What students should know about campus crime stats By Tom Collins
Arizona Daily Wildcat October 25, 1996

Despite a decline in 1995, theft continues to be the top crime at the UA. "This a great shopping center for the outside community to come and get computers, bicycles and money," University of Arizona Police Lt. Brian Seastone said. There were 563 thefts in 1995 down from 668 in 1994, according to UAPD statistics. The decrease, Seastone said, can be attributed to students becoming more aware and pro-active in the protection of their possessions, calling police to report suspicious activity, and to the arrests that UAPD has made. Burglary is the conscious removal of material from buildings, Seastone said, but contrary to many student and parent opinions, the UA residence halls are not the most often hit. Most burglaries of residence halls involve laundry or smaller items taken when a door is left unlocked, for example, Seastone said. He said offices around campus are most often burglarized for high value items. Through August 1996, there have been 105 burglaries throughout campus, and 511 thefts, including bicycle thefts, Seastone said.

The Black War On White Americans
An Overview of U.S. Crime!
What image do you have of racial violence in the U.S.? What type of person do you think commits interracial or "hate" crime? If you get your information from the mass media (TV, radio, major newspapers, and popular magazines), you probably have an image of a vicious, ignorant, gun-loving, hate-filled, skinhead, Klansman, or militiaman - all white of course, that is a completely false stereotype. The truth is exactly the opposite! The media, protected class minorities, and anti-white politicians expect you to twist in anguish over black-on-black crime or the rare but well-publicized white-on-black crime, but they never mention the much greater amount of black-on-white crime? Yes, blacks commit more crime against whites (1.58 million crimes per year) than they do against other blacks (1.34 million crimes per year)! It's a virtual war of black criminals and white victims!
You'll never read the facts in the national media! Why?

Why Statistics? The University of Northern Iowa believes strongly in allowing the community members to make informed decisions about their personal safety. One element is providing the statistical information about crime. Crime statistics take a variety of forms to tell the story of how crime occurs in a community. UNI has placed statistics based on the Federal Campus Crime Report as the basis of our statistics available to the public. The Federally mandated Campus Crime Report allows students to roughly compare between institutions. Annually, the campus crime statistics and policies are distributed in the "College Life: Issues and Answers" made available to all potential students, faculty and staff by the Office of Associate Vice President for Educational and Student Services, 200 Gilchrist Hall, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50614-0010. General Crime Statistics Resources Campus Security Act The Campus Public Safety policies and statistics are provided in accordance with the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990 ( Clery Act ), required for higher educational institutions receiving Federal Student aid. The University of Northern Iowa publishes and distributes this information yearly, however, we encourage you to call and set up an appointment to speak with our staff. Many times statistics over or understate the actual threats in a community.

One of the most important studies on Crime against people with intellectual disabilities or mental retardation is the Wilson and Brewer Study done in 1992. They asked a sample of 174 adults with intellectual disabilities if they had been victims of crime. They compared the results with a similar survey given to all adults in that same county.
They found the victimization rate for sexual assault to be 10.7 times higher than that of the general public. Robbery was 12.8 times higher.
And overall violent crime was 4.2 times higher. Another Study was done by Sobsey and Doe in 1991 - 162 reports of sexual abuse of people with disabilities found that 80% were assaulted on MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, while 50% experienced 10 OR MORE SEXUAL ASSAULTS. The California Department of Mental Health's Performance Outcome Data from 2000 has uncovered some alarming numbers:
They found that those who were dually diagnosed (mental health disorder and substance abuse) had a rate of violent crime 62 times higher than the general public and for those who were considered the severe and persistent mentally ill, the rate was 18.7 times greater.

These statistics refer to the terms Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 Crimes. Part 1 Crime, the most serious crime, includes criminal homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, auto theft, and arson. Part 2 Crimes encompass all remaining criminal offenses. These include, but are not limited to, sex offenses (excluding rape), financial crime (counterfeiting, fraud, embezzlement, etc.), vandalism, weapons violations, drug abuse violations, and trespassing. The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office uses the term Part 3 Crime to refer to any incident that is not criminal, yet requires law enforcement attention. Some examples include suspicious circumstances, traffic situations, and alarm drops.
During 2000, Part 3 Crimes accounted for the majority of crimes at 54%. Part 2 Crimes accounted for 22%, while Part 1 Crimes accounted for 12% of total crimes. Animal Control calls represented another 12% of calls for service. Dispatchers dispatched an average of 49 calls per day, equalling 20.6 calls an hour. Five-Year Trend Part 1 Crimes
The Federal Bureau of Investigations track Part 1 Crimes. This type of crime continued to decrease from 1999 to 2000. Following the 13% decrease in 1999, 2000 saw a 9% decrease in Part 1 Crime.
