This is the first comprehensive bibliography that deals with comparative criminology and other signficant works in the field dating from the 1960s. The guide covers 500 studies on crime, law, and social control in two or more cultures. The volume is organized into three main sections: meaning and measurement in criminology, cross-national crime rates, and social control and penal policies. The work is intended for students, for scholars and professionals, and for all researchers concerned with criminal justice studies around the world.
The bibliography includes a preface, eleven chapters on topics of major importance, appendices, and author and subject indexes. The chapters deal with general issues in comparative criminology, cross-national data, perceptions of crime, violent crime, crimes against property, economic and political crime, transnational corporate crime, correlates of crime, underdevelopment and modernization, social control and dispute resolution, and criminal justice and penal policies. The appendices point to useful sources for further research. In addition, a full author and subject index is provided.

The Hidden Control of Code
To give you a better understanding of control through code, I have excerpted bits and pieces of e-mail I received in one 24-hour period. Someone, as it turns out, if I can believe the information in the e-mail flow, someone whose hobby includes porno and whose English is far below standard, got hold of the e-mail list of the American Society of Criminology and created a huge listserv, sending to this large group of criminologists all at once. Most professionals are already on more mailing lists, and have more correspondence than they can keep up with. None of us were too happy with this state of affairs. I saw the problem at about 10:00 on Sunday night. Downloaded the messages, since I run an ASC listserv, thinking that someone had somehow misused my own listsev. I decided to deal with it Monday. Monday morning I had 156 e-mails, most of them the new listserv (turned out they hadn't got to mine), and most of them angry, with my poor students' e-mails sandwiched in between. I read one. It purported to tell me how to unsubscribe.

new items are marked with a What peacemaking is
The peacemaking model of criminal justice is emerging as an effective, humane policy approach. Peacemaking emphasizes social justice, conflict resolution, rehabilitation, and a belief that people must cooperate in democratic institutions in order to develop meaningful communities. The peace perspective is sometimes misunderstood as being soft on crime as it rejects the rhetoric of the war-on-crime perspective. However, crime is not excused. Both the individual's culpability and the contribution of the institutions of society are taken into account. The peace perspective requires social justice. Only by transforming both the criminal and society can we hope to develop effective, fair and human responses to crime. Other stuff
