(Synonyms: regional enteritis, ileitis, Granulomatous ileocolitis) Approximately one million Americans have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis , the most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease can present in a very similar manner and can be painful, causing chronic inflammation in the digestive tract and often spreading into the layers of the affected tissues. Crohn's disease typically affects the lower part of the small intestine (ileum) or the colon, but it can flare up anywhere in the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus. Mayo Clinic offers specialized techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases, such as Crohn's disease. Our team of gastroenterology physicians and medical professionals can help identify options if a patient is at a high risk or is experiencing symptoms that could be related to a digestive condition. Currently, there is no known cure for Crohn's disease. But researchers recently identified a gene that, when defective, can trigger the disease in some people. This discovery may lead to more effective treatments for Crohn's disease in the future.

What is Crohn's disease? Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) . These two diseases are very much alike. In Crohn's disease, inflammation can be found in the lining of the intestine. It can also involve the whole thickness of the bowel wall. Crohn's disease is usually in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum. However, it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from where food is taken in (the mouth) to where food comes out (the anus). Ulcerative colitis only affects the colon. The inflammation can cause pain. It can also make the colon empty often, which causes diarrhea. Some patients with Crohn's disease have long periods of remission (when symptoms disappear). This may last months or years. However, there is no way to tell when a remission will happen or when disease symptoms will return. There is no cure for Crohn's disease. About one million Americans have IBD, inflammatory bowel disease. People of all age groups can have Crohn's disease, but it usually begins in the late teens and early adulthood. Twenty percent of all Crohn's cases affect children.

WHAT IS CROHN'S DISEASE?
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disorder. Inflammatory means your body's reaction to this condition may cause pain, swelling, and/or redness in the intestine. Crohn's disease is also known as regional enteritis. This is a chronic (life-long) disease. The cause is not yet known but research is being done to look for a cure. We do have partially effective medical and surgical treatment. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract from the mouth to the anus, but it usually involves parts of the colon and small intestine. It creates patches of inflammation in the intestine spreading from one segment of bowel to another, but skipping some segments. When looked at with a fiberoptic scope, the colon segments appear like cobblestone due to ulcers and fissures (narrow slits) which form with the disease.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Irritable Bowel Syndrome can cause similar symptoms, but they arise from completely different pathologies. While the medical treatments for the two disorders are quite disimilar, many of the lifestyle strategies for minimizing pain and bowel dysfunction are identical (particularly dietary changes and the use of gut-soothing herbs such as fennel and peppermint). Irritable Bowel Syndrome is defined as a functional gut disorder and is not actually a disease at all.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a catchall phrase that encompasses a variety of conditions that are marked by inflammation and can occur anywhere from the lips to the anus. There are two main diseases that are commonly referred to as IBD, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
What is Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease was first written about in the United States by Burrill B. Crohn, Leon Ginzburg and Gordon Oppenheimer, a team of doctors in New York City who noticed that 14 patients shared the same characteristics of a disease pattern affecting the last part of the small intestine known as the terminal ileum.
Their paper on the topic was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1932. Later in the same year, the same doctors reported on 52 others who also shared some symptoms, specifically the formation of small lesions called granulomas that were found in the small intestine.

Crohn's Disease What is it? Symptoms Prevention and treatment Related links What is it? Crohn's disease is a long-term illness that causes inflammation in the gut. It can affect any part of the digestive system from the mouth to the anus. The parts most often affected are the ileum (last part of the small intestine) and the colon. Around 1 in 1500 people have Crohn's disease in the UK. Symptoms usually first appear between the ages of 15 and 30. In Europe and North America it most commonly affects Caucasians, particularly those of Jewish decent. What are the symptoms? The condition tends to get better and worse at different times. Symptoms occur when a part of the gut is inflamed. They may include:
  • diarrhoea abdominal pain fever weight loss generally feeling unwell
If the colon is affected then rectal bleeding or blood in the diarrhoea may occur.

