On this page: The digestive system. Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child.

What is Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines. It primarily causes ulcerations in the small and large intestines, but can affect the digestive system anywhere between the mouth and the anus. It is named after the physician who described the disease in a landmark paper written in 1932. It is also called Morbus Crohn's, Granulomatous enteritis, Regional enteritis, or Terminal ileitis. The disease is found in equal frequency in men and women, and usually affects young patients in their teens or early twenties. Once the disease begins, it tends to be a chronic, recurrent condition with periods of remission and disease exacerbation. The disease tends to be more common in relatives of patients with Crohn's disease.
What causes Crohn's Disease
The cause of Crohn's disease is unknown. Some scientists suspect that infection by certain bacteria, such as strains of mycobacterium, may be the cause of Crohn's disease. To date, there has been no convincing evidence that the disease is caused by infection. Crohn's disease is not contagious. Although diet may affect the symptoms in patients with Crohn's disease, it appears unlikely that diet is responsible for the onset of the disease.

Provides an introduction to this chronic disease including symptoms, possible causes and diagnosis.

About Crohn's Disease: Its Diagnosis And Treatment
Crohn's Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in which areas of the intestinal tract become inflamed causing sloughing and, in some instances, ulcers. While many other IBDs cause inflammation of the intestinal lining, Crohn's affects all layers of the intestine, not just the surface. The most common symptoms include diarrhea and intense stomach pain.
Although usually affecting the portion of the small intestine known as the ileum the condition is not limited solely to the small intestine and can affect any area of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Severity varies—only a small area of intestine is affected in some people, while others suffer from widespread intestinal inflammation. Many people receive a treatment that helps control flare-ups and allows you to enjoy life without interruptions.
Diagnosis: The Colonoscopy
Arriving at a diagnosis can be difficult, as so many of its symptoms, especially stomach pain, mimic other IBDs such as irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis. Stomach pain is a very common complaint and, unfortunately, this symptom may point to a variety of causes, making diagnosis a challenge. In order to firmly establish an accurate diagnosis, a colonoscopy may be preformed. A colonoscopy is a specialized form of endoscopy, a procedure in which a thin fiber optic tube with a tiny camera attached is inserted into the body to examine the digestive tract.
When endoscopy is used to diagnose Crohn's Disease, the endoscope is inserted through the rectum to examine the colon for areas of inflammation.

Clinical Trials Provide New Hope for Crohn's Disease Treatment
Symptoms of Crohn's disease vary from individual to individual. For some, symptoms are so mild that treatment isn't even necessary. For persons with severe Crohn's disease, however, treatment makes life bearable.
Because no cure is currently available for Crohn's disease, treatment focuses on improving quality of life, inducing and maintaining remission, and minimizing the negative side effects of treatment. Current methods of treatment are various combinations of anti-inflammatory drugs, medications to suppress the immune system, antibiotics, medications that directly address symptoms, nutritional supplements, and surgery.
The Value of Research
Thanks to continuing research and Crohn's disease clinical trials, new drugs are available that have proven more effective, while older drugs are being considered for new uses, and drugs used to treat other conditions are being evaluated for their application to Crohn's.
In addition to studying treatment methods, research on bowel disorders examines the causes of this condition. Recent study has confirmed that regions on certain chromosomes are associated with Crohn's, indicating that the disease has a genetic basis. Knowing that the disease is at least in part caused by genetics means that a cure may some day be available.

Crohns Disease and Living Probiotics welcomes you. This page is created to be an informative stepping-stone to an awareness that not only focuses on Crohns disease and living probiotics but also reveals helpful information regarding many common chronic diseases and illnesses that our population is battling daily.
What we believe is that modern medicine has had many wonderful breakthroughs in the treatment of acute illnesses, which have been successfully, termed as modern miracles. Millions of people are affected by these medical marvels with little understanding of side effects or long-term usage.
Chronic diseases such as Crohns Disease and others are on the up rise and no significant studies have shown a decrease in any future plateau. Pharmaceutical drugs are prescribed to treat the symptoms for those suffering from illnesses and chronic diseases such as Crohns Disease Ulcerative Colitis Acid Reflux Candida Yeast Infections ... Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) , and the list goes on. Treating the symptoms rather than treating the actual disease is causing a litany of side effects, many which may actually be exacerbating the illness itself. What is the result? More medications are prescribed to counteract the newly acquired symptoms from the original prescribed medication. To simplify the previous statement, placing a bandage over the original bandage.
Patients are becoming frustrated and turning to what is known as alternative modalities called nutraceuticals which are natural compounds with pharmacology properties. Nutraceuticals come in all types of forms such as probiotics, botanicals, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals. While these nutraceuticals may offer a safe and effective alternative, many times however, they are merely less effective drugs and equally capable of exerting pharmacological effects on the body's chemistry, and much like a drug, force the body to deal with the substance.

Introduction.
Since Crohn's disease was first recognised in the early part of the twentieth century, it has been theorised that the disease is caused by a bacterial infection, with the principal suspect being mycobacteria, and more specifically in recent times, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Recently, research is making advances in understanding this organism, and is indicating more and more that at least some cases of Crohn's disease, if not all, are caused by paratuberculosis infection. Most importantly, the majority of Crohn's patients treated with antibiotic treatment which has activity against Mycobacterium paratuberculosis go into clinical remission. This is important information for sufferers of Crohn's disease, because Mycobacterium paratuberculosis is endemic in foods derived from cattle in most areas of the western world. Mycobacterium paratuberculosis causes a chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease in cattle, and many other species, which is similar to Crohn's disease. In some countries, the percentage of cattle herds infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis is extemely high. In the United States, 40% of large dairy herds are infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis.

(I could have just said it's my site and I'll put what I want on it :) hehe) Here you will find a little about me and my battle with Crohn's, information about Crohn's, and links to sites that deal with Crohn's disease. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 1992 after about two years of stomach problems. The Crohn's was found by accident when they opened me up thinking that I was suffering from an appendicitis, unfortunately they found the disease. Crohn's Disease is a disease of the gastrointestinal tract (here is more general information about IDB ). I have had one surgery to resection the diseased area and have been hospitalized three times and spent many nights in the ER since June 2000 because of obstructions caused by the disease. It's November now, I've been out of the hospital for two weeks and I will start on TPN (Total Parental Nutrition, feed via vein) on Monday and have surgery within the next couple of months. I've put together these pages as a resource for other people who suffer from Crohn's (my fellow Crohnies). I woke up at about 4:00 p.m., thankful to be alive and then I reached for my tummy, no bag what a relief. I was surprisingly coherent from that point on, I barely slept. A few days later over the weekend an on-call surgeon came to see me and actually put me on clear liquids. I was surprised by this because you normally have to pass gas before you can have any food or drink and I hadn't done that yet. On Sunday he moved me to food I happily eat until Tuesday morning. The doctors were ready to release me.

About Diet

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory disorder that can involve any part of the digestive system. It can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms can be confused with other, more common disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome. In some cases it may be difficult to distinguish from ulcerative colitis , but fortunately the treatment for these disorders is similar.
Symptoms of Crohn's Disease
Symptoms of Crohn's disease range from normal bowel habits to urgency, cramping and watery or bloody diarrhea. Patients also may have abdominal pain resulting from bowel narrowing or obstruction. These symptoms may be accompanied by fatigue, fever and weight loss. In addition, patients may experience what are called extraintestinal manifestations. These consist of joint pain and swelling, back stiffness, mouth sores, eye pain or redness and skin rashes. They may disappear when the bowel disease is treated, or they may need to be treated separately.
