Croatia
is a country with exceptional natural beauty, a rich culture and tradition as well as ecological preserved regions. The northern part has continental climate, in the mountains it is alpine and the Adriatic region has Mediterranean climate. The coastal scenery with the steel blue water and the subtropical vegetation against the background of the mountain chains presents a breath-taking panorama. Did you know, that there are 1185 offshore islands? One of the most impressing and beautiful mediaeval towns I've ever seen is Dubrovnik - just follow me to the next page...

Cultural Monument Flag
There is a flag used extensivly during the agression on Croatia in 1991-92, and later. It is a white flag with a blue device with an inscription 'SPOMENIK KULTURE' underneath in two rows. The symbol is the UNESCO symbol of protected monuments of culture. The flag was hoisted from all the buildings that were protected by UNESCO as a cultural and natural wealth of mankind, though it didn't help much. Many of the buildings hanging the flag were totaly destroyed, but that is another story.
Most notably, the flag was flown ower Dubrovnik that is protected as a whole town. It has been flying also over many churches, museums etc.
I have been walking today in the old city of Zagreb, and I saw that many museums still fly it.

Opatija Culture Opatija is the pearl of Kvarner Bay. The Opatija Riviera is a unique combination of climatic, vegetative and cultural opposites. The average temperature in Opatija is some degrees higher then in neighbouring places, that is the reason why camellias, magnolias, palms, bamboos, and other subtropical plants can grow in its parks. The central Opatija park for example is a horticultural monument covering an area of 3.64 hectares. About 159 plant species grow here. A great number of them originates from distant parts of the world and is not typical of this region. In this park you can find the Japanese camelia (Camellia japonica), which in time has become the distinctive symbol of Opatija. Hidden in this luxuriant evergreen vegetation there are many historical and recessional buildings. In numerous restaurants along the Riviera you can taste the European national dishes as well as Oriental dishes. Beside cafes and coffeehouses there are many facilities for young people as well, like dancing terraces, nightclubs. The Casino, several concerts, operas, folk shows, theatre performances and exhibitions are an interesting entertainment for all generations. But also if you like sports you will have a lot of fun staying in Opatija. You can choose between tennis, sailing, swimming, horse riding, or even skiing at wintertime in the nearby mountains. There are several attractions you should visit in the surrounding area of Opatija, like the picturesque Volosko, the traditional fishing villages Icici and Ika. The old town of Lovran is also worth a look, as well as the long sandy beaches of Medveja. You also have the possibility to make a boat excursion to Venice.

http://www.teenink.com/Past/9900/May/Travel/Welcome.html
P icture a small city with cobblestoned streets lined with relics and memories of a city that has been part of three countries during the last century.
Despite a violent past, Rijeka, Croatia remains a wondrous city. Every Saturday the marketplace is filled with people buying fruits, vegetables and fish pulled from the water only hours before.
Shops close at noon for dinner. The restaurants are packed and the main streets linking Rijeka with its suburbs are packed with families on their way home for the biggest and most important meal of the day. Business resumes at two o'clock and the Korzo (main street) is filled with locals buying goods for Sunday.
The best times to visit Rijeka are in February and during summer. The Carnival, in February, is a great international experience. Performances include choirs, dances and plays from almost every country in Europe.
Summer is another great time to visit. The warm weather mixes perfectly with the crystal waters of the Adriatic Sea and the days are great for water sports, walks or a snack in one of the many cafes lining the streets.
Rijeka is a great place to visit and a sensational cultural experience.

Teaching and learning Croatian About this collection This work is a collection of websites related to teaching and learning Croatian as well as giving an overview of Croatian culture and civilisation. Due to the fact that Croatian is the native language of only 4 000 000 people and is spoken only in Croatia and some parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is only a limited number of websites related to the teaching and learning Croatian. However, many interesting and useful sites have been singled out and put together to form a transparent overview of Croatian language, culture and civilization. This collection has been divided in two main parts, based on the kind of information they provide.
The first part "General Information about Croatia" contains a list of commented websites about geographical facts, history, culture, media, political structure and government in Croatia. It also gives an overview of Croatian search engines and Internet providers.
The second part comprises various websites that provide information on teaching and learning the Croatian language. Firstly there is some general information about the language followed by links on subjects such as "Ministry of Education", "Institutions promoting the Croatian language", collections of websites about Croatian, online dictionaries and grammars, exercises, tests and more.

The first library catalogue dates back to 1610. On September 23rd 1669, the Roman emperor and Hungaro-Croatian king Leopold I issued the university status diploma and privileges to the Jesuit Academy situated in a free royal town of Zagreb. At that time the library collection comprised 5,179 books. Medieval library was stocked almost entirely by donations. The Croatian spirit is felt in the cultural legacy not created by individuals, rather by the unknown, through the centuries carrying their creativity or skill
http://www.hgk.hr/cro_partner/spirit/tekstovi/culture/introducion.html
THE SPIRIT OF CROATIA If you wanted to acquaint yourself with the spirit of a nation and its people, you would have to leaf through thousands of pages of history books, art anthologies and sports almanacs; travel thousands of miles, absorbing the sights, sounds and smells of the land; come face to face with its people; listen to the language and folk music; observe the customs, costumes, embroidery and cultural heritage; and even then you might only have learned a small part. In order to be of assistance, we offer some hints at what we feel makes up the spirit of Croatia. We hope that these arouse your interest and encourage you to learn more. CULTURE, SCIENCE AND ART The mention of Croatia to most Europeans in the past five years, unfortunately, brings to mind only war, destruction and suffering. To us Croats it has always meant much more: our homeland, 1200 years of Christianity, culture, spirit, invention and western European civilisation. In a letter from Pope John VIII to Prince Branimir, dated June 7th of 879 AD, Croatia is mentioned as an independent, sovereign nation.
