Careers in Sociology BSOS 398C Job Prospects for The B.A. Careers in Sociology Back To Top Sociology also studies the ways in which people give meaning to their experience. All human behavior is social. The subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob, from crime to religion, from divisions of race, gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, from the sociology of work to the sociology of sport. Few fields have such broad scope and relevance. Because sociology seems to offer something for everyone, it may seem surprising that its career potential is just beginning to be tapped. Thirty years ago, there was really only one visibly prominent career in sociology. To be a sociologist was to be a professor, or at least a teacher of some sort. Although teaching remains the dominant activity among the more than eighteen thousand professional sociologists today, other forms of employment are growing in both numbers and significance. Not all of these jobs are reserved exclusively for sociologists. In some sectors, sociologists are joined by economists, social workers, psychologists and others. All of this represents a growing appreciation of sociology's real and potential contributions.

Editorial You may recall that in the most recent issue of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal there was an editorial lamenting the inadequacy of the "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity" plea as used in contemporary legal proceedings. The editorial noted that the major elements defining the NGBRI plea were in many respects ambiguous, inconsistent from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and seriously antiquated. The McNaughton ruling, on which the NGBRI plea is primarily based, stated that the defendant should be judged insane if he/she could not distinguish between right and wrong at the time the criminal act was committed. The McNaughton ruling was first issued in England in 1843.

Message From The Dean
The undergraduate Criminal Justice program introduces students to the theory and practice of the United States criminal justice system. The educational program emphasizes the study of the various sub-systems of the criminal justice system. Course emphases include: adult and juvenile crime causation theory; constitutional and criminal law; the courts; institutional and community-based corrections; and municipal and federal law enforcement. Possible careers include the practice of law; federal, state, and municipal law enforcement; professional human services, including counseling, probation, and parole; and criminal justice agency administration. Students receive instruction from a wide variety of experienced criminal justice system practitioners, including judges, attorneys, justice system agency administrators, as well as a highly-qualified professional academic faculty. Our first goal is to develop a fully educated person. We therefore provide professional education combined with an integrated liberal arts core curriculum. The University's Core Curriculum provides students with broad exposure to the liberal arts and helps them acquire the capacity for critical thought, which is needed to pursue detailed analysis of the United States Justice System. Our second goal is to prepare highly qualified potential criminal justice system employees. Consequently, the Criminal Justice program offers courses that emphasize the development of students' capacity for creative thought, analytical reasoning, and reading and writing ability. Moreover, because criminal justice is an applied discipline, the faculty has implemented a strong internship program as an essential part of the academic program. Roger Williams University Criminal Justice program students have recently completed internships with numerous regional criminal justice system agencies, including the United States Secret Service, the United States Marshal's Service, the Rhode Island State Police, the Rhode Island Department of the Attorney General, and numerous municipal and local police departments.

Developmental Psychology
A developmental psychologist investigates the emotional, mental, physical, and social development of individuals that takes place throughout life. Their focus used to be on childhood and adolescence, as one may study children to analyze learning processes, language development, and parents' influence on behavior, or study infants for patterns of social, motor, and sensory development. However, as life expectancy increases, they are becoming increasingly interested in aging, especially in researching and developing ways to help elderly people stay as independent as possible. One may administer tests to gauge patterns of development and decline, conduct animal experiments, or formulate theories for use in such fields as juvenile delinquency, education/guidance of children, parent education, and welfare of aged. May specialize in study and treatment of children and be designated a Child Psychologist. To be a developmental or child psychologist requires a doctorate degree.

By Meghan Mandeville , News Research Reporter
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." A sign in Jeanne Woodford 's office reminds her of this advice every day. Once uttered by anthropologist Margaret Mead , these words reflect the newly appointed corrections director's faith the nearly 50,000 people who work for the California Department of Corrections and her commitment to the department itself. When Woodford stepped into her new position in February, she inherited a department that had been bogged down by fiscal issues and scarred by scandals, mostly involving the state correctional officers union and "code of silence" among CDC officers during investigations into incidents at correctional facilities. The department's reputation had been tarnished and its credibility weakened. ..More Attention Employers

Criminal Justice Career Opion: Probation and Parole Officer
CJC Staff
Many people who are convicted of crimes are placed on probation instead of being sent to prison. During probation, offenders must stay out of trouble and meet requirements dictated by the court. Probation officers supervise offenders who have been placed on probation. Parole officers perform many of the same duties that probation officers perform; however, parole officers supervise offenders who have been released from prison to ensure that they comply with the conditions of their parole.
Often the job of probation and parole officer is combined in small communities. Probation and parole officers supervise offenders on probation or parole through personal contact with the offender and his or her family. Some offenders are required to wear an electronic device so that probation officers can monitor their activities. Officers may arrange for offenders to get substance abuse rehabilitation or job training. They also attend court hearings to update the court on the offender's compliance with the terms of his or her sentence and on the offender's efforts at rehabilitation.
Duties: Probation and parole officers may perform some or all of the following:
Review and evaluate legal and social history of offender or inmate
Determine nature and extent of inmate's or offender's criminal record
Determine current social problems
Inform offender or inmate of requirements of conditional release such as office visits, restitution payments, or educational and employment stipulations

Careers in Criminal Justice
Criminal justice is the system of law enforcement, the bar, the judiciary, corrections and probation that is directly involved in the apprehension, prosecution, defense, sentencing, incarceration and supervision of those suspected of or charged with criminal offenses. The term criminal justice refers to an interdisciplinary field that draws upon the knowledge bases of criminology, sociology, psychology, law, public policy, computer technology and other related disciplines to develop insights into the causes and prevention of criminal behavior. It is an area of knowledge concerned with understanding and controlling crime. The contemporary criminal justice system in the United States is monumental in size. It includes more than 55,000 public agencies employing more than 1.5 million people. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, it has a budget of more than $60 billion for agencies, 6,000 correctional operations. There are approximately 18,000 police agencies, 17,000 courts, 8,000 prosecutorial agencies, 6,000 correctional institutions and almost 4,000 probation and parole departments. If you are not sure if this is the right major for you, you may want to enroll in "Careers in Criminal Justice," an introductory course into the numerous careers available as a criminal justice graduate.

What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a science-based healthcare profession, which views human movement as central to the health and well being of individuals. Physiotherapists identify and maximise movement potential through health promotion, preventive healthcare, treatment and rehabilitation. The core skills used by chartered physiotherapists include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the application of electrophysical modalities. Fundamental to the physiotherapist's approach, however, is an appreciation of the psychological, cultural and social factors which influence their clients and the patient's own active role in helping themselves maximise independence and function. Physiotherapy is an autonomous profession and practice is characterised by reflective behaviour and systematic clinical reasoning, both contributing to and underpinning a problem-solving approach to patient-centred care.
