Criminal Justice (CRJ)
Criminal justice is a diverse field that includes study and preparation in understanding the nature and environment of criminal behavior. The program includes investigating and examining strategies, programs and agencies involved in the public and private responses to crime. The study of criminal justice prepares students for careers in law, law enforcement, court services, corrections, juvenile work and security operations. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with a major or minor in Criminal Justice, Dakota Wesleyan University also offers an Associate of Arts degree in this area. All of these options are offered within a strong liberal arts program, which stresses an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge and understanding and prepares students not only for jobs, but for careers of leadership, service and responsibility. Major
Students who pursue an academic major in criminal justice complete a course of study involving a minimum of 39 academic semester credits. A core program of 24 required credits is augmented with a minimum of 15 elective credits. Students who major in criminal justice minor in a variety of academic disciplines depending on their goals. Criminal justice majors frequently minor in human services, behavioral sciences (psychology) or business (accounting).

Please select one of the following: police checks: some convictions are never spent Fairness at work Police checks: Some convictions are never spent Jill Parkin First published in January 2002. You expect to be police checked when applying for jobs in schools. Certainly, the law has a long arm and a long memory in terms of education. The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 was originally designed to give offenders a second chance and job prospects. So some offences become spent and no longer appear on criminal records. But those working with children are not covered by the Act. To have a record, you needn't have been to court. You can plead guilty to some motoring offences by letter. Police cautions are usually done on the spot. But both are on your record and need to be declared. It's a legal anomaly that cautions, police reprimands and warnings regarding minor misdemeanours are not covered by the Rehabilitation Act and so officially are never spent. This is one of the main reasons why its amendment is being considered. The police report all convictions of those working with children to the Department for Education and Skills, with the exception of minor traffic offences. Local authorities, schools and job agencies have a duty to make sure applicants know they must declare their records.

Loyola University Chicago undergraduates interested in careers in law enforcement, criminal corrections, probation/parole or vocational rehabilitation have a competitive advantage in seeking entry level positions in these areas if they secure academic and practical experience to supplement their undergraduate degrees. In addition, students interested in pursuing graduate or professional training in forensic psychology, law, or criminology also benefit from this type of undergraduate exposure. The employment outlook in all areas of law enforcement and corrections is strong and is expected to increase faster than the average for all other occupations for several years ( Occupational Outlook Handbook ). In light of these considerations, the Departments of Psychology and Criminal Justice have designed a sequence of study that will provide students with the academic and experiential backgrounds they will need to pursue a career or professional study in criminology.
