Introduction to Paratuberculosis and Crohn's Disease: Got Milk?
by Jack Norris, RD
Director, Vegan Outreach Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease . It causes inflammation of the intestines which can result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malabsorption of nutrients, and fistulas (holes in the intestines). It can occur in isolated parts or throughout the intestines. Crohn’s disease can vary from mild to life-threatening. It is typically treated with steroids which can have many unpleasant side effects. There has been much debate about the cause of Crohn’s disease; it is generally considered to be unknown by most of the medical community. Michael Greger, MD has done a great deal of research on Crohn’s revealing that many, if not most, cases may be caused by a species of bacteria that is both hard to detect and hard to kill with typical antibiotic therapy. The bacteria reside in some cows and are likely transferred to humans through both milk and meat. Unfortunately, some vegans have been diagnosed with Crohn’s. There may be several explanations for this:
  • The bacteria have a long incubation period and these vegans may have been infected before becoming vegan.

If you do, any latest research information? Dear Reader, Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a chronic, inflammatory disease that may cause pain, fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, loss of weight, and numerous other complications. Most commonly, the terminal ileum, where th e end of the small intestine meets the large intestine, is inflamed. Ulcers may form on the intestinal walls that have become extremely thick from the prolonged inflammation. Crohn's disease can affect a person of any age, but is found most often in adolescents, young adults, and in people over 60. There is no known cause, although there is a slight tendency to inherit the disease. Approximately 20% of patients with Crohn's di sease have another family member affected by the disease. It may come from an abnormal reaction to either allergies or an infectious agent, like a virus. In most developed countries, approximately three to six new cases develop per every 100,000 people ea ch year. Long-term medical supervision is common because the severity of the disease varies and different treatments are administered. There is no cure for the disease, but with treatment, medical practitioners hope to suppress inflammation, permit healing of dama ged tissue, and relieve symptoms.

Causes of CD are un known but likely to involve complex gene-environment interactions. The Finding Two groups of investigators recently reported finding variants of the NOD2 gene associated with increased susceptibility to CD . Detailed abstractions of these two studies are available on-line and are part of the HuGE database of published literature (in preparation) In a family study, Ogura et al. found that a frameshift mutation resulting from a 1-bp insertion at nucleotide 3020 was associated with CD. The investigators also conducted a case-control study comparing the frequency of this mutation in CD case from 416 independent families with a group of 287 controls. Characteristics of cases and controls were not well described. Re-analysis of the study using epidemiologic notations is summarized in the table . The data suggest a modest increased risk for heterozygotes (odds ratio OR of 1.5) and a markedly increased risk for homozygotes (OR 17.6). Hugot et al.

But it is unclear whether antibiotic use is a disease trigger or a result of patients seeking symptom relief.
By Victoria Stagg Elliott AMNews staff. March 1, 2004. Use of antibiotics is a potential risk factor for the development of Crohn's disease, according to a paper published in the February issue of the journal Gut Researchers at England's University of Nottingham and Cambridge University analyzed the British General Practice Research Database for information about antibiotic use of those with and without the disease. The database includes information about diagnosing and prescribing practices of 5% of the nation's physicians and is considered to be one of the world's largest computerized databases of longitudinal anonymous patient medical records from this setting. Tools Genetics of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Introduction The recent description of the first susceptibility gene for Crohn's disease has ushered in a new era of investigation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Identification of additional susceptibility genes and correlation of genetic alterations with clinical characteristics of disease surely will lead to finding the causes of, and hopefully the cure for, IBD. Nothing in this field can be more exciting for investigators, clinicians, and patients alike.
Evidence of a Genetic Component for IBD Genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of the inflammatory bowel diseases, including both ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Evidence includes epidemiological data demonstrating differences in IBD incidence among different races and ethnic backgrounds, familial aggregation, and high concordance for IBD type in monozygotic vs dizygotic twins. Incidence rates for IBD are highest among whites, and among individuals of Jewish background compared with other ethnic groups.

Distributor Loses Pain and Pounds With Relìv One day in July of 1999, two months after starting on Relìv Classic nutritional supplement and Relìv Innergize! sports drink, Master Affiliate Kevin Kramlich of Colfax, WA, had a revelation. "I suddenly realized that, since starting on Relìv, I hadn't had a single flare-up of Crohn's Disease (an inflammatory bowel disease)," Kevin recalls. "All the medications I'd taken in the past had made me feel worse instead of better, so I hadn't even considered that Relìv could help me with my disease," Kevin explains. "But to this day, I haven't had a single Crohn's flare-up." Inspired by his results, Kevin started on a weight-loss plan, adding Relìv Ultrim-Plus nutritional meal replacement and Relìv FibRestore to the basic nutrition. "I lost 25 pounds in two months," he says, "and I'm not through yet!" Recently, a life-threatening automobile accident left Kevin with a whole new set of health problems. "All my bones and muscles had been jarred, and I was in a lot of pain," he recalls. "But after taking Relìv Arthaffect nutritional supplement, I was able to work the entire next day." Spreading the word about Relìv throughout his community, Kevin has realized its business potential, as well. "Relìv is an opportunity for me to live debt-free and enjoy a comfortable retirement!"

    Crohn's disease
Crohn's Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the alimentary tract and it can involve any part of it - from the mouth to the anus. It typically affects the terminal ileum and well demarcated areas of large bowel with relatively normal bowel disease. It is often associated with auto-immune disorders outside the bowel, such as mouth ulcers and rheumatoid arthritis . Given the high incidence of irritable bowel syndrome among Americans, this can also be a complicating factor. Crohn's patients typically suffer from chronic diarrhea and disrupted digestion , making it difficult for sufferers in the acute phase of the disease to eat and/or digest food. The inflammation can be extremely painful and debilitating. Other common complications of Crohn's include fistulas of the colon hemorrhoids lipid , absorption problems, and anemia The disease typically first appears in a sufferer by age 30 or so, though it is not unknown for symptoms to first appear quite late in life. It quite commonly appears in childhood. Some estimates suggest that up to 1,000,000 Americans have the disease, suggesting that the prevalence of it is around 1 in 300. Some ethnic groups have significantly higher rates of prevalence than others. Increased rates of disease have also been noted in some families, leading to speculation of a possible
