OIC, College of Criminology As if our luck never subsides, on March 2003 Licensure Examination for Criminologists, we were able to maintain the same record (second top performing school) on the same category (bracket C). It was our founding Dean, the late Gen. Cicero C. Campos, former President of this institution, who in 1988, constructed a road for us, which he called "College of Criminology." The road bore complete signs and symbols precluding travelers from being lost along the way. One sign says, "The profession of peace keeping is an honorable calling. So be proud of it. Don't be the second best. But be the best and the brightest."

If you have a fairly decent grade point average (generally, no lower than 2.5; the higher the better), an average or above-average score on the GRE , and can get good letters of recommendation, you should consider applying to graduate school in criminal justice. Remember the application deadline for most places is January, with March at the latest. If you are dead set on going to LAW SCHOOL , have a high GPA, at least a practice score on the LSAT, and tons of money, then visit the Law School Admission Council for more information. For a look at Law Schools, visit web links such as Cornell's Directory of Legal Academia or best of all, my MegaLaw webpage. WRITTEN SOURCES OF INFORMATION Peterson's Guide, Barron's Guide, and Arco's Guide are three of the most well-known catalogs and are easily found in any library or bookstore. For CJ specifically, see if your local library or career center has a copy of "Guide to Graduate Programs in Criminal Justice and Criminology" which details programs at more than 1000 institutions nationwide. The publisher is ACJS and for the last five years, they've been sold out of the book. They also publish a document called "Minimum Standards for CJ Education." Please note that there was an incorrect URL and other information in the paragraph in this article on COPLINK. This information has now been corrected within the article. Our apologies to WhiteOak Communications, which represents COPLINK for its client, Knowledge Computing Corporation. While we still struggle with the more prosaic crimes such as murder, rape, arson, and fraud, we now have to worry about chemical and biological warfare, radioactive dirty bombs, cybercrime, cyberwarfare, and nuclear ballistic missile attack from dictatorial goons and extremist groups with deep pockets. Some even claim that the billions of dollars we pour into violent movies, brutal sports, and misogynistic music encourage violence. The following list may serve as an introduction to the many Web sites devoted to both the prosaic and exotic in the field of criminology.

CLASSICAL AND POSITIVIST SCHOOLS OF CRIMINOLOGY
It is better to prevent crimes than to punish them (Cesare Beccaria) THE CLASSICAL SCHOOL
The "classical school" (so-called because the divergent ideas of many scholars with similar ideas during this epoch were called that by history) was a social movement that existed during the late 1700s and the early 1800s. The "classical" part of it is derived from the similarity in thinking between those scholars and early Greek philosophy (Aristotle, Plato, etc.) which also put forth the importance of free will . However, "free will" is NOT the only defining feature of something that is "classical", and in fact, there is a "neoclassical school" that is based on the idea of character (as a compromise between free will and determinism) and a rational choice school of thought which has similar but not the essential features of "classical," Rational choice is the idea that there are many more complex decision making variables in the reasoning process of offenders than the simple free will - deterrence model makes out. Classical criminology originated the concept of deterrence, although they didn't call it that at the time. The concept of rationally preventing crime by punishment (what they meant by deterrence at the time) was considered a great humanitarian reform, superior in many ways to cruel and unusual medieval torture practices that existed. It is best understood against the backdrop of what history calls the

Violence in America has reached epidemic proportions. Today, all Americans are touched directly or indirectly by violent acts. In response, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) was founded in 1992 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to provide informed assistance to groups committed to understanding and preventing violence, particularly adolescent violence. Since that time, our mission has expanded to encompass violence across the life course. Located at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Criminology Careers, Criminology Degrees
What is a criminologist?
Criminologists are academics who study crime and the law. They provide theoretical explanations of delinquent and criminal behavior, analyze criminal law and criminal behavior system patterns.
What do criminologists do?
Criminologists are primarily involved in teaching and research. Criminologists contribute to the study of drug addiction, juvenile justice and delinquency, policing and police administration and policy, corrections, correctional administration and policy, macro-level models of criminal behavior, theoretical criminology, criminal ethnography, victimology, and radical criminology. They also look at psychological, sociological, biological factors related to criminology. Some criminologists are involved in community initiatives, evaluation and policy projects with federal, state and local criminal justice agencies.
Where do criminologists work?
Criminologists may work in universities teaching criminology, legal studies, law and sociology while conducting their own research. Federal and state justice agencies employ criminologists as research officers and policy advisers. Others are in private practice providing consulting services for such issues as law reform, juvenile justice, crime statistics and adult corrections.

Criminology
Criminology is a sub-field of sociology dealing with matters related to crime and criminal behavior. It includes fields such as crime statistics , criminal psychology, forensic science law enforcement , and detective methods. Naturally, criminology must take into account that the definition of crime varies according to the cultural mores and, especially, laws of a given area. This is an area where caution is warranted; if one is comparing, e.g., violent crimes between nations, one must be careful that the actions counted in that category are similar for each nation; otherwise the comparison is meaningless. Criminology has, over time, developed several schools of thought, including:
