The Borough of Macclesfield Crime Prevention Panel is a body of volunteers who adopt crime prevention tactics in order to reduce, and help detect, crime committed against the local population. In addition to local business people and residents, the Panel consists of representatives form Macclesfield Borough Council, Macclesfield Hospital, Cheshire County Council, Parish Councillors, the Crime Manager of Macclesfield Division, the Probation Service and the National Farmers Union. And example of the work undertaken by the Panel is a mobile caravan, staffed by Panel members, which is used at events such as the Royal Horticultural Show where, over a three day period, over 3.000 people receive crime prevention advice and literature. HomeWatch Part of the Panel's aim is to support HomeWatch sometimes called Neighbourhood Watch , which originated in the County of Cheshire. In the Borough of Macclesfield, which covers the towns of Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Knutsford and Poynton, there are some 1,200 registered schemes with an average of 17 householders per scheme. We need neighbourhood and home watch schemes for the UK to make safe and secure local communities. Local home watch schemes, in particular, are essential for fighting local crime, improving home security and increasing the well being of UK citizens.

National Neighborhood Watch Program
Join NSA in working toward doubling the number of Neighborhood Watch groups in the nation by January 2004. Record your efforts online at USAonwatch.org in the Meet the Challenge area. Thank you for your commitment to Neighborhood Watch and crime prevention! Neighborhood Watch is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most well known crime prevention concepts in history. While the modern day concept of Neighborhood Watch came into prominence in the late 1960s in response to an increasing burglary rate, its roots in America can actually be traced all the way back to the days of Colonial settlements when night watchmen patrolled the streets. The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) took this crime prevention concept a step further by making it a national initiative the National Neighborhood Watch Program . The program was developed in response to a multitude of requests from Sheriffs and Police Chiefs around the country. Law enforcement leaders were looking for a crime prevention program which would incorporate citizen involvement, and which would address the increasing number of burglaries taking place, especially in rural and suburban residential areas. Neighborhood Watch Neighborhood Watch was created to obtain citizen involvement in discouraging and preventing residential crime. The program uses citizen involvement to secure their own homes and personal property and to report any suspicious activity to the police. Since its creation in 1972, it has brought a dramatic drop in the local residential crime rate. Neighborhood Crime Facts * Burglary, auto theft, rape, child molestation and arson are the most prevalent neighborhood crimes. * Household burglary is one of the easiest crimes to commit and prevent, but one of the hardest to solve. * A great deal of time is spent on investigating burglaries. * Household burglary is one of the most rapidly increasing major crimes in the nation. * Most home burglars are young amateurs looking for easy targets. * Statistics show that in over one-half of household burglaries, there was not any force involved.

In Fiscal Year 2002 and 2003 the Massachusetts Legislature eliminated funding for the Massachusetts Neighborhood Crime Watch Commission (MNCWC) located within the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). The MNCWC has been a major crime prevention resource and has established over 2,300 crime watch groups statewide. Currently, the Commission is the only statewide neighborhood watch resource in the United States and serves as an invaluable tool for Massachusetts’ residents and its 351 police departments. Neighborhood Watch, Inc. supports the efforts of the Massachusetts Neighborhood Crime Watch Commission as well as other groups and police departments on the local level. This grass-roots anti-terrorism effort provides the citizens of Massachusetts and all Americans a chance to make their community a safer place to live. Neighborhood Watch Burglary is a crime of opportunity, committed by criminals who capitalize on carelessness or neglect. Most home burglaries are not committed by professionals who have planned to commit a burglary. Most are committed by amateurs, who find an open or unlocked door or window, or drug abusers that take advantage of a home's weak defenses. To combat the increase in crime in today's society, the police need the eyes and ears of citizens like you. To help the police protect your property from criminals you must get involved. To help you help yourself, your community, and the Simi Valley Police Department the Neighborhood Watch Program was established.

Don't be fooled into thinking that you don't need a neighborhood watch in your area just because you don't see any criminal activity. Chances are crime has already happened, but you just aren't aware of it. Have you taken the time to get to know your neighbors four to five houses away from you? Have they recently been a victim of a crime? Could you have helped spot unusual activity and then notified the police? With Neighborhood Watch, a little effort goes a long way. Just by getting to know each other can help you identify abnormal activity at your neighbor's home. Remember, your neighbor is part of your community and what happens to them could happen to you.
