What is Neighborhood Watch?
Police Departments across the country are learning that community participation in anti-crime programs is essential. One of the most effective ways to promote citizen interaction with police is the sharing of information. Citizen groups determine specific needs or problems and then share this information with local police. The police then act on this information and report back to the group on their progress. This program also works when the police go to public groups and organizations and make them aware of specific criminal activities or the needs of the police department. The Neighborhood Watch concept is designed to target specific geographical areas and to assist citizens in these areas to;

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Neighborhood Watch makes a difference!
    What is Neighborhood Watch?
Neighborhood Watch is a group of neighbors looking out for neighbors. It is getting to know each other and becoming familiar with your neighbors' habits and vehicles so that you will know when something is suspicious or out of the ordinary. In addition to recognizing potential suspicious activities, Neighborhood Watch participants report such activity by calling 911. After calling 911, also notify your Neighborhood Watch Chairperson or neighborhood voice mail. All of this doesn't make you a nosy neighbor - it makes you a good neighbor in the old-fashioned sense of the word. Many people don't want to bother the police because they are afraid that it may not be a real emergency or that they may be embarrassed if their suspicions turn out to be unfounded. The police would much rather be called out to investigate than to be called after a crime has been committed. When in doubt, always call 911.

What is Neighborhood Watch? The City of West Sacramento's Neighborhood Watch program is the most effective means available for keeping crime out of our neighborhoods. It relies on the best crime fighting tool ever invented - a good neighbor. Fortunately, good neighbors are found everywhere. We believe that when neighbors work together with law enforcement, one of the best crime fighting teams is created. We provide citizens with guidelines on how to work with law enforcement to start and sustain an effective Neighborhood Watch program. We also provide information on special activities and how to report crimes. Neighborhood Watch is the basis for an ongoing dialogue and cooperative relationship with neighbors, law enforcement and other city and county agencies. Interested members of the community regularly contact the Crime Prevention Unit of the police department for assistance in starting a program in their neighborhood. Upon contact, the Crime Prevention Officer will explain that neighborhood watch involves:
    • Neighbors getting to know each other, and working together in a program of mutual assistance.

Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in their communities. The program involves the joint efforts of the sheriff's department and the community and designed to enhance neighborhood security, heighten the community's power of observation, and to encourage mutual assistance and concern among neighbors. It involves:
    • Neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance.
    • Residents trained to recognize and report suspicitous actives in their neighborhoods
    • Implementation of crime prevention techniques such as home security.

    THE NEED FOR THE PROGRAM
In recent years, neighborhoods have experienced rapid change. The old, well-established neighborhood has been replaced by a highly transient, growing community where people seek more and more privacy. This life-style tends to promote unfamiliarity with neighbors and a corresponding lack of concern. Unfortunately, this enhances the opportunity for the criminal element and increases the community's vulnerability to crime.

Neighborhood Watch A Neighborhood Watch can be formed around any geographical unit: a block, apartment, public housing complex, business area, office, or marina. A watch group serves as an extra set of eyes and ears for reporting crime and helping neighbors. How effective a Neighborhood Watch is depends on how active its members are. Neighborhood Watch serves as a springboard for efforts that address community concerns such as recreation for youth, child care, and affordable housing. How do I get started? First, before you contact your local law enforcement agency, contact your neighbors. Send out a flyer, call, or visit your neighbors to get an idea as to what the main concerns in the neighborhood are in regard to crime and personal safety. Then contact your local law enforcement agency and check about setting up your first Neighborhood Watch meeting. In order for a group to be certified as a neighborhood watch, most agencies require a minimum of two initial meetings. After your two initial meetings, it is up to your neighborhood to elect a captain for your Neighborhood Watch. After you have established the core group of members and the area your watch will cover, you will receive your signs that will announce to would be criminals that your neighborhood is "on the watch." If you live in Whitfield County, Georgia, and would like to start a Neighborhood Watch, contact Lt. Wayne Mathis at the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 272-3273 or fill out a

Home Community Community crime prevention addresses real problems while it revives civic energy and community spirit. It is most effective when it mobilizes the skills and resources of committed residents and organizations. Neighborhood Watch joins communities and law enforcement in a coordinated effort to suppress crime and exchange information. An effective Watch Group is organized by concerned citizens who involve their neighbors in an effort to improve their personal and property safety. Neighborhood Watch works because most criminals do not like to work in areas where they may be detected. A criminal's chance of being detected increases when neighbors are alert and watchful for suspicious activity. The Neighborhood Watch Program can improve neighborhood safety in the following ways:
  • Crime prevention personnel offer free home security inspections to all residents. Watch Group members are encouraged to mark their property with their California Drivers License Number. This practice will improve the chance of recovery if your property should be stolen. Crime Prevention Personnel are available to speak to your Watch Groups on a variety of topics, including personal safety, fraud, auto theft, etc.

    About Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that teaches citizens techniques to reduce the risk of being a victim at home or in public by training citizens on the importance of recognizing suspicious activities and how to report them. Residents learn how to make their homes more secure and properly identify their property. Neighborhood Watch allows neighbors to get to know each other and their routines so that any out of place activity can be reported and investigated. Implementation of a Neighborhood Watch on your block could result in substantial reductions of crimes. Neighborhood Watch works because people want to assume a more active role in making their communities safe. Residents within a neighborhood know who belongs there and who doesn't and what activity is suspicious. Citizens will work with, instead of relying on, law enforcement to combat crime in their community. The Neighborhood Watch Program consists of a series of activities designed to improve the safety of the City through the participation of its residents. The activities include Neighborhood Watch Meetings, Business Watch and the Community Awareness Program.

    How does neighborhood watch work?
You and your neighbors are the ones who are in a position to really know what goes on in your neighborhood. Ask yourself: Would a police officer recognize a stranger in your yard or a suspicious vehicle in your driveway? Maybe not. But your neighbors probably would!. And that's what Neighborhood Watch is all about. Organizing the eyes and ears of an entire neighborhood into a powerful, hard to penetrate, 24 hour-a-day barrier... protecting neighborhoods from crime.

Police and Citizens’ Stopping Crime Together
Neighborhood Crime Watch is one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear. It bonds area residents to help reduce crime and improves relations between police and the communities they serve. In 1981, the St. Petersburg Police Department began the Neighborhood Crime Watch program. Since that time, we have been working hard to reduce crime, but we need the help of every citizen in this effort. Citizens like yourself need to involve themselves in the fight against crime by working with the police and other residents. Why Neighborhood Crime Watch? Neighborhood Crime Watch encourages citizen participation in reducing crime. Residents and police work together to achieve one common goal – "Making Their Neighborhoods Safe." Residents are taught how to protect their property and report suspicious activities to the police.
