About Karlovac
Croatian History
With its sublime stretch of Adriatic coast, Croatia has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful parts of Europe. Despite the tragedy of war, its charms remain largely intact. Most of the tourist areas have been restored, but reminders of the country's painful history abound. The aura of medieval Croatia endures in the cobbled streets of Rovinj and the recently restored other-worldliness of Dubrovnik's Stari Grad. The country is also home to some of Europe's finest Roman ruins, including the immense palace of Diocletian in Split. Before 1991, Croatia (then part of Yugoslavia) was shaping up as the new Costa del Sol. Planeloads of Western Europeans - 10 million a year - were hitting the Adriatic shores in search of sun, cheap living, medieval quaintness and perhaps a spot of naturism. But with Croatia's push for independence during the violent break-up of Yugoslavia, war inevitably turned the tourism dream sour.

The first Scout units were established in late 1913 and 1914. The Scout Association of Croatia has been a co-founder of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922.
Scouting almost vanished as a result of World War I. The Scout Association of Croatia was kept alive by being members of the Scout Association of the Kingdom of Jugoslavia, which was dictated by the law at the time. Although Croatian Scouts have been dropped from the membership rolls of WOSM in 1951, the organization did not stop its work. When communism fell in 1989, Croatia declared itself an independent nation and received recognition by numerous western nations. The Scout Association of Croatia did likewise. According to the democratic changes in Croatia, The Scout Association of Croatia returned to its roots as voluntary non-political, educational organization for young people. It became fully prepared to meet their needs in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals. Their goals are to help the youth of Croatia become responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Varied activities in nature, challenges and adventures, contacts to different people and different cultures enable them to respect those differences as a precious heritage of mankind.

Dedicated to the memory of Gordan Lederer Dear reader,
When you meet a new friend or colleague, you are necessarily confronted with his cultural and historical background, peculiarities of his own, that are sometimes difficult to conceive. Having this in mind, we believe you will understand our wish to give you a better insight into what could be called a Croatian cultural heritage, at least in a rapid and sketchy way. The connections with other European cultures are, as you will see, deep and longstanding. We shall also try to intersperse this hypertext with some interesting facts by which Croatia is recognizable. In short, we start by describing an extremely complex and interesting entity, unique in Europe - the Republic of Croatia, or in Croatian - Republika Hrvatska HR

Twentieth century sculptor Ivan Mestrovic is the pride and joy of Croatia's art world. His work can be seen in town squares throughout the country, and he has also designed several imposing buildings, including the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb. Croatian literary figures include 16th century playwright Marin Drzic and 20th century novelist, playwright and poet Miroslav Krleza - the latter's multi-volume work, Banners , is a saga about Croatian life at the turn of the 20th century. Croatian folk music is a hotch-potch of styles. The kolo , a lively Slavic round dance, is accompanied by Roma-style violinists or players of the tambura , a Croatian mandolin. Dalmatia's gentle guitar and accordion bands have a distinctly Italian flavour. Croats are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, while virtually all Serbs are Eastern Orthodox. In addition to various doctrinal differences, Orthodox Christians venerate icons, let priests marry, and couldn't care less about the Pope. Thoroughly suppressed during Yugoslavia's communist period, Roman Catholicism is now making a comeback, with most churches strongly attended every Sunday. Muslims make up 1.1% of the population and Protestants 0.4%. There's a tiny Jewish population in Zagreb. Croatians love a bit of oil, and among the greasy delicacies you'll find here are

HISTORY The name Croatia is derived from that of a people called Croats ( Hrvat, Chrobatos Velika Hrvatska Chrisitianity flourished in Illyria, Dalmatia, and the other provinces before the coming of the Croats. At the time of migration the Croats were heathens; they did not accept Christianity until the seventh century, when they and the Serbs were baptized by priests of the Roman Church. The Croats promised the pope to live in peace with other nations and he, in turn, to help them in case an enemy invaded their territory. Pope John IV (640-42) sent the Abbot Martin to the Croatians, and St. Martin I commissioned John of Ravenna to evangelize this vigorous and adventurous nation. He created John Archbishop of Salona (Solin), a city of Roman culture, whence, owing to the invasion of the Croats, many moved to the neighbouring Spalato. Here John laboured also, and the imperial mausoleum in the palace of Diocletian was converted by the people into a Christian temple. Cyril and Methodius came in 863, devised a special alphabet (the Glagolitic for the translation of the Gospels and liturgical books into the Old Slavonic tongue), and spread

The coat of arms pictures the saint patron of the city, St. George killing the dragon. In background there is a silhuete of the Fort Nehaj, made in such way as to associate to the Croatian coat of arms. The coat of arms is encirceled in an ornament including floral and naval elements. The flag is a tricolour of colours derived from the coat of arms, according to the Centraleuropean tradition. Both coat of arms and the flag are aparently against the general rules set by the Ministry of Administration regarding the local symbols, but it may be that since those were adopted quite early (1993?) that they were allowed to stay. In any case, the legal status f those sybols in uncertain, but they are used nevertheless. Adopted: before 1995 (?).

