Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers in northwestern Illinois, the 2,500-acre Mississippi Palisades State Park is rich in American Indian history. Natural Features Palisades is the word used to describe a line of lofty, steep cliffs usually seen along a river, and Mississippi Palisades, 3 miles north of Savanna in Carroll County, handsomely lives up to its name. Caves are evident as are dangerous sink holes-limestone caves that go straight down. Erosion has carved intriguing rock formations, including Indian Head, with its aquiline characteristics, and Twin Sisters, a pair of humanoid figures on the bluff tops. The U.S. Interior Department recognized the remarkable nature of this area when in 1973 it designated acreage here as a national landmark. Animal life, within the park and the river areas immediately adjoining it, is varied. Waterfowl and shorebirds are numerous, as are wild turkeys. Striking pileated woodpeckers make their home in the park, and depending on ice conditions, eagles feed at the river in January and February. Because so many birds migrate along the river, their lyrical songs can be heard at the Mississippi Palisades each spring and fall.

has the resources to put you on the right trail. NASSPA is a non-profit, all volunteer organization that promotes this rapidly growing sport by organizing races, recreational tours and instructive clinics and meetings with an emphasis on safe, responsible care and handling. NASSPA also grooms more than 20 kilometers of multiuse trails in the Anchorage area. All this is made possible by the hard work of volunteers and through funds raised from club events, membership dues and trail user donations. Skijor (ski-jur) is a Norwegian word that means "ski-driving" - that is, a cross-country skier utilizing a dog, or dogs as draft animals. Pulk (p-ulk) is a small sled pulled by a dog or dogs loaded with gear. In races it carries weight to handicap exceptionally fast dogs, or light, strong skiers. The skier is tethered to a pulk and follows it.

    NCCSEF Annual Report
This was the most successful year yet for the NCCSEF. We met our top priority of raising enough money to save the J1 Scandinavian Cup Trip. $11,360 was raised to support the J1 trip, with $4000 pledged for each of the next two years. There was a combination of donors including small $30 donations from trip alumni and large donations from private individuals. 2003-2004 saw a shift in the way the NCCSEF raises funds. The board made a decision to eliminate the newsletter and membership and instead focus on donations. This allowed us to drastically cut expenses and focus on fund-raising. We raised more money through donations alone than we have raised through membership and donations combined the last couple of years.
