Crochet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The word crochet is derived from the Middle French word croc or croche, meaning hook. It describes the process of creating fabric from a length of cord, yarn, or thread with a hooked tool. The origin of the crochet technique is a subject of considerable controversy. The word is not to be confused with "crotchet", otherwise known as a quarter note Table of contents 1 Definition 2 Origins 3 Early history 4 Modern Practice ... edit
Definition
Crocheted fabric in the modern sense is begun by placing a loop on the hook, pulling another loop through the first loop, and so on to create a chain. The chain is either turned and worked in rows, or joined end-to-end and worked in rounds. Stitches are made by pulling one or more loops through each loop of the chain. This method distinguishes crochet from other methods of fabric-making as it is composed entirely of loops and is only secured when the free end of the strand is pulled through the final loop. edit
Origins
Some theorize that crochet evolved from traditional practices in Arabia, South America, or China, but there is no decisive evidence of the craft being performed before its popularity in Europe during the . Many find it likely that crochet was in fact used by early cultures but that a bent forefinger was used in place of a fashioned hook; therefore, there were no artifacts left behind to attest to the practice. These writers point to the "simplicity" of the technique and claim that it "must" have been early.

Crocheting in Gold, Part 2
an examination of applied technique
Review:
In our previous installment of the crochet series we learned about beginning the crochet structure, forming the cylinder of loops, crocheting with our needle, and adding new wires. As we continue practicing it should be getting easier to form each new loop to the same shape and size, and to keep the crochet chain uniform. By now, the activity itself might feel more comfortable and enjoyable, and splicing in the new lengths of wire should have become a familiar process. The speed and consistency of the work will continue to improve proportionately to the number of hours spent crocheting. As we see our beginning bundle of loops develop into a long section of crochet chain we will feel a definite sense of accomplishment. The Nature of Wire:
One of the inherent properties of small diameter metallic wire is the susceptibility for it to kink as it is handled. Whether in uncoiling the wire from the spool, or manipulating it as we work, one frustration which we might have experienced by this point is the tendency of the wire to kink. Often, you might find that you can observe the tail of the wire drawing into a loop before it becomes a kink, in which case it is usually easy enough to straighten out the loop and resume crocheting. As long as it hasn't actually become crimped or kinked, the wire can be smoothed out and you can proceed. If the wire seems to be kinking too frequently it might be necessary to work with slightly shorter sections of wire which will be easier to manipulate, and to work more slowly and carefully.

Crocheting in Gold, Part 1
an examination of applied technique
Introduction:
The technique of crochet we will be discussing in this series is a method of translating a textile application, usually associated with yarn, thread, or fabric, into a form being expressed in metal. The choice of material in this case is a small diameter round wire, and for this project, a crochet bracelet, we will be using 18kt gold wire. Crochet involves working interlocking loops of our material into a seamless chain by means of a needle. Although crochet work in the textile application generally implies manipulating the material with a crochet hook, for our crochet project in gold it will be accomplished utilizing a needle which is made specifically for this purpose. This crochet structure can be defined as a hollow circular spiraling construction, which is fabricated from a single wire. The single wire forms a continuous cylindrical chain, but due to the fabrication technique being applied, it will require many equal length sections of wire which are joined together within the interior of the chain. The joins, or splices, will not be visible once the chain is completed. Even though our single wire construction is comprised of many segments, if our work is well executed our final product will not have a segmented appearance. It will be smooth and supple, even in diameter, and possess surprising flexibility and strength in relation to the small diameter of the wire with which it is constructed. It is quite distinctive from other styles of chain, and it has an unequaled aesthetic and tactile quality.

96. Frequently Asked Questions About Crocheting & Knitting
A. You should never knot your yarn when knitting and crocheting because knotswill unravel or pop through to the front of your work and look terrible.
http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/questions.html
O n this page, the Council will share the answers to frequently asked questions and present helpful reference information, such as pattern abbreviations. If you have a question, please email us . Every month we will select a new question to research and answer. If you have questions about specific products, please contact the company directly. (See "Special Note" in About CYCA
Q. Do you have a sweater pattern for a child who wears size 16-18?
A. Currently, we do not have any children's patterns for size 16-18. Girl's size 16-18 is the equivalent of a woman's small size and we hope to have several sweater patterns on our web site this fall, which will appeal to all ages.
However, If you would like to knit or crochet a child's sweater like the "Duckling Sweater" featured in April, find a woman's crew neck pattern and use the chart from the Duckling Sweater. If this sounds like a good idea, but you are concerned that it will be too complicated, ask an experienced knitter where you buy your yarn or a friend who knits to help you.
