CFEJ is a loosely-knit organization of people, from all walks of life and political persuasions, who want changes made in the way our criminal justice system deals with the problems of crime and prison overcrowding.
AND who are willing to take an active role in accomplishing these changes... Our commonalties are: 1) We are "FED UP" with having a criminal justice system which wastes our tax dollars and does little to reduce crime. 2) We are working towards SOLUTIONS, instead of just complaining about the problems. 3) We are working toward the implimentation of an alternative system which would result in the criminals being afraid, instead of the citizens. 4) We believe the proposed changes will make our streets safer; but, will NOT cost a lot of tax dollars

International Justice for Women: The ICC Marks a New Era
Human Rights Watch Backgrounder, July 1, 2002
    Printer Frindly PDF Version

    I. Introduction Women's rights activists throughout the world - of every political stripe, faith, sexual orientation, nationality, and ethnicity - mobilized at each step of the International Criminal Court (ICC) process. They have worked to create an independent court to afford women greater protection from violations of human rights and humanitarian law. Women's rights activists participated in every major United Nations preparatory meeting on the ICC. They worked to ensure that the range of abuses that happen to women was accurately reflected in the list of crimes over which the ICC would have jurisdiction. They worked to ensure that the rules and procedures governing how the court functions would be responsive to gender-specific crimes. Activists held in-country workshops to educate other women and policy makers about the benefits of ICC adoption and ratification. They lobbied their home country officials to sign and then ratify the Rome Statute, which outlined the establishment and structure of the ICC. That the ICC has come into force today and is potentially a powerful instrument for protecting women's rights is a testament to this indefatigable activism and determination.

    119. The Daily Aztec: The 'Nazification' Of The Criminal Justice System
An editorial argues that the war on crime is misguided.

The 'Nazification' of the criminal justice system
Response to the editorial, "Gang explosion"
Each year someone is in custody, it means $30,000 more for the criminal justice system. ... One way to offset these prison costs is to raise the cost of university tuition.
    GUEST COLUMN/Robert Billburg
O n Thursday, Feb. 29, I was early for the office hours of my friend, criminal justice administration Professor Tom Gitchoff. I grabbed a copy of The Daily Aztec on my way to West Commons and, inside, I found an editorial about the gang explosion.
I wanted to see how their truth matched my reality. What saved the editorial was the part, "The gang problem is an institutional problem and cannot be fixed with the 'lock'em up and throw away the key' approach."
At the beginning of the fifth paragraph, it says "Gangs are the main reason for the increase in juvenile violent crime," and throughout most of the editorial, something was deeply lacking in the conception of the whole problem. But I know how so many people believe gangs are the cause: it's what our politicians and chiefs want us to believe.
What follows is nothing less than a complete and total condemnation of the War on Crime. This comes from my 12 years of experience with a criminal justice agency within the county.
