Crime, Law and Related
Links on the Web
Updated: June 7, 2004
The Redwood Highway begins at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Californiathe beginning of the Redwood Highway North (Hwy. 101). The above photograph was taken with a digital camera just a jump away from toll plaza in the middle of the Gate looking Northward. To the immediate right or east lie the remains of Alcatraz ; a short distance to the east-northeast is San Quentin ; much farther north, past the Telecom Valley, MendoSonoma, Silicon, or Digital Coast, is Pelican Bay . Together these prisons represent the past, present, and future, respectively, of incarceration. They also reflect the state of communities that rely on them to resolve their crime problems.
The Redwood Highway contains links from and about the world that deal with the nature, extent, control, and prevention of crime. It is devoted to helping us understand the nature of our crime problems as well as how our laws, punishments, and relatively meager prevention strategies have developed and can be changed. There are also links to the scientific study of crime, electronic and print publication, and the profession of criminology. It should be of interest to both professionals in the field and more casual web surfers. The Redwood Highway attempts to focus on quality links and is annotated. Links are usually updated every other week or more.

    Mission
The Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP) was founded in 1992 as the Research Group Drug Policy, Criminal Policy and International Crime and got its final name in 2002. It is the intention of IRCP, which is integrated in the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology of the Faculty of Law of Ghent University, to conduct and promote internationally relevant scientific research regarding criminal policy issues.
The field of research of IRCP focuses on three main themes: justice and home affairs in the EU, international and comparative criminal law and criminal justice, and Belgian criminal law and criminal justice. More in-depth, the following phenomena are studied: drugs, organised crime and corruption, and trafficking in human beings and sexual exploitation of children.
Typical for the scientific activity developed by IRCP is its pursuit of a synthesis of fundamental and empirical research on the one hand, and policy proposals on the other. The implementation of research in scientific service and consultancy is an essential part of the group's activity.
The research activities are carried out by a coherent group of strongly motivated researchers, reinforced with the professional contribution of external collaborators. An ad hoc multidisciplinary team is composed for each research project.
