CRISIS INTERVENTION
FIRST start with the young people. Include them in the planning. They need to be involved. Too often we plan for them and without them. The young people know the reason why other young people are taking their lives ASK THEM! They don't go to parents and authority figures when they are hurting. They go to each other and to good listeners. Remember this when you are doing suicide prevention and crisis intervention.

33. Healing Of Nations.org Deals With Native American Suicide Prevention And Crisis
suicide among Native American youth through the development of culturally relevant models for suicide prevention and communitybased crisis intervention teams.
http://www.healingofnations.org/cr2.html
CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM
In times of crisis, there must be a means of responding to the crisis, to mobilize the community, and to intervene.
Reservation communities are usually dependent upon the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to provide support in terms of crisis. This is not their mission, and they are unequipped in terms of personnel, or money, to provide these services. While IHS does have mental health services, these are usually limited to treatment and counselingonce the person enters the health care system. IHS does not normally provide prevention or outreach services. Until recently, IHS maintained a Special Initiatives Team that would be on call to go to Tribes in crisis. This team has been effectively dismantled. At this moment, IHS does not offer any services that are focused on suicide prevention or intervention. The BIA does not offer these services either. It is able to hold high risk youth in protective custody through law enforcement authorities, however, BIA does not hold itself out to provide "health" services.
Too often, a community is not prepared and must organize a Crisis Intervention Team (CRIT) under duress. In many cases, the cost may be lives lost. Suicides create particularly high risk situations, because they are so volatile. There is a "clustering" or "copy cat" phenomenon that describes multiple suicides which may be triggered by an attempt or successful suicide. Therein lies the dilemna and danger of not being prepared.

National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy
Crisis intervention and primary care activities Crisis intervention and primary care programmes provide direct care to young people at high risk of suicide aimed at averting or ameliorating a suicide crisis The Department is supporting a major programme to increase the accessibility and expertise of telephone counselling services available to young people through the provision of $3 million each to Lifeline and Kids Help Line from the National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy. This will lead to a major improvement in the reach, expertise, networking and evaluation of these telephone counselling programmes. Through the National Mental Health Strategy the Department is supporting State and Territory Governments to develop a wider range of mental health services and crisis services available to children and young adults. For example, National Mental Health Strategy funding is being used to trial a screening programme which provides early assessment and referral of school students at risk for suicide or mental health disorder. The Department also has major responsibility for primary care systems in Australia through its support for General Practitioners, who are often the first service providers consulted by young people considering suicide. The National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy includes a major national project to assist general practitioners in developing their skills to prevent and respond to suicide.

If You Are Suicidal
If you are suicidal and in immediate crisis please phone the emergency service for your country (dial 911 in the US or 999 in the UK) and ask for help. Then tell someone you trust not to leave you alone!
Why Do I Feel Suicidal?
Sometimes in our lives, things get so bad or feel so bad, that we can not endure a single second more. It is at these times that we get clouded and our thinking becomes clouded and we see death as the only real alternative we have to resolve our problems.
Suicidal feelings can be caused by our body chemistry which can happen on its own or can be triggered by something we experience, see, hear, or smell. Sometimes the cause is not very clear and we think that we have lost our mind, that we are crazy. It can be accompanied by other feelings of anxiety, paranoia, stress, or physical feelings such as excessive sweating, pain, etc.
