Sunken Meadow State Park
History
Governor Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park was assembled from several smaller parcels but most of its original area of 520 acres was acquired from the late George B. Lamb and his wife, Antoinette Storrs Lamb. A large section of the beach consisting of about 400 feet of frontage on Long Island Sound was conveyed to the State by the Town of Smithtown in 1928. Since then the park has been expanded by various acqusitions to a total of over 1200 acres. The park takes its name from the low meadlowland which separates the narrow sandy beach from the uplands. Access originally was by way of a quarter-mile-long boardwalk erected on stilts across the meadows and creek. Later big parking fields and a modern bridge and roadway for automobiles were built.

When the wind isn't blowing and snow is on the ground, the cross-country skiing opportunities in North Dakota are plentiful. Best bests include the numerous trails in the Turtle Mountains. Many trails leave from the Lake Metigoshe area. Rental equipment is available, and the trails wind through a combination of lakes, meadows, and forested areas. One trail follows the USA-Canada border for several miles. Some trails are groomed weekly, and even have warming houses available. Whitetail deer and ruffed grouse are commonly seen. Lodging is available in Bottineau and on Lake Metigoshe at the Turtle Mountain Lodge. Downhill skiing is available at the nearby Bottineau Winter Park. The Cross Ranch near Hensler has 10 miles of marked and groomed trails. These trails provide a perspective of a North Dakota river bottom environment that many have never seen. Cross-country skiing on groomed trails is a favorite winter sport in Utah. In addition, Utah has hundreds of roads and trails in its National Forests and on BLM land which are ideal for cross-country skiing. There are mountain top routes, tracks through snow-dusted red rock, historic trails... even some of our snowed-in golf courses get into the act. Backcountry skiers should be well-prepared, and should check weather and avalanche forecasts prior to setting out. Many agree that Utah's backcountry is some of the most accessible and has the best snow. View the cross-country area ski chart
