History
The island of Crete has been inhabited since prehistoric times. There is evidence of organized habitation which dates back to 8000 BCE, and the excavations of the 20th century have revealed a splendid civilization which ruled the island and much of the Aegean during the Bronze Age. The Minoan civilization, as it was named, is credited as the first civilization of Europe, it began around 2000 BCE and it lasted for about two millennia before it was replaced on the island by Mycenaean civilization circa 1375, and then by Classical and Hellenistic Greeks, which in turn were replaced by the Romans. The Byzantine empire and the Venetians controlled the island for a few hundred years before the Ottoman empire invaded the island. The Ottoman empire ruled the island from 1645 until 1898 when the Greeks revolted and finally re-united the island with Greece in 1913.

The rich history of Crete has left the island strewn with hundreds of archaeological sites, large and small. The island reached its zenith during prehistoric times when the Minoan civilization dominated the Aegean and produced a fascinating culture which in turn has left behind a plethora of beautiful art and architecture. Once the Minoan culture fell into decline, the Mycenaean powers of mainland Greece controlled the island, and later the Greeks during the Classical and Hellenistic eras. In turn, the Romans established their authority and ruled Crete

Bayraktaroglu: Next generation in Crete to keep culture alive
Dr. Abidin Bayraktaroglu, Turkish-Cretan Culture and Friendship Association Chairman, stated that the two nations could ensure Turkish-Greek friendship themselves and that the politicians will just have to watch them. Bayraktaroglu said their association would try hard to achieve this, Anatolia news agency reported Bayraktaroglu noted that in the years betweeen 1924 and 1925, following the Treaty of Lausanne, nearly 500,000 people (100,000 being from Crete) came to Anatolia from Greece under the exchange program. Pointing out that they were able to establish an association in 1999, he said, "So many years have past since Lausanne and we are starting to forget our culture and are trying hard to keep it alive." Those who immigrated from Anatolia to Greece under the exchange program never fogot their own culture, stated Bayraktaroglu and added that the people of Crete were neither Byzantine Greeks nor Greeks, they had a different race, culture and language and that this had to be transferred to the young generation. Bayraktaroglu emphasized that the local people of Crete came from Venice, Malta, Libya, Anatolia and Greece.

Culture of Crete
We, Cretans, are permanently in love with our island and what it stands for. We are in love with its spirit which evolved from vivacious Minoan times through perpetual and eventful contacts with different races and civilizations, the Dorians, the Egyptians, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Venetians, the Turks... This very special spirit transcends the limits of culture; we have learnt to distinguish it in all aspects of our life. It runs through the "rizitika" folk songs; it resides in plant motifs of ancient earthenware; it characterizes the way a shepherd drives its flock of sheep to the slopes of the Sfakian mountains; it is diffused in the aroma of "diktamos" herb and adds fire to the eyes of a solitary priest saying mass at a small country church, a handgun passed in it's belt...
FAMOUS CRETANS
NIKOLAOS KAZANTZAKIS One of the most significant Greek novelists, poets, drama writers and scholars. He was born in Heraklio, in 1833 and studied Law in Athens and Philosophy in Paris. He was influenced by the theories of Ion Dragoumis and Eleftherios Venizelos. His trip to Russia in 1919, acting as General Manager of the Ministry of Welfare, was the introduction of his exciting odyssey: Vienna, Berlin, Italy, Crete, Russia, Cyprus, Spain, Egypt, mount Sinah, Goethesgub (Tsechoslovakia), Nice (France). He died in Germany, in 1957. His first novel was "The Snake and the Lilly", in 1906, followed by "Foreman", "Ascetic Life", the translation of Dante's "Divina Comedy". His prime was evident by the works "Life of Alexis Zorbas", "Christ is crossed again", "Captain Michael", "The Last Temptation", "God's Poor Man" and "Reference to Greco".

Historical Museum of Crete
T he Museum is housed in a neoclassical building which belongs to the Philanthropic Institutions A. and M. Kalokairinou. It was designed by L. Kantantzoglou and built in 1870, in the place of an older mansion. It was fired by the Turks during the events of August 25, 1898 and was reconstructed in 1903 on the plans of K.Tsantirakis (preserved today), based on the layout of the previous structure.
I t has been declared a Historical Building and a Work of Art and is protected by a preservation order. The two-storeyed building is a wonderful specimen of the Neoclassical architecture. Its entrance is formed by a marble porch and columns made of poros stone. The windows on the facade of the ground floor and in the south part of the east and west walls are crowned by arched lintels and framed by caryatids (Hermae) supporting a pediment. The rest of the windows have plain, rectangular frames. The north side of the building is modelled as a "scarpa" following the Venetian model. The courtyard on the south side of the building is enclosed by a Neoclassical fence. The interior is decorated with friezes depicting scenes from the Iliad and the Odyssey.
I ts presents form (19 rooms, 2 court yards, library etc.) is a combination of neoclassical and modern architecture. The works of expansion began in 1989 and were completed in 1997.
