It created a heroic myth out of the Charge of the Light Brigade, in Florence Nightingale produced one of history's great heroines, was the first conflict to be covered by the press and pointed the way to what mass warfare would be like in the twentieth century. Based on the diplomatic and military despatches of the period, many of them previously unseen, Trevor Royle's fascinating book is the first complete account of a war which helped to shape the modern world.

History One of the most controversial military expeditions in European military history must be the Crimean War .
The allied forces of Britain , France , Turkey and later Sardinia attempted and succeeded to subdue the military might and aspirations of Russia , be it for a short period .
An expedition beset by Cholera , incompetence , mismanagement and beurocracy but still managed to invade the Crimean peninsula and eventuate force the Sebastopol garrison to capitulate .
The initial force was 28,000 men , a modest force compared to the vast numbers employed by Napoleon in Russia and also that of the German army in the Second World War when they attempted ti invade Russia .
This small force also when compared with the huge Imperial Russian army of 930,000 men , of which 770,000 were under arms .
Due to the incompetence of the higher echelons in the command structure on both sides of the Crimean War
this ended up as a soldiers war with the stoic courage and determination of the ordinary soldier and lower ranking officers saving the day time and again for the higher commanders . This was especially apparent at Inker man .

Baldwin, Gordon. Roger Fenton: Pasha and Bayadere . Los Angeles : J. Paul Getty Museum, 1996. Call number: TR652.B35 1996 A good source for background on Fenton (mostly post-Crimean War) and the culture of realism in British Orientalism, as well as Fenton's training as a painter and how he translated the "high art" of painting to photography. Assists in understanding that, given the constraints of photographic techniques at the time, Fenton sought to create, through the poses in which he set his subjects, photographs that could be viewed as paintings (paintings depicting military scenes being considered "high art"). Fenton, Roger. Roger Fenton : Photographer of the 1850s : Hayward Gallery, London, 4 February to 17 April 1988 . [London] : South Bank Board, 1988. Call number: TR647.F46 1988 A very good representative sample of the range of Fenton's work from an exhibit at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1988. Unfortunately, not all the Crimean War photos are included in this volume, though does include all eleven views issued as the Panorama of the Plateau of Sebastopol. In her introduction to the Crimean War section of the exhibit, Valerie Lloyd says, "...the photographs demand to be ‘read' for the detailed observations they provide. The

Raised in the warm glow following the Great American Revolution, the idealist generation of the Civil War cycle, the transcendentalist, were a pampered lot. As they approached adulthood religious conversion, radical social reform and idealistic movements swept the land. The Transcendentalist school of literature and philosophy was spawned. The movement peaked in 1837 and began to subside. But in 1857, as the Transcendentalists were solidly in control of the country, the Dred Scott decision ushered in the ultimate secular event, the Civil War between the States. This event drug on for eight years and took a mighty toll on the psyche of the country. The effect was enough to disrupt the normal flow of the generations and the youth of those terrible years never developed the civic strength of their counterparts in other cycles in American history.
