Croatia in war crimes crisis
Del Ponte says Croatia must now implement the arrest warrants ZAGREB, Croatia Croatia has been plunged into a political crisis following a Cabinet decision to allow the handover of citizens wanted for war crimes. Four ministers in the 23-member Cabinet offered their resignations in protest after the decision was announced by Prime Minister Ivica Racan. Racan said rejecting requests by the U.N. war crimes tribunal to extradite Croatian citizens "would return us into the abyss of the troubled Balkans, from which even Serbia" is escaping. He promised to ask parliament to give his government a vote of confidence "as soon as possible." It was unclear whether he could gather enough support there to maintain his administration. The four ministers who said they would resign are Deputy Prime Minister Goran Granic, Defence Minister Jozo Rados, Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic and Science and Technology Minister Hrvoje Kraljevic. U.N. chief war crimes prosecutor Carla del Ponte visited Croatia on Friday and for the first time to insist on the handover of two indicted war crime suspects to the U.N. tribunal. Belonging to a younger generation of Croatian painters, artist Marina Ancic presented her works on ten one-man exhibitions. Not focused on painting solely, which always engages combined technique, she creates works of art made of papier-mache and designs carpets, cups, greeting cards with the same enthusiasm and imagination. Her works reveal an unexpected world of phantasmagoric, zoomorphic and vegetal forms, associative world abundant with life and vivid colors. Glorifying life and expressing optimism, these are the imperatives of Marina Ancic's paintings.

About Croatia
The Republic of Croatia is a European country situated along the Adriatic Sea and its hinterland. It stretches from the slopes of the Alps and deep into the Pannonian Valley to the banks of the Danube and Drava rivers. Thus according to its natural characteristics, as well as its cultural and historical development, Croatia can be divided into three geographically distinct zones:
  • the Coastal region the Mountain region the Pannonian region
  • Like many countries in Western Europe, Croatia was founded on the ruins of the Roman Empire. When they arrived in the territory of present-day Croatia, the Croats were politicaly organized in principalities. In 925, Croatian King Tomislav united the principalities, establishing the first Croatian state. Later, Croatia retained its legal status and autonomy within the framework of the Hungarian empire, and the Habsburg Monarchy. Top

Its leaders soon conceived the idea of founding " a learned society whose airn would be to promote culture in the national language ". This was first suggested by Tomaš Mikloušic in the book Izbor dugovanj vsakoverstneh , in 1821 and then taken up and elaborated by Ljudevit Gaj, leader of the National Revival, in his weekly magazine Danica . In 1836 the Croatian Parliament ( Sabor ) immediately endorsed the idea, which it incorporated into a parliamentary conclusion in the same year.Since the conclusion was not confirmed by the Austrian emperor, Ferdinand I, the parliament repeated its proposal in 1843, 1845, and 1847. However, due to the Revolution of 1848, the restoration of absolutism in the ten years that followed, the abolition of the constitution, and the dissolution of the parliament, all further activities were postponed for 13 years.
