http://www.settlement.org/cp/english/croatia/work.html
T HE W ORLD OF W ORK D uring the years of the Yugoslav federation, Croatia enjoyed a fairly strong economy based on heavy industry, agriculture and tourism. With independence, Croatia lost its Yugoslavian market. Additionally, the country faces numerous economic problems arising from communist mismanagement and the infrastructural and social damages of war; unemployment has been high. Croatia is still in transition to a privatized, market-based economy, though it has made impressive recoveries since the end of its civil war. C roatia's geography and location offer excellent economic opportunities. Since the Middle Ages, Croatians have been engaged in livestock farming, agriculture, viticulture, shipbuilding, fishing, trade, sea trade and stonemasonry. Much of the land is arable, allowing the widespread production of fruit, grain, olive oil, sugar, wine, liquor and beer. The country's principle exports are wheat, corn, beets, sunflower seed, alfalfa, clover, olives, grapes, soy beans and potatoes. O ther natural resources are coal, bauxite, iron, and minerals such as calcium, asphalt, silica, mica, clays and salt, which is produced and exported from the Adriatic town of Ston. The Adriatic islands contain high-quality marble that supports the stonemasonry industry. Croatia's rich forests and abundant waters have supported the development of local and international trade, as well as the production of paper and furniture. Croatia also exports petroleum, machinery, transportation and electrical equipment, chemicals, fuels, textiles and food products. Since the end of the war, the tourism industry has been gradually reviving. Approximately one-third of the workforce is employed in industry, while a greater number work in services.

This is an area of ancient Poljica, where the Poljica Principality lasted for centuries.
The village lies in the western part of the middle Poljica, and, according to The Statute of Poljica, it is one of twelve main Poljica villages - so called katuni . Sitno is bordering these villages: - in the north Dugopolje, Kotlenice i Dolac Donji
    - in the east Dubrava i Tugare
    - in the south Srinjine
    - in the west Zrnovnica. According to the last census (1991), Sitno Donje had 300 inhabitants, while Sitno Gornje had 297 inhabitants. The Poljica Principality extends southeastwards of Split, around the Mosor Mountain, which extends across Poljica like a 27 kilometer-long spine ( map of Mosor ). The highest peak in the west is Veliki Kabal (Ljuti kamen-1339 m), and in the east it is Sv. Jure (Kozik-1319 m). Near the Poljica coast two mountain branches extend, Sridivica or Markovaca (from the Zrnovnica river to village Srinjine, with altitude of 433 m), and Vrsina (from the Zrnovnica river to the town Omis, with a length of 17 km, and a height up to 584 m).

World Facts Index In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UN supervision, the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998.

Twenty-Five Lectures on Modern Balkan History
Lecture 1: Geography and ethnic geography of the Balkans to 1500
Preface Complete list of lectures Next lecture One can't understand the Balkans without understanding its ethnic groups, and one can't understand the ethnic groups and their history without knowing the influence of the region's geography.
Even the geographic extent of the "Balkan" region is a matter of controversy. Many scholars, especially those writing in the Cold War era, have included only the Communist states and linked them with Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany, while omitting Greece and ignoring Turkey and the Ottoman era. Other historians exclude Hungary, Croatia and other Habsburg lands, because of their "central" European character, supposedly contrary to Balkan themes. But the presence of contradictory themes is itself characteristically Balkan.
For the purposes of this course of lectures, the Balkan area includes Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Hungary. Most of this area was once under Ottoman Turkish rule; the rest under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The lectures will not deal with all of the Ottoman Empire, which extended into Asia and Africa, or other former Habsburg lands such as Czechoslovakia and parts of Poland.
    Physical geography
Balkan geography revolves around three features: the area's situation as a peninsula, its mountains, and its rivers.

Main article: History of Croatia The Croats are believed to be a Slavic people who migrated from areas of what is today's Galicia and settled in present-day Croatia during the 7th century . After a period of self-rule, in 1102 Croatians agreed to submit themselves to Hungarian authority. By the mid-1400s, the Hungarian kingdom was gravely impacted by the Ottoman expansion which led the Croatian Parliament to invite the Habsburgs , under Ferdinand I , to assume control over Croatia. Habsburg rule eventually proved successful in thwarting the Ottomans, and by the 18th century, much of Croatia was free of Turkish control, while Dalmatia was under Venice In 1868, Croatia gained domestic autonomy while remaining under Hungarian authority.
