Former Curriculum: Note, a new undergraduate curriculum is being developed.
Soils and Environment is one of the study areas within the agronomy major. A description of the other study areas within the agronomy major can be accessed via the Home Page. Members of the Soils and Land Resources Faculty teach the Soils courses within the Agronomy rubric and serve as advisors to students who select this option.
Soil and Environment Study Area
This study area gives students an understanding of soil as a natural resource and as a component of all terrestrial ecosystems. The student will learn how soils influence ecological processes which take place above and below ground. An understanding of these processes will enable the student to deal with traditional agricultural production issues as well as environmental management problems such as groundwater protection, and the most appropriate use for a particular landscape. Students interested in preparing for graduate work in soils can aim toward a variety of special areas including soil biology, fertility, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, and morphology. Department of Crop and Soil Sciences
What is Crop Science? Crop science is the study of plants that are used to produce food and fiber for humans and feed for animals. Modern crop science includes basic and applied courses in a diversity of study areas. The crop science major allows students flexibility in preparing for careers. Careful course selection in the first two years permits students to choose from numerous electives during their junior and senior year. Elective courses in genetics, chemistry, computer science, animal sciences, botany, economics, business, engineering, entomology, plant pathology, and other areas broaden the scope of education. Practical Experiences Many courses in the crop science major include laboratories in which students obtain experience related to their coursework. Internships provide practical experience in crop sciences, and students may arrange to receive course credits for internships. Part-time or full-time internships may be arranged with experiment stations, businesses, industries, or government agencies. Scientists in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences offer work-study opportunities to students to assist in research. A special problem course in agronomy awards academic credit for experience in research. Leadership training is provided through the Agronomy Club and other campus activities. Career Opportunities Career opportunities for crop science graduates are diverse. Employment opportunities are found in agribusiness sales and service, education, financial institutions, government service, and farming. Specific areas of employment are agricultural business manager, agricultural chemical sales and promotion, agricultural extension agent, agricultural missionary, farmer, farm manager, international agriculturalist, herbicide specialist, industrial agronomist, and research technician.

BSc CROP AND SOIL SCIENCE Introduction
The degree programme in Crop and Soil Science provides you the opportunity to study the growth of crops as influenced by both the soil characteristics and condition, and by the aerial environment. The programme will develop your understanding of the management of crops to produce useful products for man. The growth of crops continues to be an important focus of scientific investigation, and new developments in other areas of science are increasingly being applied in crops (e.g. genetic engineering of crop plants, GMOs; bio-control of plant disease, and the production of bio-active molecules) as well as meeting the challenges of achieving sustainable systems of crop production. The degree will give you the opportunity of developing a career in research, crop consultancy, and in the commercial sector either in the UK or overseas. Programme Structure
The degree programme covers the physical, chemical and biological behaviour of soils and the biological basis of crop production and protection. This degree is available as a Designated degree (3 years) or an Honours degree (4 years). Some courses are compulsory and some optional, allowing you to tailor the programme to your needs. Each course may include formal lectures, practical classes, field visits and tutorials and student-centered learning. The 3-term year is divided into two teaching half sessions of 15 weeks (12 weeks teaching plus exams). In the first year students study six courses, and in subsequent years eight courses.

The major in Soil and Crop Sciences provides the required core courses and the flexibility to develop a broad-based understanding and appreciation for the basic natural and social sciences; communication skills, and to explore human interests and leadership potential. Students from a wide range of rural and urban backgrounds learn principles that apply to the current challenges in soil, plant, and environmental sciences. Each graduating senior with a major in Soil and Crop Sciences will participate in an assessment of the educational progress of students within this major. Presentations in senior seminar, performance in the senior-level crop and soil management courses, and performance on the exit evaluation will be used to assess student learning. There are seven concentrations that permit specialization in subjects that require education in technical areas but continue to provide flexibility for students to develop broad-based interests. A student may major in Soil and Crop Sciences without declaring a specific concentration. Emphasis is on providing the student maximum flexibility in tailoring the curriculum to meet individual needs. A seed science option within one of the concentrations and a second major program with agricultural business is also available. Undergraduate Concentrations
