Cuban Culture Tour
February 14-21, 2004
Havana bustles with activity and has a thriving cultural scene. During our previous Human Services Tour visits we got a glimpse of some of the cultural dimensions of this vibrant city. This year, working closely with our friends and colleagues in Havana we are pleased to offer our second cultural tour. For the first five nights we will stay in Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, at the Plaza Hotel, across the Central Parque square from the National Opera and National Ballet and close to the Old Havana music scene. Our days will be spent visiting arts and cultural schools, academies, museums and programs. Some are usually off limits to tourists, others are popular spots you should not miss. On some evenings we will attend opera, dance or concerts. On evenings when there is not a planned activity you will be offered suggestions and group outings to restaurants, nightclubs and music venues. Why this is an "insider's tour": We are working closely with a Foundation that is well connected to many of the cultural actives in Havana to find the most interest and enjoyable places to visit. We will also have simultaneuos translation and our own bus to transport us. This will not be a large "package" tour. The size will be limited and the service will be unsurpassed. And most of all you will have a ball!

About I Archives I Books I Culture I FAQ I Restaurants I Fishing I Food I Miami I Music I Recipes I Search I Shopping Vizcaya Continues to Impress T he Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a real gem located just minutes from downtown and the beaches. You'll see many Cubans at Vizcaya, especially on Sundays when it's a tradition to bring out-of-town guests here. Vizcaya was built between 1912 and 1916 as the winter residence of James Deering, a very rich Chicago industrialist. He was one of the founders of the International Harvester Company, which must have made a lot of tractors to pay for this place!
Vizcaya from the waterfront.
If you've ever spent a winter in Chicago, you'll understand why he spent all this dough for a winter escape! Deering loved Italian architecture, which is featured throughout the house and attached gardens. The mansion, formal gardens and grounds cover 30 acres overlooking Biscayne Bay. The house includes 70 rooms, many filled with paintings, antiques, and sculpture. A Place without Seasons Three Guys from Miami? How about Two Guys and a Girl from Miami? Three Miami theater students have hit the big time with an invitation to perform their original work in the 8th annual New York International Fringe Festival. FringeNYC is the largest multi-arts festival in North America, with more than 200 theater companies from all over the world performing for 16 days Ghost Heart Reviewed by Jorge Castillo Quite naturally, we read a lot of books about Cuba. Many of the books we read are heartfelt recollections of the pre-Castro days of Cuba. As memoirs, they give great insights into a life and culture that no longer exists in Cuba today. However, many of the Cuba-themed books we read lack a strong literary focus. That's why it was very refreshing to discover a work of fiction that is not only well written, but remains true to its Cuban roots.

UM immersed in Three Days of Cuban Culture
Cuban pride abounds in cultural event series
By Marquita K. Bell Published: Friday, April 18, 2003 Media Credit: Marquita Bell Musica Latina: A live band performs at the UC patio as part of the Three Days of Cuban Culture, sponsored by Federacion de Estudiantes Cubanos.
Media Credit: Marquita Bell Across Generations: Members of the Miami community from a wide range of ages and cultures participated in on-campus events for FEC’s Three Days of Cuban Culture.
Cuban Cubanismo [Cuban pride] spread when the Federacion de Estudiantes Cubanos [FEC], recently named Organization of the Year, hosted Three Days of Cuban Culture, a series of events that showcased Cuban cultures and traditions to anyone who was interested.
"We all have a common link and that's tradition," Cristina Arriaza, vice-president and coordinator of the events, said. "All of this is coordinated by the middle generations, linking the older and younger generations. Although time progresses, traditions do remain."
"The times have changed, but our traditions remain," Robert Castro, outgoing FEC president, said.

GEOGRAPHY
Cuba is the largest, most varied and most beautiful of the Greater Antilles islands. It is long and narrow, extending approximately 1,260 km east-west in length; its width ranges from 193 km to 32 km. No point in the Island is more than 80 km from the sea. Cuba's territory, or the Cuban Archipelago, includes the Island of Youth (Isla de la Juventud) and several coastal islets and cays; it covers a land area of 110,861 km2.
Cuba, often called the "Pearl of the Antilles," has a subtropical trade wind climate, adequate rainfall, significant mineral resources, and vast areas of level fertile land suitable for mechanized farming.
To the south of Matanzas is Cienaga de Zapata, known for its marshy lowlands where crocodiles are commercially raised. Also in this province is Varadero, known for its beaches of fine white sand, clear and transparent waters and comfortable resorts.
Santiago de Cuba, also rich in tradition and architectural treasures, is located on the south coast at the island's eastern end. The rugged topography of the Sierra Maestra, with elevations of up to 1,980 m above sea level, is unique in the island and famous for its sceneries of breath-taking beauty and unbelievable variety.
