  • The Critique ø having summarized the state of the research to date in the literature review segment, you are now ready to critique the article that you have chosen. Begin with a brief Summary (1 paragraph) describing the project. This summary should include
  • What was done (method) To whom was it done (subjects) What was the hypothesis (Why was it done? What were the expected results)? What was found (Actual results) What conclusions were drawn (What do the authors say the results mean).

As with the learning of any skill, getting feedback on your writing is ... well, "critical," and the Workshop is designed with this in mind. Our critique services make it easy to get personalized feedback quickly, while the writing is still fresh in your mind . Most importantly, your work is analyzed by Tom and his staff writers, all of whom have studied with him for years. So the evaluation and suggestions are geared to the principles taught in the Workshop Series curriculum . And in case you're the sensitive type (as writers often are), don't worry! Here at the Workshop we focus on the constructive part of the term "constructive criticism."
There are two types of critique service available:
    • critiques of exercises assigned in the course modules on CD-ROM, and
    • critiques of your own essays, short stories, novellas, etc.
In either case, you receive an email document that includes clear, concise and constructive notes. The critiques are designed to highlight the things you're doing well, while giving you pragmatic suggestions for sharpening your skills where there's room for improvement. Take a look at the critique sample to see how this process can turn a rough short story into a polished, publishable piece.

  • Do some background research on the artist Get an expanded picture of their historical context, their personal history, their philosophy and an idea of what makes them unique or significant as an artist in modern dance. This will help you to frame your experience and give you a larger context for understanding. Be cogent . You only have 4 pages, use them as efficiently as possible. A brief ? page intro paragraph to establish your "thesis" should be sufficient. Save the majority of your page space for the body of your analysis. Narrow your thesis . Do not write a summary of every dance in the concert. Limit your writing to only the most important material. After seeing the concert, you may find that one or two works, or something about the style of the choreographer in general is most interesting, evocative, provocative, intriguing, etc.—this is where you should center your writing. What interested you most? What made you feel the most? What made you most want to get up and move? These sorts of places will make the assignment more interesting for you to write, and more interesting for me to read. What to look for . While you watch the concert, it may be helpful to be aware of several possible issues on which you might focus your paper.

THE ART OF WRITING SHORT FICTION CRITIQUES By Julien Ryner The Value of a Critique As long as writers seek to narrow the discrepancy between what we want to say and what we actually say (as told to us by readers), we will always need a fresh pair of eyes for viewing our stories in process. Even experienced writers lose the long-view of a story when knee-deep in the text. An insightful critique can show us where and how we've missed the mark or how we can more accurately find the mark we initially intended to hit. Warning to Critiquers Even with their differences, all stories have elements in common that can be discussed, such as plot, characters, beginnings and endings, description, dialogue, and theme. But as we check off the effectiveness of these elements of storytelling, always in the forefront of my mind is the question, effective in whose terms? Surely not my terms but, rather, in terms of what the writer is trying to do. To critique stories, you must be willing to suspend judgment and enter the world the writer is attempting to create. You must be able to appreciate a wide variety of stories, even if you feel called to write a particular type. First Reading This is the reading that reveals whether the story works or not, whether it is all there and if there is balance to all of the story's elements. Whether or not a main character changes during the course of the story, can be best evaluated on this first pass.

Secondary Characters (Well-developed?) Structure (Does the story move at an effective pace, flow smoothly from narrative to dialogue?) Dialogue (Natural? Interesting?) Setting (Does the reader experience the time, place, and mood? Does the setting enhance the story or intrude?) Plot (Is it unique? Is the story line consistent?) Originality Style Conflict (Is the story free from predictability?) Mechanics (Neat? Proper manuscript format? Free from grammar, spelling errors?).

Are Critique Groups Right For You?
    by
    Su Wright
You've been writing in solitary confinement for months now, afraid to show anyone what you've written. Will it be good enough? Will it be rejected? One way to find out if your writing is acceptable before taking the plunge and sending it to editors involves critique groups. Most writers eventually join critique groups. Some writers move from one group to another until they find the group that suits them.
How to find your group. Find a group that will criticize your work, not tear it to shreds. Avoid groups that love every word you write. You want a group that will complement your writing when it's good, but still find ways to make your writing better. Find a group with a mixture of writing skills. While a group of all beginners can be helpful, it would be better if there were some more skilled writers in the group, too. A group with all full-time, professional, published writers may not want to take in beginners. So, find out the skill level of a group before you attend. Decide what mix you're comfortable with and seek that group. Find a group with similar writing interests or genres to yours. A science fiction writer may have a hard time getting valuable criticism from a group of romance writers and vice versa. Some fiction genres may work together, like romance and mystery, especially since there are many writers doing romantic suspense. But if you are writing magazine articles, you probably wouldn't get help from a group of writers doing only fiction. Many writers write lots of different things, and you may find a group with writers like that. Before you attend that first meeting, find out what the others are writing and decide if you will fit in.

    118. Form Vs. Function
Remember, Write for your audience. In a critique this means, without any exception I can think of, that you need to phrase your critiques delicately, tactfully
    http://www.critters.org/whathow.html
    Critiquing the Wild Writer:
It's Not What You Say, But How You Say It
(or "Just Honest, not Brutally Honest")
by Andrew Burt The Internet has been wonderful for us writers, among other things, opening the floodgate so we can participate in on-line critique groups and get feedback from authors worldwide. And sometimes there are other reasons why it's a good thing they live in Antarctica, such as when they shred your novel and you want to take a swing at them with your aluminum bat… The underlying problem is rarely that the "attacker" said something vacuous or even incorrect. As judge and jury, I try to view what they say in a neutral way, allowing great latitude for freedom of speech. I almost always find that the critiquer had some valid points. Well, it's their opinion so it's valid by default; but you know what I mean. There's a kernel of truth in what they say. The problem is How They Say It. When I point out what's going on, the reviewer invariable defends what they said. "But it's true that..." And perhaps it is. The problem is in how they phrased it. It's the old Form vs. Function dichotomy. The content may be fine, it's the presentation that's lacking.
