Be it resolved that because social science research has demonstrated the death penalty to be racist in application and social science research has found no consistent evidence of crime deterrence through execution, the ASC publicly condemns this form of punishment and urges its members to use their professional skills in legislatures and the courts to seek a speedy abolition of this form of punishment (ASC Annual Meeting, Montreal, 1987). Abstract
Publicity has recently been given to the problem of advance fee fraud, particularly involving a group of Nigerian nationals. This paper examines the nature of this phenomenon, explains the reasons behind its development and investigates the way in which its occurrence has escalated. It also examines how traditional law enforcement measures have been of limited effectiveness in controlling it.

With the rise of proactive approaches to resolving community crime problems, Environmental Criminology has increasingly become an important area of study. Theories such as Rational Choice, and Routine Activities are useful frameworks by which to understand the occurrence of crime and disorder. Spatially oriented perspectives, like the Crime Pattern Theory, provide explanations for crime concentration. These theories enable us to better understand the dynamics of crime situations; thereby, providing a solid foundation from which effective crime prevention strategies can be developed. The mission of the Crime Prevention Analysis Lab-California State University, San Bernardino is to support and conduct research focusing on public space, through grants and contracts, with a variety of tools and methods not commonly used within criminal justice. Research will involve the Blended Approach to crime analysis incorporating both community-wide crime mapping and place intensive methods. The purpose is to: provide a comprehensive problem dissection from which solutions can be developed; assist agencies and community groups in the process of developing solutions; conduct evaluations of crime prevention strategies; and, disseminate best practices.

    By Wayne Petherick
    Introduction
The investigative technique, most commonly referred to as criminal profiling, has recently risen in popularity both in practical use and media portrayals. A quick visit to any bookstore will reveal the popularity of the true crime section, and the recent flood of fiction works with a likable lead detective who profiles the offender is equal in volume. Depending on the literature one reads, the professional development of profiling over the past several decades will most likely be attributed to the work of the Behavioral Sciences Unit (BSU) at the FBI Academy, Quantico, Virginia. More specifically, a few key agents will be known by name, if not by reputation, including John Douglas, Robert Ressler and Roy Hazelwood amongst others. Many of the mass-market conceptions often include an agent as a representative of the BSU working on the case with local law enforcement. While the role of the Bureau in the development of profiling cannot be denied, they are often afforded a greater involvement in criminal investigations than they have in reality, and many of the agents (current and retired) are often attributed with developing methods that were in place before they even reached the FBI.

Dr Clive Norris and Gary Armstrong of the Centre for criminology and Criminal Justiceat Hull University, The Unforgiving Eye CCTV surveillance in public space
    http://www.privacyinternational.org/issues/cctv/
    Video Surveillance
In the past decade, the use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) for surveillance and crime control has grown to unprecedented levels. In Britain between 150 and 300 million pounds (225 - 450 million dollars) per year is now spent on a surveillance industry involving an estimated 300,000 cameras covering shopping areas, housing estates, car parks and public facilitiesa in great many towns and cities. While Britain is clearly the lead nation in implementing CCTV, other countries are quickly following. North America, Australia and some European countries which a few years ago would have rejected the technology, are installing the cameras in urban environments. CCTV is very quickly becoming an integral part of crime control policy, social control theory and Community consciousness. It is promoted by police and politicians as primary solution for urban dysfunction. It is no exaggeration to conclude that in Britain, the technology has had more of an impact on the evolution of law enforcement policy than just about any technology initiative in the past two decades. Privacy International has consistently expressed its concern over the development of this technology. This page offers information and advice about the downside of a technology which we believe will have a profound effect on future generations.
