There are over 20 miles of trails available for walkers, hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Our extensive 200 km community trail network is equally divided between beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels. We also maintain 40 km of skating set trails. The terrain ranges from wide open spaces, through gently rolling countryside to challenging descents. Our extensive ski shop can provide rental equipment or you can book lessons for any level of skier SCENIC GUIDED SKIING: At 1:30 in the afternoon of each day we have a guided 90 minute tour of our ski trails. Intensity will be governed by fitness level of those attending. Longer guided tours, 2 hours or more, can be arranged.

Skiing in Carson National Forest

Taos Ski Valley, Red River and Sipapu Ski Areas are all located on portions of the National Forest and provide downhill and nordic skiing. Plenty of opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding also exist on the Carson. Detailed guides for many of the trails listed are available at Carson National Forest offices. Winter Recreation Opportunities: Shared Trails
Some trails are shared by cross-country skiers , snowshoers, and snowmobilers. Please keep trails safe by operating snowmobiles at minimum speed near skiers or snowshoers and maintaining minimum speed until well beyond those on foot. Skiers and snowshoers should also be alert for snowmobilers. Some trails are designated for skiers only and some for snowmobiles only. Restrictions are posted, but check with the local Forest Service office for more information. Beware of Hazards

The UMass Dartmouth Outing Club uses the environment as a teaching tool to educate people about the outdoors. The Outing Club introduces the fundamentals of many outdoor activities such as rock climbing, backpacking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking to name some. Activity levels range from easy to strenuous in order to give people the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors at their level of expertise. People are given the chance to try out different types of activities that they have been thinking of trying, but never had the chance to do so. The club also educates people about safe and environmentally sound hiking and camping practises. The Outing Club also has subscriptions to many outdor publications, and various other trip planning information. This information is open to browsal to all members. It is also a member of several outdoor orginazations, including Application Mountain Club, and the Intercollegiate Outing Club Association. In addition to outdoor activities the club publishes it's own bimonthly newsletter called Trail News during the school year and a trimonthly activity calendar.

The dominant tree of the area is the ponderosa pine, however alligator juniper dot the landscape. The Alligator Juniper is named for the checkered pattern on the bark of older trees, which resembles an alligator's hide.
