In , during the Wars of the Austrian Succession, the Regiment first became known as 'The Green Howards'.
At that time, the Regimental Colonel was the Honourable Charles Howard, the second son of the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Following the convention of the time, the Regiment was known as "Howard's Regiment", - after the name of the regiment's Colonel.
However,in the campaign the Regiment was brigaded with another regiment whose Colonel was also called Howard. Thus, some distinction between the two regiments had to be made.

Ottoman history in the nineteenth century was dominated by European wars and expansion. The Europeans madly scrambled for territory throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Some of this was European territory, but far and away, the bulk of the territory that Europeans desired was non-European. Human history has never seen such rapid and frenetic annexation of territory as occurred in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The end result for the Ottomans was the loss of Empire, and, finally, the loss of the Ottoman dynasty itself.
The Crimean War
The first major Ottoman war, the Crimean War
This war is unique in Ottoman history in that the outcome wasn't heavily influenced by the Ottomans themselves. The war soon became a European war when Britain and France allied with the Ottomans in order to protect their lucrative trade interests in the region. The war ended badly for the Russians, and the Paris peace of 1856 was unfavorable to them. In textbooks, the Crimean War is presented entirely from the perspective of the Europeans, for it brought home the fact that more European powers were willing to overthrow the old order than to maintain it. It had, though, important consequences for the Ottoman Empire, as well. From this point onwards, the Ottoman Empire saw itself as being heavily controlled by Europeans. The Crimean War initiated a decline in Ottoman morale and a helplessness. Europeans, for their part, no longer saw the Ottomans as an equal force to be reckoned with, but as a tool to be used in larger European concerns.

THE BRITISH had expected to be fighting the French, in face of the aggressive policies of the Emperor Napoleon III. Instead, their first European war since 1815 found the two old enemies bizarrely allied against the Russians to protect the Turks. The background was the decline of the Ottoman Empire, which encouraged Russian imperialism and stoked the British nightmare of Russian interference in India. The foreground was the everlasting wrangling between Greek Orthodox and Latin (Catholic) Christians over the Holy Places in Palestine. Looking to gain Roman Catholic support at home, in 1852 Napoleon in demanded that the Sublime Porte in Constantinople recognise France as the protector of Christian monks and pilgrims in the Holy Places. As a hint he sent a French warship up the Dardanelles and the Porte bowed to his wishes and had a key to the Church of the Nativity's main door handed over to the Latins. The whole situation was a red rag to Tsar Nicholas I, traditional champion of the Greek Orthodox, who insisted on Russia being confirmed by the Porte as the protector of the Holy Places and of all Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire. When the Porte quibbled, in July of 1853 a Russian army invaded the Ottoman provinces of Moldavia and Wallachia (modern Romania). The Turks declared war and In November the Russians destroyed a Turkish fleet at Sinope in the Black Sea.

And what right had the Allies to be there in the first place, Why invade the Crimea as a crucial and necessary phase of the Eastern or Russian War? Now with hindsight we may perhaps take a clearer look at why the Allies had no other choice than to be where they were at that moment in time. We may also refer to Cause and Effect so that we may understand clearly the main reasons for this Allied assault on Sevastopol.

Introduction
Smyrna, in what is now W Turkey, was one of the first Christian communities in the world, and is mentioned in Revelation . See also the 2nd cent. AD mathematician Theon of Smyrna Part of the Ottoman (i.e. Turkish) Empire from c.1425, Smyrna was for centuries a prosperous trading port to rival Constantinople. The Western powers established commercial bases there (by agreement with the Ottoman Empire) as early as the 16th century (e.g. the English government-backed Levant Company estab 1581), and many western merchants lived there with their families. For centuries Smyrna was a cosmopolitan place with a large permanent European population. The westerners, from many different countries in W Europe, tended to marry among themselves, and all the families ended up related. The Maltass family went out there from England in the mid-18th cent.

Having never learned much about the Crimean War, aside from Tennysons famous bit of poetry, I was a bit intimidated by the breadth of this book. That ended once I opened it and found a coherent and well-annotated history that had enough meat to satisfy hard-core historians, yet enough cheese to intrigue and lure along the casual reader. While I cannot say "I couldnt put it down," (the authors English writing style compelled me to take periodic breaks to absorb) I eagerly went through this book and not only learned a great deal about the war itself but, as Royles thesis observes, its greater impact on warfare, medicine, politics, media, and nearly every other aspect of the world. If you believe Royle, and I am inclined to, the Crimean War was a seminal event of World History.

FENTON, Roger b. Mar 1819; d. 8 Aug 1869 Roger Fenton is particularly known for his coverage of the Crimean War, which is a pity, because it only formed a small proportion of his output in other areas, and also somewhat obscures the major part he played in promoting photography in general. After studying at London University, Fenton studied art in London, and later in Paris under the painter Paul Delaroche . However, having had little success as a painter, in 1844 he returned to London and studied law. In January 1851 he visited Paris, and was impressed by the freedom that photographers in France had been granted as a result of the Daguerreotype process having been made available to all. By contrast, progress in England was slow because of Talbot's claims arising from his patent. In 1852 he visited Russia, and his photographs were amongst the first ever to be seen in England, guaranteeing him instant fame. Back in England, he proposed the formation of a Photographic Society, and on 10 January 1853 this came into being, and he served as its Secretary for three years. (This is now the Royal Photographic Society Fenton photographed Queen Victoria's family, and also became the official photographer to the British Museum.

and Roger Fenton, who covered the crimean war, though the latter is more adequately described as a public relations exercise for the government of the day.
http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/war.htm
WAR, photography of An early example of documentary photography is the record of war, which brought home to people some grim realities which shattered their fantasies. Photographers of note include James Robertson , who covered the siege of Sebastopol, and Roger Fenton , who covered the Crimean war, though the latter is more adequately described as a public relations exercise for the government of the day. Even as far back as 1839 the use of photography in this area was being talked about. Amongst the many uses of the Daguerreotype , Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac argued, was its capacity to render a landscape precisely. He cited one particular kind of landscape to make his point:
... as three or four minutes are sufficient for execution, a field of battle, with its successive phases, can be drawn with a degree of perfection that could be obtained by no other means. So from the beginning of photography, it was being seen as a means of depicting war scenes. The American poet Oliver Wendell Holmes, writing in 1863 stated: `It is well enough for some Baron Gros or Horace Vernet to please an imperial master with fanciful portraits.... (but) war and battles should have truth for their delineator', and photography would be more suitable for this.