    Croatia - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman From about the 10th century BC, the country that is now modern Croatia, along with modern Albania and Slovenia, was a part of Illyria. Illyrians lived in tribes and had self-governing communities with elders as their leaders. Illyrians were a coastal nation and had their own navy. They pirated Greek and Roman settlements and, finally, were conquered by Romans and became part of the Roman Empire called Illyricum.
Under the rule of the Roman Empire, Illyria became very prosperous, serving as a trading and transit link for Rome because of its convenient seaports and roads built by Romans. It also became a very important Roman province through which the culture of ancient Rome spread further to the "barbarian" peoples of what is now eastern and central Europe. In fact, some of Rome's greatest emperors came from Illyria, including Constantine the Great and Diocletian. It is interesting to note that most of these emperors were chosen by their own soldiers while in battlethe Roman Senate simply approved them later.
Split was the administrative center of Illyricum. It is now best known for the ruins of the Palace of Diocletianone of the largest and finest Roman ruins still standing. Along with its surrounding royal residences, churches, and fortifications, the palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site—a place protected by the international community as having a special universal value. In fact, many modern residents of Split still consider the palace to be the city's center and not just a museum. Despite ongoing archeological studies at the site, much of the palace's buildings are used even today. The cathedral and baptistry continue to be used, as do shops in the old Roman arcades.

The first time that it was officially proclaimed was in 1848 and under the influence of revolutionary movements in Europe, a simple tricolour was made. The flag was, of course, without any coat. However, it was used as local flag in a big empire, so it remained more or less internationally unknown, but it became one of the most important symbols of the Croatian people. Very often it can be seen on old postcards, most often together with Croatian coats (normally not on the flag, but from time to time as a part of the flag).
After the end of the World War Croatia proclaimed independence, and a tricolour became the state flag, again without coats. The collision with the Dutch flag didn't became, as a matter of fact, a problem, because the state was short living. After a short time, Croatia was united with Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the

From the history of Zagreb University and Faculty of Philosophy
The first course of studies in philosophy in Croatia were established at the Jesuit College in Zagreb.
On September 23, 1669, the Jesuit Academy in the Free Royal City of Zagreb was granted the status of a university by Leopold I, Emperor and King of Croatia and Hungary. The university henceforth became the Neoacademia Zagrabiensis, a public institution of higher education offering courses in theology and philosophy. The Royal Academy of Sciences (Regia Scientiarum Academia) was founded in 1776 by a decree issued by Queen and Empress Maria Theresia. The Academy had faculties of philosophy and theology as well as a law school. The Croatian Parliament constituted a legal basis to allow a future foundation of the University of Zagreb. A parliamentary article regulating the establishment of the University was signed by Emperor Franz Josef I upon his visit to Zagreb in 1869. The act received Royal Assent on January 5, 1814. The modern University of Zagreb was established on October 19, 1874. The University comprised the Law School, the Faculty of Theology, and the Faculty of Philosophy. At the time the Faculty of Philosophy consisted of the following departments: Philosophy, World History and National History, as well as Classical and Slavic Philologies. There were only 6 professors and 26 students.

History: Converted to Roman Catholicism in the seventh century, the Croats established an independent kingdom during the tenth century, while the Serbs opted for the Eastern Orthodoxy of the Byzantine Empire, culminating in the Great Schism of 1054. In 1089, so-called Inner Croatia came under the control of Hungary and then the Habsburg Empire, and remained so for eight centuries, while the larger part of Dalmatia was variously controlled by the Byzantines, Venice and Austria. In 1529, following the defeat of the Hungarians by the Ottoman Turks, the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires divided Hungary’s territories, thereby creating a militarised border in Croatia between the Islamic and Christian worlds, running roughly along the present border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Serbs settled in areas of Croatia known as Krajina (border lands), the source of much Croat-Serb conflict thereafter. By 1699, when the Ottoman Empire began its long decline, most of modern Croatia was under Habsburg control, except for the Venetian territories of Dalmatia, Istria and Dubrovnik, which finally came to Vienna in 1815, after a brief period of French control under Napoleon. In 1868, Croatia came under strong Hungarian influence, however, after the destruction of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War I, a new ‘Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes’ was created in 1918, later renamed ‘Yugoslavia’ in 1929.
