Law and Criminal Justice
Faculties of Rutgers' School of Law-Newark and the School of Criminal Justice have collaborated in the development of a J.D./M.A. (criminal justice) degree program.
In the past decade, virtually every aspect of the criminal justice system has come under intense legal scrutiny. Similarly, many legal norms in the system have been subjected to extensive empirical research. There is, consequently, a growing need to prepare teachers, research workers, administrators, and criminal justice leaders with skills that enable them to combine both methodological and broad criminological expertise with legal education.
Program Requirements.
Normally, it takes four-and-a-half years to obtain both the M.A. and the J.D. degrees. This program allows the candidate to finish the process in four years. Each candidate must successfully complete:
  • All first-year required law subjects and five seminars required by the School of Criminal Justice (statistics, research methods, criminal justice system, foundations of scholarship, and criminology);
  • A minimum of 16 additional credits from a list of law school courses dealing with issues of criminal justice and institutionalization;

    Ask the Experts:
    Career Options for Criminal Justice Majors
    Question:
    I will graduate in two years with a criminal justice degree but I am not interested in becoming a police officer or a lawyer. I am interested in police investigations and finding out why people commit crimes and how they commit crimes. Any suggestions for a career field? First Answer: What do you want to do with the information you hope to learn about police investigations and the motivation and methodology of those who commit crimes? Are you interested in working with the police? With offenders? In the community? Do you want to work with ideas on this topic, or people affected? I have at least two graduate students with undergraduate degrees in criminal justice studying social policy at the graduate school where I direct Career Services. Depending on your area of interest, and on your interest in pursuing a graduate degree, you could consider careers such as these:
    • Policy analyst for a legislator or politician addressing crime prevention or rehabilitation Program evaluation for an organization delivering services intended to prevent or reduce crime, or rehabilitate felons into the community.

    Criminology
    Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Criminology is a sub-field of sociology Sociology studies the social rules and processes that bind, and separate, people not only as individuals, but as members of associations, groups, and institutions. A typical textbook definition of sociology calls it the study of the social lives of humans, groups and societies. Sociology is interested in our behavior as social beings; thus the sociological field of interest ranges from the analysis of short contacts between anonymous individuals on the street to the study of global social processes.
    Click the link for more information. dealing with matters related to crime A crime is an act which violates a law of a government, nation-state, or jurisdiction, for which there is no successful defense. According to Western jurisprudence, there must be a simultaneous concurrence of both actus reus ("bad action") and mens rea ("bad mind") for a crime to have been committed; except in crimes of strict liability. In order for prosecution, some laws require proof of causality, relating the defendant's actions to the criminal event in question. In addition, some laws require that attendant circumstances have occurred, in order for a crime to have occurred. Also, in order for a crime to be prosecuted, corpus delicti (or "proof of a crime") must be established.

    The School of criminology has a structured Bachelor of Arts, Honors incriminology program for its outstanding undergraduate students.
    http://www.sfu.ca/criminology/hons.htm
    Undergraduate Director: Dr. Gail Anderson The School of Criminology has a structured Bachelor of Arts, Honors in Criminology Students normally enter the program upon completion of a minimum of 110 credit hours, but students may enter with less and take one additional course during the first semester of the program with the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Programs. Students are required to complete a minimum of 132 credit hours with grade point averages in accordance with General and Faculty of Arts Graduation requirements (please refer to the Simon Fraser University CALENDAR), including the requirement of a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 3.00 (3.50 for "First Class Honors"). Graduate School first . This holds true even for those with high GPAs who appear to be already eligible for admission to graduate school and who feel that their chances of admission are high. The Honors Program will improve your chances even more and the experience will be invaluable preparation; remember, the program involves only one extra semester of study, not a whole year (as rumour has it!).
