  • PRECIS
A short precis or review of the critical issues and main argument addressed in the article. This should include an examination of the structure, meaning and value of the work:

    Hardcore Critique Guidelines
    by Amy Sterling Casil
When we criticise work, we are commenting for the purposes of publishability, and our goal is to help authors to become publishable and published writers. For prose pieces, the following issues are critically important:
  • Plot - does the action make sense? Is what is written moving the story forward? Sometimes, the pieces are too short or are fragments, so a complete plot analysis isn't possible. Most pieces can be judged within the first few sentences for effective plot beginnings, however. That's what editors do.
  • Does the story start at the right place (the beginning?) Most stories by beginning writers start far too early - way before the key action takes place. Some, however, may start too far forward. These writers have taken the advice of "start with the action at full steam" too literally.
  • Is the pacing appropriate to the story? Too fast? Too slow? Just right?
  • Is the plot a real plot (a character, in context, with a problem)? Are things happening which seem to have no discernable reason or purpose?
  • The ending: is the payoff adequate to the buildup? Does the ending make sense? Is it satisfying? Does it arise from character and situation or is it "deus ex machina," where the Cavalry suddenly comes riding in over the hill to save the hero and heroine? Most importantly: were the seeds of the ending sown in the beginning?

Coby Derek James of New York has two books being published back-to-back! Wine, Dine and Death Down Under has just been released by Llumina Press. It is the first in a series of multicultural spy thrillers featuring hero Chet Lake. His second book, Mugged in Marseilles has already been picked up by Action Tales and is ready for release in the next few weeks. Check out more about his books by clicking here. Dan Kalla of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, who has just been offered a two-book deal by Tor/Forge (a subsidiary of St. Martin's Press). His first book, Beyond Therapy, was a medical thriller which had originally been set in Vancouver. When his agent asked for it to be set in Seattle instead, we were pleased to work with Dan to make this geographic change realistically suit his plot. It worked! Now Dan is finishing his second book for the publisher, this one an international medical thriller.
Artsun Akopian of Russia, who announced, "In 2003, I have 'delivered' a multimedia training course for translators who use special software, which took me 9 months. It will be published by Multimedia Technologies and Distant Learning." Now Artsun is back to his first love in writingas he starts up again on his international romantic/intrigue novel!

Do I Recommend that New Writers Join Writing Groups?
D epends. There are lots of reasons people want to be in a writing group. Some people want a friendly, supportive atmosphere which will help them build the self-confidence to continue writing or to try getting published. A writing group can help with this. Some people need for someone else to set their deadlines, so that they can complete projects they would otherwise put off or abandon. Writing groups can be structured to do this. Some people want a test group of readers on which to try out their stories. A writing group certainly provides this. However, some people want professional-level critique and editing to help them prepare a manuscript for publishing. I have not personally seen or read about any writing groups which offer this service to their members. In general, when people ask me about joining a writing group, my response is to say, join a university or college. Take more writing classes, take literature courses, take journalism. Put in a couple of years studying psychology and economics, philosophy, religion, and history. Read other authors for style and traits you would like to emulate and for those habits or aspects you would like to avoid. Studying writing methods and tools and then attempting to recreate or use them in your own stories has always seemed much more useful to me than trying to write for a particular group of people.
