Crimean War [kr I m E u n] Pronunciation Key Crimean War Eastern Question . The more immediate occasion was a dispute between Russia and France over the Palestinian holy places. Challenging the claim of Russia to guardianship of the holy places, France in 1852 secured from Sultan Abd al-Majid certain privileges for the Latin churches. Russian counterdemands were turned down (1853) by the Ottoman government. In July, 1853, Russia retorted by occupying the Ottoman vassal states of Moldavia and Walachia, and in October, after futile negotiations, the Ottomans declared war. In Mar., 1854, England and France, having already dispatched fleets to the Black Sea, declared war on Russia; Sardinia followed suit in Jan., 1855. Austria remained neutral, but by threatening to enter the war on the Ottoman side forced Russia to evacuate Moldavia and Walachia, which were occupied (Aug., 1854) by Austrian troops. In Sept., 1854, allied troops landed in the Crimea, with the object of capturing Sevastopol . The Russian fortress, defended by Totleben , resisted heroically until Sept., 1855. Allied commanders were Lord

In July 1853 Russia occupied territories in the Crimea that had previously been controlled by Turkey Britain and France was concerned about Russian expansion and attempted to achieve a negotiation withdrawal. Turkey, unwilling to grant concessions declared war on Russia.
After the Russians destroyed the Turkish fleet at Sinope in the Black Sea in November 1853, Britain and France joined the war against Russia. On the 20th September 1854 the Allied army defeated the Russian army at the battle of Alma River (September 1854) but the battle of Balaklava (October 1854) was inconclusive. Soon after British soldiers arrived in Turkey, they began going down with

Afghan War, third, 1919
War launched by Amir Amanullah, who had been placed on the Afghan throne in February 1919 by the army and the Young Afghan radical party, after the murder of his father. He proclaimed a Jihad against Britain, and on 3 May 1919 Afghan troops crossed the Indian border, and occupied Bagh. British Indian troops recaptured Bagh on 11 May, and pushed on into Afghanistan, while British bombers attacked Jalalabad and Kabul. Amanullah sued for peace on 31 May, and peace was restored by the treaty of Rawalpindi (8 August). The treaty reaffirmed Afghan independence, and made it clear that Afghanistan controlled it's own foreign policy. One of the first foreign policy decisions made by Amanullah was to recognise the new Soviet Union. The treaty also ended the large British subsidies to the Afghan government which had helped maintain Afghan neutrality during the First World War.

Crimean War
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Crimean War lasted from to . It was fought between Russia and an alliance of the United Kingdom France , the Ottoman Empire joined somewhat tardily by Piedmont-Sardinia . The majority of the conflict took place around the Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea After a dispute with the Ottoman Empire over the guardianship of several holy towns in Palestine and the protection of Orthodox Christians, Russia invaded Moldavia and Walachia , both semi-autonomous vassals of the Ottoman Empire, resulting in a declaration of war by the Ottomans in late . The Russians, under the command of admiral Nakhimov , the hero of the Battle of Navarino , sank the Ottoman fleet at Sinop on November 30 . The Ottomans were joined by Britain and France on March 28 , and by Sardinia in January Austria also threatened to enter the war on the Ottoman side, causing the Russians to withdraw from the occupied areas, which were immediately occupied by the Austrians, in August The following month, though the immediate cause of war was withdrawn, allied troops landed in the Crimea and besieged the city of Sevastopol , home of the tsar's Black Sea fleet and a threat of future Russian penetration into the Mediterranean. The Russians had to scuttle their ships and used the naval cannons as the additional artillery, and the ships' crews as marines. Admiral

Mrs Frances Driscoll went through the Crimean War with her husband Private Driscoll of the 1st Regiment of Foot. Women were lodged in tents behind the British lines, and "occupied themselves with washing clothes and darning socks and busied themselves in other ways to provide a semplance of comfort for the heroes who fought in the Alma heights or in the fog of Inkerman against such heavy odds." Thomas Smith, Sergeant of the 1st Foot remembers an incident at Gallipoli; "Like Driscoll", he writes, "I was in 1854 a private in 'D' company (Captain Neville) of the 1st Battalion Royal Regiment, now Royal Scots. Our regiment was ordered in March 1854 on station service to Malta, from Plymouth. Without landing at Malta we were ordered to the front. We proceeded to Gallipoli with the complement of women, who would not have been shipped had we been ordered for war service on leaving Plymouth. At Gallipoli our camp equipment was of the most meagre character, especially as we had to make arrangements for married women. Each bell tent accommodated sixteen or seventeen men, but where there was a woman, fourteen including the woman and her husband. In my tent was a Mrs McKenna, and in the next tent was Mrs. Driscoll.

History of the Regiment
The Royal Scots, the oldest Infantry Regiment of the Line in the British Army, was formed in 1633 when Sir John Hepburn under a Royal Warrant granted by King Charles I, raised a body of men in Scotland for service in France. By 1635 he commanded a force of over 8,000, including many who had fought as mercenaries in the "Green Brigade" for King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. It was by virtue of the Royal Warrant that the entire Regiment was considered as British; a regular force in a standing Army which could be recalled to Britain at will. And in 1661, the Regiment was summoned to Britain to bridge the gap between the disbandment of the New Model Army and the creation of a Regular Army, organised along the same lines as the British units in foreign service. The Regiment was thus the original model for all others. In 1680 the Regiment was sent to Tangier and won its first battle honour, On its return to England in 1684 the title "The Royal Regiment of Foot" was conferred by Charles II. During Monmouth's rebellion in 1685, five companies formed part of the force concentrated against the rebels who they met at Sedgemoor. The following year, the Regiment was divided into two battalions and was not to have less until 1949.

Crimean War
The Crimean War was a result of Russian pressure on Turkey; this threatened British commercial and strategic interests in the Middle East and India. France, having provoked the crisis for prestige purposes, used the war to cement an alliance with Britain and to reassert its military power. Anglo-French forces secured Istanbul before attacking Russia in the Black Sea, the Baltic, the Arctic, and the Pacific, supported by a maritime blockade. In September 1854 the allies landed in the Crimea, planning to destroy Sevastopol and the Russian Fleet in six weeks before withdrawing to Turkey. After victory on the River Alma, they hesitated; the Russians then reinforced the city and attacked the allied flank at the battles of Balaklava and the Inkerman. After a terrible winter, the allies cut Russian logistics by occupying the Sea of Azov; then, using superior sea-based logistics, they forced the Russians out of Sevastopol, which fell on September 8-9, 1855. In the Baltic, also a major theater, the allies captured the Åland fortress of Bomarsund in 1854, and destroyed Sveaborg, the Helsinki dockyard, in 1855. These operations detained 200,000 Russian troops in the theater. The British prepared to destroy Cronstadt and St. Petersburg in 1856, using armored warships, steam gunboats, and mortar vessels.

Guide picks In 1853, Catholic France and Orthodox Russia squabbled over jurisdiction within Turkish held Jerusalem. Nicholas I saw this diplomatic conflict as an opportunity to dominate the Turkish Straits into Mediterranean - a reality which would upset the balance of power within Europe. With Russian moves into Turkish Rumania, France and England put aside their mutual distrust and sent an allied force to the area. Causes of the Crimean War

Although the Crimean War resulted directly from the growing political friction between Russian and France over Jerusalem, the "Eastern Question" began to emerge after the Napoleonic wars as a European balance of power problem revolving around the fate of the weakening Ottoman Empire.
