    GENERAL CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
Crime does not simply happen. Like a triangle, crime must have three sides or elements present to be complete. Those three elements are; ABILITY DESIRE and OPPORTUNITY . Remove any one of these elements and the triangle can't be formed and the crime will not occur. You can help the University Police reduce crime on the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus by reducing the "opportunity" for crime. By limiting the opportunity for crime, you remove one side of the crime triangle and limit the ability for the criminal to commit the crime. Keep these crime prevention tips in mind and you will greatly reduce criminal incidents at home and here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison: Call the police immediately if you see or hear something suspicious. Report any crime or suspicion of a crime at once. Dial 911 in an emergency or when a crime is in progress. Be wary of people that don't appear to belong in the area. If you doubt that they belong in the area, ask them questions. If their answers are vague or suspicious, call the police. Keep your possessions in sight at all times. Don't leave books or backpacks unattended anywhere, it only takes a matter of seconds for things to disappear.

Enforcement Why The Senior Crime Prevention University is Needed With 15 percent of its citizens over the age of 65, Pennsylvania has the second highest percentage of seniors in the nation, and that number is continually rising. The Senior Crime Prevention University (SCPU) educates older Pennsylvanians and their families throughout the Commonwealth on crime prevention. Our goal is to make Pennsylvania's older population aware of the threat of fraud to the elder community, teach them how to avoid being victimized; and to make sure they know who they should call when they are concerned about their safety and well being. Educating seniors about crime and how to avoid it is the best way we can help seniors to help themselves.

Welcome to The Crime Prevention Group (TCPG) Home Page
This site has three functions, providing
  • (1) background information on smoking and laws,
  • (2) links to more detailed information, and
  • (3) letter writing samples for you to take action to promote safe cigarettes by contacting government officials with authority to accomplish that goal.
TCPG presents this issue from multiple approaches, to enlist as broad a based community support for safe cigarettes as possible. Rather than the limited "health only" aspect others focus on, TCPG recognizes that people have wider interests, hence, identifies multiple examples of the ill effects of unsafe cigarettes, and places the subject in more comprehensive context than other sites.
The issue of safe cigarettes is both a smokers' and nonsmokers' rights issue. Others give the impression that the rights clash, but TCPG looks to the common ground: Everybody is entitled to safe products. Tobacco companies are the only ones regularly violating this consumer protection principle, by their discriminating against smokers, the only people denied normal consumer product protection against products laden with toxic chemicals that kill when used as the manufacturers intend. Nonsmokers would not object to safe cigarettes that do not emit hazardous emissions.

    • General Crime Prevention Tips Auto Theft Prevention Vacation Precautions Many burglars will spend no more than 60 seconds attempting to break into a home. Make sure every external door has sturdy, wall-installed dead bolt locks. Sliding glass doors offer easy access if not properly secured. You can secure them by installing commercially available locks or putting a broomstick or wooden dowel in the inside track to jam the door. Never hide house keys under the door mat or a rock that is near your door. Most burglars know that trick. Instead give an extra key to a trusted neighbor. When you move to a new house or apartment, have a competent locksmith rekey the locks. All outside door to your home should be metal or solid wood. Install a peephole in all entry doors so you can see who is outside without opening the door. Don't use door chains; they break easily and do not keep intruders out.
