the recurring storms, but in a new book, historian Dr. Louis A. Perez Jr. contends that the hurricanes have significantly affected the culture and its people. "My premise is that historians focus a great deal on what people do together, but now and then, the forces of nature overwhelm a culture and affect how cultures become what they are," said Perez, J. Carlyle Sitterson professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Nature opens up a new dimension weather, calamity to historical research." In "Winds of Change: Hurricanes and the Transformation of Nineteenth-Century Cuba" (UNC Press, 2001), Perez, a New York native whose grandfather was born in Cuba, examines questions about national character and recurring calamities. "What makes the French French? What makes Americans Americans? One factor is environment weather patterns, famine, harsh climates, earthquakes, floods are all assimilated into cultural characteristics," he said.

http://www.international-relations.com/wbcm6-1/WBCubanMusic.htm
The Transnational Politics of Cuban Music and Cuban Culture by R. James Ferguson Cuban Music in its Cultural Context In the case of Cuba, the politics of music is especially seminal since the island is a rich and creative source of different music styles that have been largely preserved, in part because of proactive government policies. These affirmative policies include the maintenance of research centers, free music education, support for public performance spaces and trova houses, combined with control of the working life of musicians through State-controlled empresas or agencies (Acosta 1991, p199, p207; Manuel 1991, p288; Sweeney 2001, pp11-12, p162; Fairley 2000a, p393). These policies are aimed at promoting "a cosmopolitan diversity of musics, including modern and traditional Western art music, Afro-Cuban cult music, regional folk genres, and all manner of local and foreign popular musics," with the exception of punk rock (Manuel 1991, p289). Ironically, the U.S. embargo has also slowed down the interaction with mainstream styles from North America, reducing some of the economic and cultural pressures that might have led to greater homogenisation of Cuban music. Moreover, over the last decade, one of the key issues for Cuba has been how its socialist and revolutionary legacy will adapt under the increasing pressures of globalisation and economic austerity (for one negative view of limited access to global resources, see Amaro 2000). Music, in terms of its messages, income-generation and social process, is one of the areas where the opportunities and pressures of globalisation have begun to be experienced and manipulated within contemporary Cuba.

Cuban music has exploded on the world scene, the Cuban ballet is one of the world's best and the theater in Cuba offers it all! Dynamite groups like Cubanismo are touring the United States and simply setting the crowds in motion. Cuban films like Chocolate and Strawberry have won international acclaim in recent years! Then there is the Cuban ballet which is second perhaps to only the ballet in Russia. Music is everywhere in Cuba, even on the streets. The Cubans are highly educated and making a mark in almost everything they get involved with nowadays. No matter what an American wants to see in Cuba, whether it is Cuban films, the theatre, the ballet, the artists at work or just to hear Cuban music, the time to go is now. We say, go now, before it all gets spoiled with the American influence and dollar which is just around the corner.
