Tamarack XC Ski center Trail Map

There are three commercial X-Country ski centers in the Mammoth Lakes area. Tamarack Lodge operates a large area in the Lakes Basin offering groomed trails, rentals, instruction, and food/lodging facilities. Rock Creek Lodge in Rock Creek operates a unique ski-in ski-out lodge/ski facility.
In addition, the town of Mammoth Lakes has marked out a series of ski trails generally following some of the summer bike trails, offering free skiing on ungroomed trail. There is almost always someone else who gets up earlier than you so rarely do you not have a broken trail to follow on the town trails. If you want to break your own trail, there is about a zillion square miles of forest around town, some steep, some flat, all snow covered. Choose your place.
Tamarack Cross-Country Ski Center
30 kilometers of groomed track and skating lanes. Rentals, lodging, and instruction. Meals available. Fee required to use groomed trails in the Lakes Basin. Because of it's high elevation (over 8,000 ft) Tamarack is guaranteed a long season with good snow conditions, even when spring has come elsewhere. There is a great lodge at the center, where you can leave your skiis outside your door, and take off on the trails whenever you want to. Check out the Tamarack site for complete information.
Rock Creek Lodge

At the threshold of the John Muir Wilderness, Rock Creek Lodge offers a unique winter backcountry experience for beginning and advanced cross-country skiers alike. The wood stoves in our recently insulated cabins will keep you cozy morning and night. Seven cabins offer running water and bathrooms, while six cabins remain rustic, with guests using the central shower building for restroom facilities. Our fantastic, hearty meals breakfast and dinner served family style in the dining room satisfy even the biggest mountain appetites.

Surrounded by a herd of bison, with a few elk mingling in as they paw the frozen ground in search of forage. Or bumping along in a strange moon vehicle through a world enveloped in white. Winter in Yellowstone brings you all these scenes. If you head for Yellowstone for cross-country skiing, your choices are the Mammoth area ( Mammoth trails ), accessible by bus from Bozeman, Montana, or the Old Faithful area ( Old Faithful trails ), a 4 hour sno-cat ride from either Mammoth or the southern gateway to the park above Jackson, Wyoming. I took the ride to Old Faithful from Mammoth. My bruised rear was amply rewarded with winter vistas shrouded in steam, trumpeter swans sailing in waters kept unfrozen by the geologic heat, and coyotes silhouetted in a world of white.

26 miles up Minnesota's renowned Gunflint Trail
On the shores of beautiful East Bearskin Lake Open year round Bearskin Lodge resort features some of the best canoeing, cross country skiing and most pristine wilderness left in the world. Spring marks the yearly struggle between winter and summer. As days grow longer and warmer, the melting snow is replenished by intermittent bursts of unleashed fury as winter reluctantly loosens its grasp. Slowly, ever so slowly, the first greens erupt and winter has lost. In the summer families venture north to our resort to share quality time together. Old friends reunite. Fishing lines are baited and the thrill of a fighting trophy dances in the minds of adults and children alike. Swimming, canoeing and lazy afternoons go hand in hand. Autumn is the season for lovers. The air is crisp and cool, just right for holding hands and hiking amongst the changing colors before cuddling up in front of a crackling fire at the end of a romantic day. Winter is a very special time of year in the north country. It comes early and stays late. At its best, it's served up cold; perfect for cross-country skiing. Experience the quiet solitude, gliding over a carpet of white. Tree boughs droop under the weight of freshly fallen snow. Moose, usually shy creatures, are frequently seen foraging for food.

Franklin Creek State Natural Area is located in Lee County, one mile northwest of the village of Franklin Grove and eight miles east of Dixon just north of Illinois Route 38. The beautiful Franklin Creek flows throughout the 664-acre park. Several large natural springs, hardwood forests, bedrock outcroppings, and a large variety of flora and fauna comprise a pristine ecosystem.
History
Pioneer families in the 1830s found the Franklin Creek area to be an inviting new home on the sometimes unfriendly prairie. Large, cool springs provided ample amounts of pure drinking water and early refrigeration, hardwood forests provided construction materials, and the creek provided fish for food and water power to run saw and grist mills. The deep, pleasant valleys protected by limestone and sandstone bluffs made ideal homesites shielded from cold winter winds. The mill spring, the largest in the park, provided water power for the largest grist mill in Lee County, constructed in 1847. Still today, many ponds and rock outcroppings along Franklin Creek carry names given to them by pioneer families.
