Restoring the productivity of marginal soils with organic amendments
Sharon B. Hornick and James F. Parr
Abstract
Introduction
Regular additions of organic materials such as animal manures and crop residues are of utmost importance in maintaining the tilth, fertility and productivity of agricultural soils, protecting them from wind and water erosion, and preventing nutrient losses through runoff and leaching. These materials have predictable beneficial effects on soil physical properties such as increased water-holding capacity, soil aggregation, soil aeration and permeability, and decreased soil crusting and bulk density (USDA, 1957; 1978). Failure to recycle organic wastes and residues, intensive row crop production, and lack of sod-based crop rotations can result in extensive soil degradation and a decline in productivity due to excessive soil erosion and loss of fertility. The continuing desertification of Sub-Saharan Africa and the dustbowl of the central U.S. Great Plains in the 1930's can be attributed largely to improper farming methods that neglected the importance of soil organic master in crop production. When organic materials, such as compost, animal manures, crop residues and sewage sludges are used as the primary sources of plant nutrients, the management system has often been referred to as "organic farming" (USDA, 1980). More recently, the terms alternative, regenerative. low-input, and sustainable have been used to describe farming systems that recycle available on-farm organic resources and sometimes off-farm materials such as municipal wastes, to maintain or improve soil productivity.

http://www.und.edu/misc/ndrural/Sustain. Agric..htm
Sustainable Agriculture Organic and Beyond The campaign seeks to maintain strong organic standards and to promote agriculture that is local, small-scale and family operated, biologically diverse, humane, and socially just. The ultimate goal of this campaign is to replace the industrial agriculture model with a new vision of farming and the natural world. The Land Stewardship Project The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1982 to foster an ethic of stewardship for farmland, to promote sustainable agriculture and to develop sustainable communities. LSP is a grassroots membership organization made up of farmers, as well as rural and urban residents working together to: 1) secure a healthful food supply, 2) preserve soil, water and wildlife, 3) support diversified, profitable family-sized farms, 4) organize communities for positive change, 5) hold corporations and government accountable, 6) and create a new sustainable vision for our food and agriculture system. The Electronic Magazine of Metropolitan Agriculture The logic behind metrofarming is inescapable. Decades of sustained assault from policy-makers and vested interests have left the family farm hovering near extinction, the corporate farm ascendent, and a way of life imperiled. So the small-scale farmer must bring exceptional resourcefulness to bear on the problem of finding a viable niche in which to operate and ecological space where he or she can survive and prosper. Cities are where the money is, and city dwellers are clamoring for clean food in growing numbers. As new-fangled mystics are fond of mentioning, the word for "crisis" in Chinese is the same as the word "opportunity." Michael Olson's MetroFarm tells how a farmer who is willing to innovate, experiment, and adapt to current market realities can compete.

Thank you for writing back promptly. Gopal is a Jersy and was born here about twelve years ago, he lived only briefly in a nearby community before returning to New Goloka. I have taken care of him for most of the two years I have been here. Before that I can't say for certain how he was treated. He doesn't have and behavior problems, he is mild and affectionate, we get along great. I am afraid he has been lonely though, judging from his behavior. This has been due to my ignorance. I am fond of the quote by Srila Prabhupada that temple authorities should make sure all the devotees are jolly and eating a lot of prsadam. Gopal is a devotee too and I must keep him jolly by your mercy.
If you have worked with Gopal for the last two years on a daily basis you should now be well acquainted and be able to understand his desires. Yes like humans they require some show that you care about them. This should be corrected by a daily visit where you take the time to talk to him, occasional brushing (daily is not really necessary) and by your gentle touch indicate to him that you wish to see that he is well. Check his legs, rub his neck and brisket ... you probably know where he likes to be scratched do it occasionally.' Editor's note: On November 30, 1999, a meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle made international headlines when thousands of nonviolent protesters sat down in the streets and stopped the opening ceremonies cold. They had come to register their outrage with the environmental, labor, and human rights implications of the rules governing the WTO since its creation in 1994, as well as with now proposals up for debate in Seattle.
Where do we go from here? On The Streets Of Seattle Paul Hawkins on being teargassed and pepper-sprayed and seeing the future at the WTO protests.
W hen I was able to open my eyes, I saw laying next to me a young man, nineteen, maybe twenty at the oldest. He was in shock, twitching and shivering uncontrollably from being tear-gassed and pepper-sprayed at close range. His burned eyes were tightly closed and he was panting irregularly. Then he passed out. He went from excruciating pain to unconsciousness on a side walk wet from the water that a medic had poured over him to flush his eyes. Pepper spray is derived from cayenne peppers. It is foodgrade, pure enough to be used in salsa. The spray used in Seattle was the strongest available, containing 10 percent to 15 percent oleoresin capsicum, with a 1.5 to 2.0 million Scoville heat unit rating. One to three Scoville units are when your tongue can first detect hotness. The jalapeno pepper is rated from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units. The habanero, usually considered the hottest pepper in the world, is rated around 300,000 Scoville units. The following description was written by a police officer who sells pepper spray on his web site. It is about his first experience being sprayed, during a training exercise:

