Twentieth century sculptor Ivan Mestrovic is the pride and joy of Croatia's art world. His work can be seen in town squares throughout the country, and he has also designed several imposing buildings, including the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb. Croatian literary figures include 16th century playwright Marin Drzic and 20th century novelist, playwright and poet Miroslav Krleza - the latter's multi-volume work, Banners, is a saga about Croatian life at the turn of the 20th century.
Croatian folk music is a hotch-potch of styles. The kolo, a lively Slavic round dance, is accompanied by Roma-style violinists or players of the tambura, a Croatian mandolin. Dalmatia's gentle guitar and accordion bands have a distinctly Italian flavor.
Croats are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, while virtually all Serbs are Eastern Orthodox. In addition to various doctrinal differences, Orthodox Christians venerate icons, let priests marry, and couldn't care less about the Pope. Thoroughly suppressed during Yugoslavia's communist period, Roman Catholicism is now making a comeback, with most churches strongly attended every Sunday. Muslims make up 1.1% of the population and Protestants 0.4%. There's a tiny Jewish population in Zagreb.
Croatians love a bit of oil, and among the greasy delicacies you'll find here are burek, a layered pie made with meat or cheese, and piroska, a cheese donut from the Zagreb region. The Adriatic coast excels in seafood: regional dishes include scampi, prstaci (shellfish), and Dalmatian brodet (mixed fish stewed with rice). Inland look for specialties such as manistra od bobica (beans and fresh maize soup) or struki (baked cheese dumpling).

History
Main article: History of Croatia Croats are a Slavic people probably with origins in ancient Persia , who migrated from areas of what is today's Galicia and settled in present-day Croatia during the 7th century . It became one of the most powerful kingdoms in the region. In the Croatians ended a civil war by agreeing to submit themselves to Hungarian authority. By the mid-1400s, the Hungarian kingdom was gravely impacted by the Ottoman expansion which led the Croatian Parliament to invite the Habsburgs , under Ferdinand I , to assume control over Croatia. Habsburg rule eventually did prove to be successful in thwarting the Ottomans, and by the 18th century, much of Croatia was free of Turkish control, while Dalmatia was under Venice In , Croatia gained domestic autonomy while remaining under Hungarian authority. continue to develop programs targeted at the most urgent needs in the Croatian society, operating in the fields of education, media and culture, law, economy
http://www.soros.hr/front/index.php
Open Society Institute - Croatia is a non-profit private foundation, a part of the OSI Network , established and financed by American philanthropist George Soros
Open Society Institute-Croatia was established in 1992. in order to assist the democratic development of Croatian society. After the initial stage during which the Foundation provided substantial humanitarian help for the country in war, OSI-C entered the period in which it sponsored number of initiatives in the fields of civil society, education, media, arts and culture, public health, law and economy, with the total amount of more than 40 million USD . Without a doubt, influence of Karmen Bašiæ , a late director of OSI-C recognizably shaped the early years of the institute.
During the 90-es, OSI-C operated in a hostile environment, and vast majority of activities have been targeted on generating and supporting social processes that challenged the dominant political and social models, providing clear critical alternatives to the autoritarian and nationalist values and practises. The result of these efforts were numerous pockets of resistance that, in spite of the dominant political climate, managed to keep alive certain degree of social sanity that proved to be of decisive importance for a political shift started with the Parliamentary elections in 2000.
Due to these political changes, OSI-C has had, for the first time in its history, opportunity to significantly increase its impact on the Croatian society. The "guerilla" stage of operations has finished, and the new strategy was shaped in order to respond adequatly to the new environment and new challenges.
