Experiences
Recipes Who Runs All This? Links Welcome! I was first diagnosed with Crohn's Disease eight years ago and, being a teenager at the time, I found it difficult to talk to others about the disease that did not have it. I created this site as a place to share stories and information - for teens, by teens - with Crohn's Disease, Colitis, or IBS. Apparently I've made a big impact in my five years here. I'm glad to do what I can to make a difference.
On this page, I will post experiences we teens have had with the disease. Any advice you may wish to pass on to others is also welcome. Since most all of us follow special diets, there is a recipe section. I have tried many of the recipes listed here, and several have become my favorites. Try them and let me know what you think. Please keep in mind that all of our diets are different, so what works for someone else may not work for you.

My Life With Crohn's Disease
by Matt the Webmaster So, your interested in who I am and how I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. I was diagnosed on September 1, 1994. I was 13 at the time and had spent the summer in severe pain. My intestines had swollen shut and I was totally dehydrated when I went into the hospital. Before I was diagnosed, the doctors gave me Zantac for an "ulcer", and one doctor thought that I was starving myself! I would sleep a lot more than usual and I didn't want to do anything. The worst part was that nobody knew what was wrong with me. Did I have some new, unheard of disease? Not even TV would leave me alone; I'd click around the cable and be greeted with: "How can I be dying of a disease no one's ever heard of?" from a soap opera. How depressing! When I was diagnosed, I had the usual selection of tests done, like the oh so fun Upper GI! To this day barium makes me gag. What was worse was the next day the doctor started me on vanilla Ensure, which is just too much like barium. Days later, I was released from the hospital with a disease I'd never heard of in my life and a lactose-free diet. I was to take six Asacol per day.

Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
by Ronald Hoffman, M.D.
Conscious Choice, September 1995 Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are the two most severe digestive afflictions. They cause life impairing symptoms, necessitate long-term dependence on powerful drugs, and often result in debilitating surgery and even death. Tens of thousands of Americans are affected. Both diseases are classified under the medical rubric of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
The incidence of IBD has risen with the tide of civilization. Once thought of as a psychosomatic illness arising in individuals with "passive personalities with a tendency to suppress personal conflicts," the cause of IBD remains elusive. One theory holds that modern measles virus, improperly cleared from the body, results in low grade, chronic inflammation of the intestinal lymphoid tissue; other hypotheses posit a relationship to contemporary diet. Indeed intake of sugar and "junk food" has been correlated in many studies with susceptibility to both forms of IBD. Some researches have even suggested that the abrasive "polishers" found in modern toothpastes set up inflammatory reactions in the gut. A higher incidence of IBD has even been reported after tonsillectomy. Oral contraceptive users also have an increased risk.
The most common early symptoms of ulcerative colitis are constipation with passage of blood or mucus in the stools. The patient may have the urge to defecate with only a scanty bowel movement. Several months or years may pass before diarrhea develops with abdominal pain. The patient may then develop severe fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, fever and occasionally painful joints.

Welcome to my page on Crohn's Disease. My name is Annee and I was diagnosed with this disease on August 27, 1998. For those of you out there who don't really know what it is, here's the rundown for you. Crohn's Disease, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), is a disease of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It predominates in the lower part of the small intestine (ileum) and the large intestine (colon), but may occur in any section of the GI tract. Crohn's usually causes diarrhea, crampy abdominal pain, fever, and at times, rectal bleeding. Loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss may also occur. Symptoms may range from mild to severe, but people with the disease can live active and productive lives. Crohn's Disease is chronic and the cause is unknown. Medication currently available decreases inflammation and usually will control symptoms, but does not provide a cure. It has been estimated that as many as 2 million Americans have IBD. Males and females seem to be affected equally and while it affects people of all ages, most cases are diagnosed in young people in their teens and early twenties. © Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, Inc. Crohn's Disease By NIDDK WebMD Public Information from the National Institutes of Health Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child.

  • This is a disease involving inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. It can occur anywhere in the tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, or anus. Though the most commonly affected area is the ileum (part of the small intestine), other parts of the small intestine and the colon are also common. The inflammation affects the whole wall of the part of the tract involved (i.e., the full thickness of the ileum). Crohn's disease is thought to be an autoimmune illness, in which the body attacks itself, but this is not entirely certain.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease
What are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases? These are disorders where the bowel becomes red and inflamed. In ulcerative colitis the lining of the large bowel is involved. In Crohn's disease (named after an American physician) any part of the digestive tract can be affected and the full thickness of the bowel wall can become inflamed. Crohn's disease, when it affects the colon, and ulcerative colitis are similar so it is sometimes hard to tell which one a patient has. What is the cause of Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's Disease? The cause or causes are not known. It is possible that affected people have an abnormal defense mechanism against the bacteria which are normally present in the gut. A long-term reaction to a particular bacterium or virus may be important. People in some families are more susceptible than in others, but the chance of passing this tendency on to children is small. What are the symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis?

94. CHRYOUR HEALTH
Crohn s disease, Crohn s disease is a chronic condition that involves inflammation and damage of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/hlthconn/items/crohn.htm
Crohn's Disease Crohn's disease is a 'chronic' condition that involves inflammation and damage of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Chronic means that the disease returns over and over again with varying periods of remission (freedom from symptoms) between bouts of the disease. Crohn's disease can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract from its beginning (the mouth) to its end (the anus) - including the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. It most commonly affects the end of the small bowel, just before it connects to the large intestine. It can occur at any age, but most commonly affects teens and young adults. The cause of Crohn's disease is not clearly understood at the present time. Signs of Crohn's disease include:
  • abdominal pain - often crampy in nature
  • bloating and gas
  • diarrhea
  • nausea and vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • fever
  • blood in bowel movements
  • weight loss - resulting from poor appetite and poor absorption of food.
Diagnosis The diagnosis of Crohn's disease involves a complete medical evaluation. Testing may include stool samples, x-rays (with or without barium), examination of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract with a scope and, sometimes, a biopsy of tissue. Treatment Once the diagnosis of Crohn's disease has been made, treatment is directed at reducing inflammation, controlling symptoms and preventing complications such as bowel obstruction, malnutrition and the development of fistulas and abscesses. Anti-inflammatory medications such as steroids are often used in the treatment of Crohn's. Hospitalization may be required during serious flare-ups so that intravenous nutrition and medication can be given. Some people find that they can lessen their symptoms by eliminating those foods that seem to make symptoms worse. If, however, you find it difficult to eat a balanced diet because of food intolerances, it is recommended that you consult a registered dietitian to establish a meal plan that will provide you with all of the nutrients you need for health.