Healthcare Services view print friendly page Health Topics Digestive Disorders Crohn's Disease Crohn's Disease Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) include a group of chronic disorders that cause inflammation or ulceration in the small and large intestines. Most often IBD is classified as:
  • ulcerative colitis - causes ulceration and inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Crohn's disease - an inflammation that extends into the deeper layers of the intestinal wall, and also may affect other parts of the digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease cause similar symptoms that often resemble other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome. The correct diagnosis may take some time. Inflammatory bowel disease may also be referred to as colitis, enteritis, ileitis, and proctitis.
What is Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that is a chronic condition that may recur at various times over a lifetime. It usually involves the small intestine, most often the lower part called the ileum. However, in some cases, both the small and large intestine are affected. Sometimes, inflammation may also affect the entire digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, appendix, or anus. Crohn's disease is also called ileitis or enteritis Crohn's disease affects males and females equally. It appears to run in some families, with about 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease having a blood relative with some form of inflammatory bowel disease.

If you have recently been told you have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, your first reaction may have been shock that you have an illness which could affect you for the rest of your life. You may also have felt some relief that at last you have an explanation for the way you are feeling. There are probably many questions running through your mind. We hope this information will help you to understand more about your condition, how you can help yourself, and the sort of treatment you will receive.
What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a term used to describe two diseases, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, which cause inflammation of the bowel.
Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation of the inner lining of the large bowel (colon and rectum). When only the rectum is involved it is sometimes called ulcerative proctitis or just proctitis. When the entire colon is involved it is sometimes called pancolitis.
Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the full thickness of the bowel wall and may involve any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus (back passage). Most frequently the ileum, which is the lower part of the small bowel (ileitis), the large bowel (colitis) or both (ileo-colitis) are involved.

Crohn's Disease What Is It?
Crohn's disease, also known as ileitis or enteritis, can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Usually, Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ, causing pain and sometimes making the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to ulcerative colitis , which causes inflammation and ulcers in the large intestine, or irritable bowel syndrome. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child. Causes
While many theories about what causes Crohn's disease exist, none have been proven. The most accepted theory is that the body's immune system reacts to a virus or a bacterium by causing ongoing inflammation in the intestine.

An Alternative View of Crohn’s Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease
People with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) often are resistant to alternative approaches to their disease. They have a life-threatening disease and conventional medicine and their conventional physicians may have saved their lives many times over. For this they are quite grateful to conventional medicine and doctors. They naturally may be afraid to try anything else that could be less effective even though they usually do not enjoy actual good health as the result of the treatment they take. I am not a doctor. My “educational” qualifications include college degrees in medical laboratory science and microbiology. My real qualification for writing this website article is that I am a person with Crohn’s disease who, unlike everyone else with IBD I know, takes no medication and is not always a few steps away from a medical crisis. The articles quoted in this section of the website were published in mainstream, respected, peer-reviewed medical journals. I hope that IBD patients and their doctors will put aside their fears and biases and consider the facts presented below with an open mind. In 1991, I was diagnosed as having Crohn's disease. The gastroenterologist who did the colonoscopy and made the diagnosis told me that there were no restrictions on my diet, that there were no dietary or lifestyle changes that I could make that would influence the course of the disease, and that if it went into remission, it would eventually recur. I was put on Flagyl

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) that affect the lining of the colon, rectum, and other parts of the digestive track. IBDs can vary widely in severity, and may be helped by diet, medications and/or surgery. Serious complications can occur. These websites provide valuable information for people with Crohn's or ulcerative colitis, their family members, and service providers.
This excellent website is packed with articles about different aspects of IBD (e.g., basic facts, complications, medical tests, medications, surgery), current research developments, an "Ask the Specialist" section, and a "Find-a-Doctor" directory. There are also news updates, links, chapter information, and much more. The site carries the authority of CCFA's medical experts, but visitors should be aware that it is sponsored by several pharmaceutical companies (see our page on Evaluating Disability Information on the Internet

Crohn's disease
The situation Crohn's disease ruins the lives of sufferers and represents one of the major unsolved problems of modern medicine. A chronic inflammation of the intestine, the disease's symptoms include chronic diarrhoea, daily abdominal pain, weight loss, extreme tiredness and psychological problems. It is believed that the disease severely affects up to 80,000 people in the UK. It is thought that there are 4,000 - 8,000 new cases every year. These figures are estimates and will remain estimates until the government makes the disease reportable (i.e. requires the collection of statistics upon diagnosis). MAP A leading medical researcher funded by Action Medical Research has claimed that a bug, which is present in retail pasteurised milk in the UK, causes Crohn's disease. The bug, an organism known as MAP (Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis), is not completely killed by normal milk pasteurisation methods. It can also be found in water.
