What is Forensic Psychology?
There is still considerable debate over exactly what 'forensic psychology' is, a debate which can be seen clearly in the letters pages of The Psychologist in recent years. For all practical intents and purposes, forensic psychology is coming to be seen as an applied area of psychology, which relates to crime, the criminal justice system, and the judicial process. Forensic psychologists work within prisons, the police forces, special hospitals, private practice and academia, and are involved in a wide variety of tasks. Employment prospects for qualified forensic psychologists are currently excellent and the good job market has witnessed the emergence of an increasing number of postgraduate courses offering training in forensic psychology. Not surprisingly, the demand for places on these courses is quite high. The purpose of this article is to attempt to outline what training is currently available and how interested students can improve their chances of gaining a place on one of the courses.

An Interesting Career in Psychology: Forensic Psychologist
Anthony J. Pinizzotto, PhD, Federal Bureau of Investigation

Since my entrance on duty with the FBI in 1988, I have researched various areas of law enforcement safety. This research resulted in a number of articles, training guides, and publications including Killed in the Line of Duty and In the Line of Fire.
My original focus in forensic psychology, since the publication of my dissertation in 1988, has been on the application of principles of psychology to crime scenes and the subsequent interview and interrogation of the offender. This led to the interest and eventual practice of investigative or forensic hypnosis.

february 13, 2002: click here for the latest update. Hullo. Welcome to the "Criminal Psychology: Among Other Things" website. I've made a career change. Instead of becoming a forensic psychologist, I am pursuing law school and will be headed to law school this fall. I plan to become a federal prosecutor and send people to prison :). However, this site remains as is. I continue to have my interests and pursuits in forensic psychology, and will continue to research it. So, this means from time to time, this site will be nourished with new content. However, being that my career has been expanded to law, most likely psychological content will disappear, and more law stuff will appear. I still love Psychology, and I still know a lot of Psychology. So, please, don't be upset. Just be glad that I'm finally updating this site....It's been a year and a half since I touched this thing. Enjoy the material that has compiled in the past five years. All rules still apply - please read below. Please VISIT the Frequently Asked Questions page before emailing me.

About Forensic Psychology
What is forensic psychology?
There is debate about the proper use of the term “forensic psychology.” Some people use a very broad definition, to refer to any application of psychological principles and methods to any area of the legal system. Others use the term to refer only to the application of clinical psychological techniques to the legal system. Some forensic psychologists are quite specialized, and are more properly called police psychologists (if they limit their practice to working with law enforcement agencies and officers) or correctional psychologists (if they limit their practice to working with correctional facilities, staff, and/or inmates).
What do forensic psychologists do?
If we use the broad definition of the term, they do a lot of different things: Basic and applied research on the legal system itself and/or any of its participants (study of legal issues and practices, criminal behavior, police officers, jury behavior, eyewitness testimony, memory, perception, etc.)

    http://dse212.port5.com/forensic.html
Focus on Forensic Psychology Up until 10 years ago or so almost every psychology graduate wanted to be a clinical psychologist working in mental health. Nowadays, and mainly because of the success of "Cracker" and TV programmes like it, most of them want to be Forensic or Criminal Psychologists. Forensic psychology is the interface between psychology and the law. Forensic psychologists may provide services which are both clinical and forensic in nature so, for example, it may involve treating individuals who are emotionally traumatized by an accident or commenting on the extent of that trauma as an expert. Offender profiling and crime analysis are the two areas that most of us identify as being their key role but in fact a great deal of the work is laborious, pain-staking background research. Training covers a variety of areas, for example, examinating the evidence that consistent criminal tendencies can be reliably assessed and the extent to which personality factors can explain that consistency. The relationship between crime, law and moral judgement. Perspectives on the origins of the criminal tendency in childhood. The role of opportunism in criminal decision-making in relation to environmental factors and attempts to prevent crime. The role of victims in creating, defining and reporting crime, and the psychological consequences of crime for victims and potential victims. The actions of victims, police, witnesses and the courts. The behaviour, attitudes, and role of witnesses. The position of psychologically "abnormal" offenders.

What is Forensic Psychology? Recognised by the ESRC for Research Training Forensic psychology examines psychological theories, methods and processes within the context of the legal, criminal and civil justice systems. In particular it looks at the treatment and assessment of offenders, especially those who are mentally disordered, contributes to the investigation of crime by examining issues such as identification of suspects, investigative interviewing, psychological profiling and detecting deception. Forensic psychologist work in collaboration with criminal justice practitioners such as police and probation as well as other psychologists within the special hospitals and the prison service. What is Special about the MSc in Forensic Psychology at Surrey? We have a strong and long tradition of Forensic Psychology at Surrey. Professor Lionel Haward, recognised as a founding father of the discipline, was based at Surrey for many years as was Professor David Canter who pioneered investigative psychology before moving to Liverpool University. The present course director, Dr Katarina Fritzon, and the Professor of Forensic Psychology, Jennifer Brown, work closely with colleagues from Broadmoor Hospital to give the Surrey course a distinctive emphasis in policing and treatment of the mentally disordered offender.

There have been a number of recent developments in the socio-political landscape, including escalation of domestic and international terrorism; the public outcry to "get tough on crime"; and the changing demographics of those who are served by, as well as those who administer, the legal and mental health systems. These changes call for sensitivity to the unique dilemmas that confront forensic psychologists and those they serve, with an eye to advocacy for change. Our program significantly enhances a fundamental knowledge of psychology with exposure to a very broad range of issues that frame the discipline. Both the PhD and the PsyD degree curricula are formulated to meet the ever-evolving needs of forensic institutions, not just those that exist today.

The AIU College of Arts and Sciences offers both PsyD and PhD programs in Forensic Psychology in Fresno and a part-time PsyD program in Los Angeles.

Note: The statutes for licensure and independent practice as a psychologist in New York State currently require an earned doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited institution. The MA program in forensic psychology qualifies one to function as a practitioner in agency and institutional settings, or under the supervision of a licensed psychologist.
    Program Design and Requirements
The Master of Arts program, designed for those with some background in psychology and/or criminal justice, requires 45 credits, 18 in the forensic core and 27 in support courses in psychology. Included in the program are the domains of knowledge and skill acquisition which we consider requisite for a master's degree in forensic psychology. These include: 1) an understanding of the theories and applications within the field, 2) a knowledge of counseling theories and applications, of psychological testing and its application to legal questions and settings, of theories of consultation and education, and 3) skill development specifically relevant to forensic settings. Thus, this program includes three courses in the theory and practice of forensic psychology, two assessment courses, three counseling courses, abnormal psychology, and two different situated internships. Other requirements include two courses in community psychology, a research methods course, and a final project. An understanding of the role and importance of the community and institutional structures of both the legal and mental health systems is fundamental to forensic psychology. Two required community courses provide this knowledge base and the skills necessary for interaction and intervention within such structures. A strong background in research methodology is essential for any master's program in psychology and the Behavior Research Methods course fulfills this criterion. As with all other master's programs at Sage Graduate School, the Research Seminar or optional Thesis provides a culminating experience. There is no emphasis in this program on the teaching of criminal profiling.