Controlled-Release Fertilizers for Vegetable Crops Grown in Florida in the BMP Era
Eric Simonne and George Hochmuth This publication is one of a series entitled Fertilizer and Irrigation Management in the BMP Era. This series is divided into nine principles described in the Introduction Chapter (HOS-897). This publication is part of Principle 2, "Soil Test and Follow the Recommendations." BMP implementation requires a global approach to production management. However, for presentation purposes, each aspect of vegetable production is described in a separate publication. Controlled-release fertilizers (CRF) are an alternative to conventional soluble fertilizers where nutrient release into the environment is of concern (especially nitrate nitrogen). In theory, CRFs allow the grower to better synchronize nutrient release with the crops nutritional requirement, thereby reducing the risk of leaching between time of application and plant uptake. Most CRFs are in the granular form (prills), but some liquid formulations are now available. Due to high manufacturing costs, CRFs have been mainly used with high-value ornamental crops. Recently, CRFs have been included in the citrus BMPs for Florida. The renewed interest in CRFs for vegetable production has stimulated on-going research efforts which should increase the amount of available information and grower use.

Introduction Thank you for coming
Hi
N uggets: What are they? Well, as far as this webpage is concerned they are those phrases or paragraphs that seem to stand out, or cut to the chase as they say at the other side of the pond, and get right to the point when tackling the subjects of concern to Satori-5; like Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), and Hazardous Radiations Sickness (HRS). These "nuggets" will invariably be short. They are created here particulary for those visitor who, due to substantial health challenges of one kind or another, simply do not have the health or energy to read the whole book, report, or document that these little gems are taken from. They are also, however, for any visitor who find themselves on a very tight budget with regard to time. T hese "nuggets" will be chosen because of their clarity, their simplicity, their power. They will be chosen because they seem to me to contain the essence of what the author is trying to say in his or her work. And if some of them seem to echo or repeat what has been said before that will be because I deem it worthy of repitition; for there are many out there who seem to be finding it very difficult to understand or accept the realities behind the issues with which these "nuggets" deal. I make no appology for this.

Recently we felt the urge to also publish small booklets of material not commonly available on the commercial market. This could include both original material and reprints of out-of-print literature. Potential contents could include essays, poetry, fiction, and artwork. Before this series concept came to mind, the press had already produced one booklet as part of BSN No. 43-44 (see Back Issues page). The booklet has also been offered separately from that issue and is listed below. As of now one other booklet has been added to the list. As suggested above, check out this page every so often. Here are the pamphlets now available: “The Challenge: Building a New Society” by Ron Ginther. Animals in Islam I Animals in Islam Excerpts are from the book by the same name, written by Al-Hafiz B.A. Masri , the first Sunni Imam of the Shah Jehan mosque (Woking, U.K.) when it was the Islamic center of Europe. He is widely respected for the depth of his scholarship in this field. (An Imam is a scholar who has studied the Koran and memorized it in its entirety.) The sources quoted in this book are the Qur'an Majeed, the first source of Islamic law (Shari'ah); Hadith or Tradition, the second source; and Ijtihad, inference by analogy, the third source. Together, these three sources make up Islamic case law or 'Juristic Rules" (qwdidatul-fiqhiyah) that are the guidelines to be followed for any legal question. Many issues relating to animals, such as vivisection, factory farming, and animal rights did not exist 14 centuries ago and therefore, no specific laws were passed about them. To decide on issues developed in recent times, Islamic Jurisprudence (fiqh) has left it to Muslim Jurists (fuqaha'a) to use their judgement by inference and analogy, based on the three above-mentioned sources. Many Many thanks to CHAI where the following sections were taken from.
