The Department has developed several initiatives to further this priority. To apply for any of the following Campus Police Crime Prevention Programs, or to bring a program to your dorm, please click here for our online registration form. Blue Light Call Stations
There are emergency two-way call stations at strategic locations throughout campus. You can identify the station by the blue light located above the boxes. When the call button is depressed, an individual can communicate directly with the communications coordinator at the Wellesley College Police Department. The individual can then notify the office of the emergency. The communications coordinator will dispatch an officer or emergency team to effectively respond to the situation. There are severe penalties for tampering with a two-way call station or turning in a false alarm. Campus Escort Program
The Wellesley College Campus Escort Program provides all members of the Wellesley College community and visitors a safe, reliable way to travel about the campus during hours of darkness, if they are travelling alone, or feel particularly unsafe. This program provides community members with either a walking escort or a shuttle van (pre-designated stops) to preclude individuals from walking alone on campus during the hours of darkness. We encourage community members to freely travel about the campus, but also recommend individuals walk with a friend during evening and early morning hours. A shuttle van makes regular stops along a pre-designated route. Walking escorts can be provided when needed.

A primary vehicle for accomplishing this goal is the college's comprehensive crime prevention program. Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch Program is organized to enable the police and the community to work together to make specific geographical areas more crime resistant. It is a citizen involvement, neighborhood and community- based effort, designed to help citizens and the police reduce crime and concerns regarding crime in neighborhoods. One of the most effective ways to promote citizen interaction with police is the sharing of information. Neighborhood groups determine specific needs or problems and then share this information with the police through community meetings, merchant meetings or condo association meetings. The police then act on this information and report back to the group on their progress. An effective Neighborhood Watch requires consistent, independent group participation.
    Electronic Neighborhood Watch
Like the traditional Neighborhood Watch Program, the Electronic Neighborhood Watch Program is an innovative supplement that is aimed at reducing crime in the community at the grass roots level. Safety messages will be sent to participating e-mail recipients. Citizens can be alerted to criminal activity in their neighborhoods. Businesses can be notified of scam artists, thieves, and other criminal activity in the area. By being aware of potential crimes and being willing to look out for another’s interests, the police and citizens can collectively combat crime in our community. Simply go to the Village of Homewood’s web site (homesweethomewood.org) to sign-up for the Electronic Neighborhood Watch.

    What the Minister Said

    Contacts for Reporters

$32-million-a-year Community-based Crime Prevention Program Launched OTTAWA, June 2, 1998 - Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Andy Scott, Solicitor General of Canada, announced today the details of a $32-million-a-year national crime prevention initiative aimed at developing community-based responses to crime, with particular emphasis on children and youth, women and Aboriginal people. "As I stressed three weeks ago, when I announced the government's youth justice renewal strategy, our justice system must do more to prevent the root causes of crime. There is too much emphasis on dealing with crimes already committed and not enough on preventing them in the first place. This program is a key component of the new direction for youth justice renewal," stated Minister McLellan. Said Minister Scott, "Strong partnerships, which include governments, police, community organ-izations, business, families and individuals are the key to crime prevention. Communities must engage all these partners to take action to prevent crime. When people do not act, problems are allowed to grow. The results show up in our prisons and the costs are staggering." This new investment, to be implemented in partnership with the provinces and territories, communities, and the private and non-profit sectors, will help communities deal with the underlying factors that lead children, young people and adults toward criminality. "The key to reducing Canadians' fear of crime and to increasing the confidence of Canadians in their justice system is to encourage community mobilization in the fight against crime. This grassroots-led initiative is all about giving Canadians the tools they need to prevent crime in their neighbourhoods," added Minister McLellan.
