The crime prevention program plays an important and significant role within the Bates College Community. The Crime Prevention Office works with the belief that they are a component of the educational process for students, faculty and staff within the community. Relying on a teamwork approach, the responsibility in the reduction of crime lies with Security and Campus Safety, the individual, and the campus community. Programs available to the Bates Community Bicycle Registration Program
Members of the community are encouraged to register their bicycles at no cost. The individual is provided with a numbered sticker which is placed on the bicycle. The serial number and other pertinent data is recorded on a registration form. A copy of the form is provided to the owner, Security and Campus Safety, and the Lewiston Police Department. Property Identification Program (PIP)
This program allows community members to check out scribers, engrave their property with their social security number or other identifier, and keep a list and description of these items in a safe place. The original form is retained by the owner and a copy is kept on file at Security and Campus Safety. Security Fest

Crime Prevention Programs and Services As a member of Winona State University community, you play a vital role in protecting lives, property and personal safety by acting responsibly. Personal safety is best accomplished as a team effort undertaken by university officials, the community and you. Everyone can help promote personal safety by avoiding potentially unsafe situations whenever possible and by reporting crime promptly. Prevention is the best aid to your own personal safety. For example, walk in well-lit areas or use academic buildings during high traffic times. We encourage you to become aware of potential safety hazards at all times. Reporting suspicious incidents can affect personal safety by helping to keep the campus safer. Even if you are not sure what you see is really a crime, call Campus Security (457-5555) or the Winona Police Department (454-6100) and let them decide. You may also want to report suspicious incidents to your Hall Director, Resident Assistant, or other university official. Crime Prevention Programs
  • A.C.T. (Abolish Chronic Truancy) places prosecutors in the schools to work with administrators, teachers, parents and students to intervene at the very beginning of the truancy cycle. The A.C.T. program started in 1991 in one school in South Central Los Angeles. In 1993, the program became fully implemented with the assignment of three attorneys to the program on a full time basis. There are currently 343 schools in 36 school districts involved with the A.C.T. program in Los Angeles County. The Bad Check Program tracks down bad check writers, returns the money to the victims, and deters future offenses through a diversion program and possible criminal prosecution. Aside from benefiting merchants and consumers, this program is designed to remove some of the load from overburdened local police. Courageous Citizens Awards Program Domestic Violence Hotline ) - In November of 1994, the District Attorney established the Los Angeles County Domestic Violence Hotline to help victims find a safe way out of their abusive environments. Callers to the hotline are routed directly to trained shelter personnel with a choice of six languages. Environmental Scholarship Programs - As the result of the prosecution and settlement of a major environmental crime case, a college scholarship fund was established at five high schools in the area affected by the crime. Graduating seniors attending Bell Gardens, El Rancho, Montebello, Pioneer, and Schurr High Schools are eligible for the scholarships, which are annually awarded to students who have demonstrated a serious interest or commitment to environmental issues during the course of their high school education. This interest can be demonstrated through achievements in science, social sciences, or community activities involving air pollution, waste disposal, recycling or environmental education. Scholarship funds have also been established at the Environmental Physical Sciences Magnet Center at Reseda High School and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps.

C.O.P.S.
(Community Oriented Police Service)
Community Policing at the Western Connecticut State University Police Division is the full service of personalized policing, where the same officer patrols and works in the same area on a permanent basis, working in a proactive partnership with the University students and staff to identify and solve problems. Community Policing relies on foot and bike patrol and encourages the community to interact with the officers. Some of the strategies that the department has in place to enhance the community policing initiatives are:
  • A crime prevention officer that speaks with students and hands out information on issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, theft and safety tips. High visibility of officers and student patrol personnel. Security survey services for buildings, facilities or departments. Community participation in identifying problems on campus.
The University Police Division has a C.O.P.S. officer who is available on day shifts (7am-3pm). The C.O.P.S. officer is responsible for the coordination of all community oriented police activities, serves as a liaison officer with university residence life offices and student groups on campus. The C.O.P.S. officer conducts many program's in conjunction with the Crime Prevention officer.

Apartment Watch Another modification of the successful Neighborhood Watch program, this program was designed to meet the needs of apartment communities which tend to be more transitory than are communities made up of single family residences. The goal is to organize a phone chain of building captains, one from each building, and to educate them on auto and residential security and the effective reporting of suspicious incidents. Business Watch The Business Watch program is patterned after the highly successful Neighborhood Watch program. As with Neighborhood Watch, its purpose is to increase communication and awareness of crime in the business community. Worship Watch The Worship Watch program is designed the same as Neighborhood Watch to bring law enforcement services to the religious community. Our goal is to reach the members of each congregation by offering programs relating to crime prevention and law enforcement awareness. We also, want to help you provide your congregation with a safe and secure place to meet and worship. Neighborhood Watch The Neighborhood Watch program is a national, voluntary, self-help crime prevention effort centered around the community and local law enforcement working together for the safety and protection of a neighborhood. This two hour program includes instruction on organizing a Neighborhood Watch group and telephone communication chain, how to report suspicious incidents to law enforcement, and residential security.

Crime Prevention Programs The best way to keep crime out of our neighbourhoods is to keep ourselves involved in crime prevention. Get to know your business neighbours and discuss an effective crime prevention strategy for your area. If you witness a crime, phone the police. Remain on the line until a police vehicle arrives so you can direct the officers to the exact location and individuals involved in the offence. Don't assume that someone else has called the police... three calls received are better than no calls at all. Join a crime prevention organization such as the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association (ACCPA) , Neighbourhood Watch, Block Watch, Rural Crime Watch, Citizens on Patrol or the Heads Up Fraud Prevention Association. Contact the crime prevention coordinator in your local police service for more information on business security and crime prevention in your area. Crime Prevention programs in Medicine Hat
