Early Crisis Intervention Can Save High-Risk Adolescents from Suicide
Concerned parents should seek professional advice immediately, if they observe predictive signs
E-mail Story
Print Story SPECIAL EMBARGO FOR RELEASE: 10 a.m. (ET) Thursday, April 24, 2003 Media Advisory: "Regardless of the circumstances, it is important that parents maintain open communication with their teenager and seek professional advice if they are concerned. Crisis intervention with the help of a mental health professional is crucial for saving potentially suicidal teenagers," says Cynthia Pfeffer, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where she is director of the childhood bereavement program. Children who are vulnerable to anxiety and stress also bear watching during this stressful time for our country. "The war in Iraq is certainly stirring up a tremendous amount of uncertainty and anxiety and may be negatively impacting people who are especially vulnerable to these feeling," says Dr. Pfeffer. Adolescence in itself is a high-risk period. Suicide rates jump when children enter adolescence at age 15. Adolescents who display any of the following red-flag traits may be candidates for suicide risk assessment: preoccupied with suicide, depressed or withdrawn, uninterested in usual activities, angry and aggressive, involved with drugs and alcohol or failing in school. "If a teenager displays any suicide predictive behaviors, help should be sought immediately," Dr. Pfeffer states.

Crisis Intervention
With CFIDS it is redundant to argue about which comes first: assault to the human organism or psychological response to trauma. Mind, body, neurochemistry and the human spirit are inextricable.
It must be stressed that an individual in crisis, including the trauma of catastrophic illness, may mimic the characteristics of a variety of psychiatric disorders. Once past the crisis phase, especially where basic survival issues are concerned, many "psychological" concerns will dissipate. When a person with CFIDS (PWC) seeks psychological assistance, she or he must be assessed for potential crisis intervention. Specific issues include: 1) the collapse of a personal denial system which, heretofore, would not accommodate the illness; 2) inaccurate assessment and inappropriate treatment by physicians (may include patronizing or overt emotional abuse); 3) lack of emotional support from family, friends and persons in the workplace; and 4) legitimate fears regarding career, financial depletion and possible loss of health insurance.
The mental health professional must be educated to appreciate the devastation that this illness wreaks. Much of the panic, anxiety and depression are consequent to multiple personal losses and the unreliability of physical and mental capacities.
