Doctors Hire Image Consultants
RedflagsWeekly, is a website that prides itself on debating and covering health and science issues way beyond what most media do. The site has a very interesting story this week about "image consultants" for doctors. The story says, "Image is the most important factor for success in today’s medical market," according to MDTV Medical News Now Inc. , a New Jersey-based organization that presents a television medical news program that airs on cable in about 20 states. Their purpose is to "educate the public on today’s most popular surgical procedures and highlight the area’s finest surgeons." Redflagsweekly says, "Another company that focuses on boosting medical business is KMR Communications Inc. , whose mission is to represent "those who wish to increase their name recognition in target markets through the use of exposure in the media using the ever increasing vast network of television, radio, newspapers, internet and magazines." Katherine Rothman, CEO of the company writes candidly:

http://www.now.org/issues/violence/stats.html
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
IN THE UNITED STATES
MURDER . Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence, the euphemism for murders and assaults by husbands and boyfriends. That's approximately 1,400 women a year, according to the FBI. The number of women who have been murdered by their intimate partners is greater than the number of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War. BATTERING . Although only 572,000 reports of assault by intimates are officially reported to federal officials each year, the most conservative estimates indicate two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. At least 170,000 of those violent incidents are serious enough to require hospitalization, emergency room care or a doctor's attention. SEXUAL ASSAULT . Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year 1.2 million women are forcibly raped by their current or former male partners, some more than once. THE TARGETS . Women are 10 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate. Young women, women who are separated, divorced or single, low- income women and African-American women are disproportionately victims of assault and rape. Domestic violence rates are five times higher among families below poverty levels, and severe spouse abuse is twice as likely to be committed by unemployed men as by those working full time. Violent attacks on lesbians and gay men have become two to three times more common than they were prior to 1988.

Immigration: costs and benefits
Russil Wvong An article I posted to can.politics in April 1997. On the Canadian newsgroups, where the range of opinions is much wider than in the regular media, there's a number of vocal individuals who think that immigration has huge costs and no benefits. They're not necessarily bad people, racists, or whatever; they just think that immigration is a Bad Thing. I think they're wrong. Immigration has benefits as well as costs; the question is whether the costs outweigh the benefits. Benefits of immigration:
  • Immigrants contribute to the economy in the same way as the rest of us, through work: i.e. by contributing value to some product or service, which can then be sold locally or exported. In this way, they contribute to Canada's GNP, the total size of the economy. Okay, but how do the rest of us benefit? When someone works, they add value to products or services assembling a car, developing software, serving burgers, booking travel, whatever. But the key is that people are not paid as much as the value they add . The surplus is profit for the business. If this surplus didn't exist, the business wouldn't be profitable.

Capital-Journal reporters also talked to local and state officials about various aspects of crime and tell readers what those people had to say about such issues as: the link between drugs and other crimes; the role state sentencing guidelines play in keeping burglars on the street; crime-prevention programs; whether the city has a sufficient number of police officers; and whether the average Topekan is very likely to become a homicide victim. The Sardou Bridge over the Kansas River may create a link between the North Topeka and Oakland communities, but when it comes to crime, residents of the neighborhoods are living on two very different sides of the river.
Although not everyone in Oakland and North Topeka is in agreement, many say they feel safer living and working in Oakland than in North Topeka, where residents say drugs and drug-related crimes have turned some areas into danger zones.
Ed Popkess, owner of Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N. Kansas Ave., said he has had continual problems with minor thefts at his business and said his North Topeka neighborhood is fraught with drug dealers.

At Broken Hill there will be 42 solar dishes. South Australia's facility will have ten. The word "farms" is used because the dishes, in rows mounted on poles, resemble orchards from a distance. Officials in Canberra, the national capital, say the two are intended as prototypes for far larger farms to meet the power needs of isolated communities. The technology was developed by an Australian company, Solar Systems Limited. It involves using solar dishes, more sophisticated than panels commonly in use, which track the sun as it moves through the sky. Each dish magnifies the intensity of the sun by 500 times and focuses the rays onto high-efficiency solar cells. "Solar energy is a renewable source which doesn't produce pollution, carbon dioxide or noise," says federal environmental minister Robert Hill. What's more, it isn't "susceptible to the same price fluctuations as other energy resources." Bioengineered salmon being produced by Aqua Bounty Farms could become the Flavr Savr tomatoes of the animal kingdom. Flavr Savr tomatoes, for those with short memories, were the first bioengineered produce approved for human consumption in the U.S. Now, some time within the next year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to decide whether transgenic Atlantic salmon produced by the American-Canadian firm, a subsidiary of A/F Proteins, can be commercially sold in the United States. If approved, the company's transgenic salmon would become the first genetically altered animal to reach the American food chain. The salmon have received genes from arcticpout, a very cold water fish, which allow them to grow four to six times faster than their natural counterparts.

    NOTES
Some of the data has not been updated recently and thus understates conditions. In certain areas, such as anomalous deaths, we have used an extremely conservative count. It is important in considering these fatal incidents to bear in mind the following: (1) The fact that anomalies need to be investigated further carries no presumption of how a death actually occurred, only that there remain serious questions that require answers. (2) The possibility of foul play must be taken seriously in a major criminal conspiracy in which over two score individuals and firms have been convicted and over 100 witnesses have pled the Fifth Amendment or fled the country. (3) If foul play did occur in any of these cases, that fact by itself does not carry the presumption that the White House was involved. Given the footprints of organized crime, drug trade, foreign espionage, and intelligence agencies on the trail of the Clinton story, such a assumption would not be warranted.
