"DoktorandInnen" / Graduate Students – Department of Physics, Portland State University (Oregon/USA)
MSc Ph.D. positions in crystallography/applied physics
The Department of Physics at Portland State University is seeking candidates (m/f) for MSc. and Ph.D. projects in the field of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based nanocrystallography The graduate student projects focus on different aspects of the development of a novel nanocrystal characterization method. This method will utilize a combination of high-resolution phase contrast imaging in TEM and goniometry of direct lattice vectors . Occasional travel to the National Center for Electron Microscopy (Ernest Orlando Lawrence National Laboratory) in Berkeley (California) and work on an atomic resolution Z-contrast scanning TEM in this center will also be part of these projects. The Department of Physics is a major user of Portland State University’s electron microscopy center, where a state-of-the-art analytical TEM has recently been installed and several other TEMs and SEMs are available. Portland State University is with an estimated enrollment of about 24,000 students Oregon’s largest and only urban university. The ideal candidate has a diploma in crystallography, physics, chemistry, or mineralogy with a strong background and interest in geometrical-structural crystallography, transmission electron microscopy, and applied physics. Computer- and experimental skills are essential for the success of the projects. While some projects will require more experimental skills, some other projects will require more computer skills (notably JScript, Java, VBScript, Visual Basic, or either C++ or Delphi).

Dr Kate Wright Our is unique in the UK in combining high P/T research (based on diamond- and multi-anvil cells), with computational mineral physics. The research involves a close collaboration between our laboratories in UCL and the David Faraday Research Laboratory in the Royal Institution , formally associated with the Department. We study industrially important materials, and mantle/core minerals (particularly their equations of state, defect and rheological properties). Some recent highlights include: First integrated application of neutron diffraction and acoustic emission to rock physics, and the microscopic origin of thermal cracking in rock ( Meredith, Wood , GRL in press W e have recently published papers in Nature and Physical Review Letters describing the first ab initio free energy calculations on high P/T solid and liquid Fe and its alloys, to determine (i) the viscosity of the outer core, (ii) the high P melting temperature of Fe, and (iii) the probable composition of the outer and inner core ( Alfe Price Vocadlo Our calculations on the defect properties of perovskite in Nature show that Al could have a major effect on its elastic properties ( Brodholt Our high-pressure, electrical conductivity measurements, reported in

An excellent text This is a fish of a good book! The information that has come out in the last ten years about photonic band-gap materiels can be confusing and offputting. This book enables any astute reader a comprehension of the various properties that come into play when dealing with and controlling the propogation of light. I recommend it highly for use in the classroom as well as for the bedstand. Quite an enjoyable read! Graduate students (or advanced physics undergrads) will appreciate the beautiful analogy this book makes between solid state physics, which gave us semiconductor devices, and the newer field of photonics, which promises a revolution in optical devices. The writing is clear and consise, and the many colorful illustrations aid the reader in formulating a picture of how it all works. Just plain WELL DONE more physics texts should read like this one. a brand new theory With help of this new theory,we can turn so many things into realities which can't even be imagined several years ago. This theory urges us to look on things in a brand new way! I think miracles will come forth after our studying.
